    Been waiting for this review, and I honestly expected it to sound like this! I am waiting for my new Evo 16 at the beginning of July. I am very confident about my order, even now more than ever after listening to this video. There are many giving this specific sound card thumbs up and it makes me feel very confident I bought the right one.

    Great review and track Alec. Really quite mind blowing what Audient have managed here for 400 quid and I really love that you tested it with high end mics just as you have other gear - it shows something really quite eye opening. I listened back and forth to this demo song and the one from your excellent Neve OPX video and if we are honest about it there is really quite negligible sonic difference. That’s quite mind blowing tbh and shows the importance of great mics and a great performance to be paramount over anything else. Amazing stuff one again man 👌

    Do you find the Evo16 to have low noise? I've been using two Motu 8Pre's for the past years, but I'm thinking of upgrading - partly because they won't update their drivers for the 8Pre's and they have quite a bit of noise in the preamps.
    Maybe not comparable to the UA Apollo's, but what's your opinion on Evo's low noise? :)
    Cheers!

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say the noise did not get in the way of what I was recording, it’s of course not as clean as some of the higher end interfaces I have tested, however if you like what you are hearing in the review, then it may be close to what you are looking for :)

  • @chrislink73
    @chrislink73 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That jz vintage 67 sounded great in the mix, especially on vocals. How does it stack up the the real deal? The look of the mic design reminds me a lot of the Austrian Audio OC818. The EVO 16 seems like a remarkable value option, especially for someone just starting out -- you're going to get a great result, and most mix engineers can use different preamps in the box to add different flavors to taste. Cheers, thanks for the review!

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really enjoying the JZ so far, I’ve been putting it through its paces over the last couple weeks. In my review video I’ll be sure to get a couple comparisons to the 67 re-issue and see the differences. I’m a big fan of the EVO, it’s a great value proposition with the ability to have a full blown setup at a really low price.

  • @damionwolfe4712
    @damionwolfe4712 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another good one Alec. I'm curious to know your take on the headroom of each pre? I'm considering the SP8 but worried that it may not be enough for dynamic mics like the SM7. Thanks.

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Damion, Depends on what you are recording really, if it’s delicate sources you might find the gain a little limiting, but in my tests I was pretty happy with how the pre’s performed. If you check out the the EVO 4 review I used a very different set of mics with the same ore’s. :)

  • @Windkin1983
    @Windkin1983 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would like you to do a comparison where you record the same song through the EVO 16 and also through a high end pre. Then let us hear the difference in a final mix. Would be interesting to hear how big/small difference there is between this and something much more expensive.

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  ปีที่แล้ว

      Think that is possible to do, it would likely take a really long time. There are other factors, like conversion to take into account.
      I think what I have learnt through doing these reviews is that great gear does always help, but it does not come near good performance and arrangement. That always wins. I’ve recorded with so many artists who come in with a garage band track recorded in their kitchen that has more vibe and performance than what we try to re-create here with all of the great equipment. (That was very humbling moment when I realised an SM57 into a Focusrite interface was a better fit than my U67/1073/1176/LA2A chain.)
      Shootouts are fun, but arrangement and practise are likely bigger things to focus on from my side. :)
      Hope that makes sense!

    • @Windkin1983
      @Windkin1983 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alecbrits It makes total sense, and I can see that this probably takes more time than it may be worth. I have seen a lot of comparison type video, but noe one really doing this where they show differences in a final mix, only soloed instruments. Differences are often smaller and more subtle than one might think. Makes me wonder if you can even tell in a final mix. Thanks though for your thought out answer. 👍🏻

    It would be interesting to know how the conversion and clocking on the EVO 16 stacks up in terms of quality. Compared to a UAD Apollo X series or a newer RME model?

