    If there's one person whose championship win NASCAR took exception to, it was Matt Kenseth. By winning the 2003 Winston Cup with a race to spare despite only winning one race, it led to Brian France and others implementing The Chase to prevent a similar performance happening again. The initial Chase was dubbed the Matt Kenseth rule as a result.
    I know Jarret has voiced similar views to that which I'm going to say, but it doesn't matter the way he won the Winston Cup in 2003. He was simply the most consistent driver over the course of the season. Yes, Ryan Newman was more spectacular to watch with all the wins he had, but there's a reason why he was so far adrift of Kenseth in the final standings for 2003, all the times he had DNF's.
    Matt Kenseth deserved the 2003 title and if NASCAR is to repair the damage of Brian France, they need to reinstate the year long points system, make every single race matter towards the championship

    • @runrafarunthebestintheworld
      @runrafarunthebestintheworld ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes and they need to make wins matter more while still having a year long points system while still having consistency matter.

    • @SiVlog1989
      @SiVlog1989 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@runrafarunthebestintheworld well, it's a balancing act. The points difference between first and second needs to be big enough to have an impact to make wins matter, but not so much that it allows the winningest driver cause people to get bored with the same person winning.
      In an ideal world, we'd look towards 1992, the absolutely insane points battle that left 6 drivers mathematically in contention, of which 3 were realistic. But the very thing that made it so special, how close it was, with Bill Elliott and Alan Kulwicki going flat out to get every last bonus point they could in the Hooters 500, would take very specific circumstances to repeat. Specifically, it would involve inconsistent finishes from those who won the most races and the flip side being a driver who is consistent but lacks wins compared to the others. It's not something that's going to happen in most circumstances, but because of that, that's what makes it worth watching

    • @jacekatalakis8316
      @jacekatalakis8316 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really, it's been stated many places that they were looking at a Chase format as far back as 2000 and tweaking the points due to runaway champions, Kenseth was just the last straw. Kenseth's said in interviews Brian France was adamant on making things matter more, can't remebrer if it's wins or points, as Kenseth points out, now we talk about points every week of the playoffs and it's worse than it was under the Latford system

    • @SiVlog1989
      @SiVlog1989 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @jacekatalakis8316 I guess the flip side of it would be, for example, showing a modern day audience Jeff Gordon's 1998 season, where together with Mark Martin, they won 20 of the 33 races that year, nearly 2/3 of the races run. Jeff's average finish of 5.7 with 13 wins by himself (7 for Mark) would be considered pretty boring by today's standards as you had pretty much coin toss odds of who was going to win. There needs to be a balance in my view, regard consistency and give a benefit for wins, but not have the same person winning all the time

    • @jacekatalakis8316
      @jacekatalakis8316 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing with 98 is you had good racing though even if Jeff and Mark won. It's like in F1 this year, Max is winning, but, the racing through the field is great. In 98 you had, arguably, better racing for 40th to 43rd than you do now, because you had less developed cars and, arguably, harder to drive. The telecasts also did a great job, IMO, of shining a light on the great racing that was going on throughout the field. Yes, Jeff and Mark dominated, but go back to a race in 98 and pay attention to the racing throughout the field and how the network shows what's going on, vs what we have now with Fox and NBC

      It was sometime around his 3rd or 4th championship that I was just sick of hearing the whining that they were picking Johnson's best tracks in those final 10 races (but they definitely weren't). I tend to be a numbers guy, so I went through all the statistics. I picked out all the Chase drivers for the years and put together each individual driver's best 10 tracks to create a dream Chase for that driver. I then compared JJ's average finish at THAT driver's dream Chase schedule and found only 2 drivers that JJ wouldn't have beaten (and they only barely beat him). I remember one was Gordon, and I think the other was Hamlin or Harvick. They were definitely changing the formats to increase the chances for anyone else to win.

    A couple things: the reason DW was upset at north Wilkesboro was because while nascar was trying to sort the mess out under caution, the bodine team pitted for fresh tires. Then nascar put them at the front. With newer tires, bodine pulled away, when if he’d restarted with his old tires, he’d likely have been passed. Second, just my opinion, I’m not so sure that nascar didn’t penalize Junior at Dega because they favorited him so much as they were afraid of the track being burned down if they did it. Who knows? As an F1 fan in addition to NASCAR this video has me thinking about 3 times (out of many) that F1 played favorites. The first one happened in 1989 when FIA president Jean-Marie Balestre personally DQ'd Senna from the Japanese GP because he used the escape road to get back on track after his incident with teammate & title rival Prost. This cost Senna the World title. Then in 1994 (again involving the World title fight) the stewards absolutely refused to penalize Michael Schumacher after he intentionally rammed Damon Hill at the Australian GP which resulted in Hill DNF'ing & Schumacher winning his first World title. Lastly there's the period from 2000-2004 where F1 & the FIA was accused heavily favoring Ferrari (especially when it came to the technical regulations & things like team orders) so that Michael Schumacher could win the majority of his 7 World titles. Heck the FIA even took away wins from Schumacher's teammate Rubens Barrichello twice during the 2002 season (Austria & Indy) because they wanted Schumacher to win & set the record for most wins in a season at the time. This favoritism continues to plague F1 as they have been accused of this with the Red Bull dynasty with Vettel from 2010-2013, Mercedes with Hamilton/Rosberg from 2014-2020 & Red Bull again with Max Verstappen recently.

    • @dominicbarden4436

      Austria 2002 was purely Ferrari team orders, nothing to do with the FIA (besides, I think Ferrari were fined for not having their drivers on the right spots on the podium), and at Indianapolis Barrichello kept the win (Schumacher said he tried and failed to stage a dead heat). The main 'Ferrari International Assistance' controversy I can think of during that time was when Michelin were told to change their tyre construction with three races left in the 2003 season, which might have impacted McLaren and Williams, who were challenging Ferrari for the title.

    • @crystaljon

      You say that stuff about Ferrari, and yet, many claim that the 2005 tire change ban was an "anti-Ferrari" rule, since they noticed that Ferrari's early-2000s domination was starting to negatively affect ratings, and needed to do something about it. Which I guess to their credit, kind of worked, since Ferrari would only score one win in '05 (that race we all want to forget.)

    Granted, I am a biased Jeff Gordon fan here, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. However, I still stand by the idea of adding Jeff to the 2013 Chase, but ONLY, because of certain circumstances within that race. A lot of detractors tend to forget that, prior to the Spingate caution, Jeff was currently in position to make the chase on points (+2 over Logano, trapped a lap down). Then Bowyer spins, Logano and the Fords as well as MWR plays some tricks under caution, Jeff loses a couple spots on the restart, and results in Jeff and Newman missing the chase. While granted, anything could happen in the remaining 8 laps (a legitimate caution, Jeff loses spots, etc.), all signs seemed to indicate that the race was going to finish under green as is and Jeff (barring an issue) was going to make the chase alongside Newman (at the expense of Truex and Logano). -- I do think the addition of 13th car was a bit odd; they could have penalized Logano or Bowyer for their actions and removed one or the other to replace with Jeff instead of just sticking him in the chase. Nevertheless, it has always been my opinion that Jeff was going to make the 2013 Chase had Spingate not occurred; adding him back in should not be a controversy.
    If it is any consolation to those that think my fan bias clouds my judgement, please note that I have always felt that Jeff should have been parked for Homestead 2012, and Byron (my current favorite) should have kept the penalty from earlier this year and from last year's altercation with Hamlin (though, I am happy none of these penalties occurred). Also, had Jeff not been in position to make the Chase prior to Spingate, I would have a different opinion on the matter.

    Erik Jones should've won the Talladega fall race bc:
    1. DiBenedetto did force Byron below the yellow was rightfully penalized
    2. Hamlin clearly went below the yellow line and came from 4-7 to the lead and didn't get penalized

So many of those are just good stories at the end of the day, and the tolerances are so tight that a little extra breathing room can absolutely make a car do more.

      That one was more from the National Motorsports Appeal Panel than Nascar. I think that the more recent theories that Nascar favors Bubba Wallace like they did with Gordon, Davey, and Junior do have some merit, although it's not due to some grand conspiracy like the Facebook boomers believe- it really comes down to the fact that he brings a ton of big sponsors in and Nascar wants to keep them, so they're more lenient with him. Being the only Toyota driver that hasn't been caught cheating this year despite getting around the same results is definitely suspicious.

    Ay, if you go to the Talladega race with Logano and Junior, the real conspiracy is that Harvick did not maintain speed through the caution and was somehow allowed to keep his position on that second and final restart. This allowed Harvick to advance when he should have had his season end. If you go back to when Marcos Ambrose did not maintain his speed under caution at one of the road courses while saving gas, Ambrose was forced to restart behind the cars that had passed him under caution. Harvick was passed by the entire field but still got to restart where he would've been had he not had a problem. Nascar, knowing Harvick was going to intentionally cause a wreck, allowed him to do it anyway so he would advance to the next round.

    One thing forgotten about the 2016 Talladega race that still drives me nuts to this day was that Dale Jr. was about to be lapped, and the caution came out with 7 laps to go when Jamie McMurray blew his engine. Under the caution leading to the GWC finish, Greg Biffle was leading (it would unexpectedly be his final season in cup, too).
    Most of the field pitted, but Biffle was in fuel-save and around the time they were ready to restart for the GWC, they ran another 5 or 6 caution laps. Dale Jr. was in 3rd initially. Finally, Biffle was running out, and the second he pulled into the pits, NASCAR announced they were going Green next time by. Dale Jr. took Biffles spot and proceeded to choke twice. Some things are setup too well to be coincidences, and that was one of those times. It was CLEARLY rigged.
    NASCAR has always simped for Jr; why else would he have his own graphic (Dale Jr Nationwide Rewind, I think it was called) while having a, not bad at all, but still underwhelming career?

    • @nathanstroud2223
      @nathanstroud2223 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The answer to your question about why Dale Jr. had his own graphic is right there in the name if it was indeed a sponsored segment by Nationwide. It's not that different from the "Toyota Driver Update" we still see today on the broadcasts. And you know what? Dale Jr. being the most popular driver at the time probably sweetened the deal for NASCAR's broadcasting partners when Nationwide Insurance approached them with the idea.