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The conversation feels really solid, I work on an Apollo X16 every day here. I was not missing them during the tracking of this video at all. I think the biggest difference is pre-amp head room with regards to the Apollo’s, as well as the headphone amps in the Apollo’s have a little more juice on them. It is hard to compare given the massive price difference between the units. :)

    • @LoftyAssertions
      @LoftyAssertions ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rjb7569 I really agree, I wouldn't have purchased it if I had known it didn't have MIDI and would have ended up with a Scarlett instead. I actually just assumed it would have MIDI given it's size.
      However the software is the best I've ever used and Smart Gain really is no gimmick, it's fantastic especially for full band scenarios, but I've found that over the last 6 months I miss physical knobs, as the input gains occasionally and unpredictably reset to 0db and the output does every time the unit is powered off. Not a big deal at all, just a minor inconvenience.
      Like all things, it can't be perfect.

    Hey Alec, The mic you're using for dialogue in this video, is it the earthworks ETHOS?
    I was wondering what your opinion on that mic would be for recording singing/acoustic guitar and other instruments. Earthworks said their goal was to go for the sm7b, but it has more crisp high frequencies and is super cardioid. so might help take away some of the room tone/ outside sounds in a home studio. When I asked if it could be used on stage for singing close miking they said that could also work, even though they marketed it as a broadcast mic. They said its really close in sound to the Earthworks SR 314 also.

    Was looking forward to this review. This interface is a real game changer. I've heard comparisons between Presonus 24i/o and UA interfaces that cost 6 times as much....there's literally no difference in quality, only features. With almost every manufacturer using identical SM components in the audio paths and the same clocks and ADCs, it's difficult to really justify the very high cost of 'some' interfaces. Audient EVO 16 only serves to underline this problem.

    I just can't find a nerdy test on how converters sound compared to other interfaces in the "under 1000" market (eg Motu ultralite mk5, Focusrite Clarett+ etc.), which I suppose is the target that would make evo 16 stunning, instead of the "under 500" market in which it would "just" be the most functional and maybe cool i/f.

    Using a pair of Neumann U67s with the Evo 16 feels like a bit of a slap in the face to the budget market. It's like testing a Scarlett 2i2 with a Chandler REDD mic. It does sound good though! That's for sure.

I'm not completely sure why, but it end up feeling like it dwarfs the reasons for buying a budget interface, or a certain irrelevancy in terms of listening environment or capture quality for people who are shopping for a $500 interface. Maybe it's that for someone who does have that kind of mic cabinet, your problems of tracking are going to be very different than what a $500 interface has to offer, beyond preamp quality. It's just a real psychological mismatch.

      @@alecbrits EVO has been ordered. Part of my decision is needing the additional funds for more microphones now that I'm starting to record drums. I have 2x Apogee Rosetta 800's as my other 16 channels of conversion, so the switch to the EVO will only affect 1/3 of my channels. This is a hobby for me, so I have to make some compromises here and there.
      I expect the biggest drop off in sound quality to be with the D/A for monitoring. My long-term plan is to get a Trinnov ST-2 Pro to handle room correction and monitoring conversion.

      @@alecbrits Actually no company I have found out will give you latency results including EVO.
      They will say you results will vary. That is the whole point of me asking you. I think EVO to me at a least should have done like MOTU and added thunderbolt to the unit along with USB. It would have only added $100 or so to the unit and I know the latency would be very low with thunderbolt.
      So in the beginning of this video you state EVO has no control over your content yet you can not answer a latency question?
      Sound like your videos are not free to give your honest opinion to me.
      Now a few years back I had tested a USB 2 versus my current fire wire inter phase and the USB was worse in latency than my old unit.
      So again I will ask can you post your latency results or see if EVO will let you? I am looking for a new inter-phase and looking at the Presonus 2626 versus this EVO. The youtube reviews are stating the Presonus 2626 has extremely low latency less than .5 round trip at 192.

    I'm presently using the Audient ID14 mkii Audio interface. It has great preamps that I love. I'm not a fan of analogue gears because I believe their time is gone and there are great plugins that can do the job rather than waste money on analogue gears. Great engineers are now mixing totally in the box and mastering using plugins. So I'm looking for a 2 channel interface that has the balance of great mic preamp and prestine mastering grade D/A and A/D converters.
