  • Everything you want to know about the Evo 16, 24in/24out audio interface by Audient. We'll cover how to record, how to use Loopback, use the on-screen mixer, audio routing, Alt Speaker, Function Button, Mono Mode, Talkback, how to use Cue Mixes, Phantom Power, Stereo Linking, and everything else in this single video. 🤯
    #Audient #AudioInterface #Evo16
The EVO 16 sets a new standard for features vs. price. There is simply nothing else out there in this price range that has the same amount of I/O and features.
This audio interface is perfect for beginners through advanced producers. It's easy to use, but is also feature rich, which the pros will appreciate.
The Evo 16 has 8 analog inputs, and 2 of them can be set to instrument level for guitar or bass. You have a 58dB gain range (from -8 to +50dB), and the preamps have an open and natural sound.
There are 8 analog outputs, so that's plenty for connecting multiple sets of studio monitors or other outboard gear.
There are 2 Optical inputs and outputs, so you can easily expand the I/O with another 16 inputs and outputs, like with a couple external microphone preamps.
You have 2 independent headphone outputs, a programmable Function button, the Motion UI screen, 48 volt Phantom Power per channel, and Smartgain.
Smartgain will automatically set your input gain levels for you in under 20 seconds. You can even use Smartgain across all 8 channels at the same time! Imagine being able to setup 8 mics on a drum kit, and within 20 seconds your input gain is set, and you're ready to record 🚀
The Evo 16 has buttons in the mixer that can activate Talkback, switch speakers, Mono mode, Dim, and Cut (Mute), plus you can program these functions to the F button on the front of the Evo unit for quick access.
The Motion UI screen will show you your input and output levels, gain level, and volume level at a glance. And the screen is viewable from any angle.
Loopback is also included! So you can easily record computer audio into your DAW or even send DAW audio out into something like OBS, Google Meet, Zoom, etc... for livestreaming or screen recording.
Loopback is an awesome way to livestream with your DAW for an online concert, gaming, online music lessons, or creating plugin and DAW review videos.
Loopback is a MUST HAVE, and it's included with the Evo 16. We'll cover Loopback for both Windows and Mac since there are a couple differences, like needing to use something like Rogue Amoeba Loopback, or Ginger Audio GroundControl Room.
The on-screen Evo Mixer makes it easy to setup your no-latency monitor mix, and to route your audio. You will completely understand the mixer and routing by the end of this video.
Besides all of that, there are STILL more features on the Evo 16! And they will all be covered here. To make things easy, everything is split up into Chapters so you can navigate to just the part you want to see (you're welcome) 😏

Thanks for the great video. I was wondering, if I have an Older Allen & Heath ZED r16 mixer with the ability to send 16 channels of ADAT. Could this unit receive 16 ADAT channels from my ZED and then send it on to my Mac using Luna DAW? 16 mono channels from my ZED?

By far the best explanation of how to use the EVO16 itself as well as the software mixer. I Would also say the same regarding the series of tutorials for the Eleven Rack as I own both. I am purely a hobbyist who loves to learn the technology of recording and mixing as well as the musical applications. I have set up a 24 track home studio using my DAW along with the EVO 16 and two 8 Chanel preamps using ADAT and BNC to output 24 analogue channels in to 24 line inputs on an analogue mixer. Of course I realise that this sounds crazy when all this can be done in the box but I am enjoying the experience of learning to mix old style. I record directly in to my Interface as well as connecting my Integra-7 and my Eleven Rack and only use the mixer as a tape return for learning how to mix using older outboard gear which I have accumulated over the years. Keep up the great work. Regards Alan

Dude, this video is excellent! I've been super intrigued about this interface. The amount of features for its price range is unheard of. I have a Focusrite Clarett 4Pre, which I really enjoy, but having loopback for any potential streaming/TH-cam video creation is huge and saves a lot of time while adding efficiency. I think the vast majority of people would be hard-pressed to notice a difference with the mic preamps. Strongly considering this for home use and daisy-chaining it to my 4Pre!

I was planning to buy another brand, but decided to buy this EVO16 after watching this excellent product review. This unit cost me about $50 more that the one I was planning to buy, but this unit gives me 8 inputs (4 more than the other one), 4 more outputs, ADAT + the smart gain option. Here's hoping OBS is gonna get a channel-by-channel implementation of Core soon bc all these workarounds are a PITA. Using a separate interface for loopback at the moment because the last thing I want to do is make loopback audio inputs 1 & 2 on my interface for it to work in OBS.

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah that will work, that's the "old school" way to do Loopback and it's a solid choice. I doubt OBS will implement a per channel Core Audio system because it's a lot of work and it can break when the OS gets updated. It's really something Apple needs to do.
I understand that Apple made Core Audio this way to make it "easier" for people to use, but when it comes to streaming or screen capturing - Core Audio is much more difficult to use.
I know it's expensive, but Rogue Amoeba Loopback is an awesome app, and it solves all of your problems. And they are quick in updating when a new OS breaks what they did in the backend to make individual Inputs & Outputs availible.

Thanks very much, it's very detailed indeed! But one thing that is not clear to me, and would be the deciding factor is this: is the smart gain really setting the gain during those first 20 seconds only, and not adjusting it later any longer? I'm recording live classical Indian instruments with singing, and setting the gain to such a low level that I'm pretty sure no human being can sing or play louder than that, when things really get going, in a hall full of people singing and clapping along, they still manage to cause clipping in the recording (which I'm not noticing because I'm focusing on the live monitor and house mixes). Well, probably also because they refuse in-ear monitoring and want monitors right in front of them, so there is a logarithmic increase of sound. Anyhow, I would really benefit from having a truly smart gain monitoring for my recordings, that will decrease the gain in these moments. But this system cannot do that, or can it?

Really thorough video!!! You have a knack for knowing the real questions that users are going to need to have answered. I have a question about this unit and your opinion of it. I've been used to mixing through Apogee converters for years now, but this unit really seems to have all of the I/O that I need , going forward. I know the gap has narrowed greatly between conversion quality today, versus 10 years ago. How do you feel about this unit being the sole interface to mix and master with? Thanks bud 👍🏻👍🏻

Never used Apogee preamps or converters. The Evo preamps are good and clean. Very natural sound. Not alot of color. You check out the converter specs here evo.audio/products/audio-interfaces/evo-16/specifications/ and see if they match up to your Apogee.

Nice Review! It's really a piece of gold. I was dreaming to see this interface with SPDIF and MIDI connections. But until now, did not find in any web site, information concerning EVO 16 audio latency using usb-c cable. First, USB 2 is not the same as USB-C. Cannot understand this information. USB-C is supposed to deliver faster speeds than USB 2. But anyway can you tell me about latency? If you for example set ASIO to 128 samples at 44kHz, under Windows 11. How far you with latency? 5, 6 or 7ms? In your video I think I saw a setup with 256 samples at 48kHz with 5.6ms. Am I right? Thanks and congratulations for this nice video.

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The exact latency you get will depend on your CPU. If you are referring to the direct monitor, then it's basically zero latency. Sure "zero latency" doesn't technically exist, but there is no perceivable latency when listening through the mixer. Again, the latency from your DAW depends on your system. The drivers are stable and well written.
As far as USB-C, it's more for the standard. Nobody wants another USB-B connector on a device. It's too big, and nobody wants those cables, but everyone has USB-C.
USB2.0 is more than fast enough for a 24in/24out interface.
Focusrite has a good explanation of this support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/208095469-Why-are-Focusrite-interfaces-USB-2-0-not-USB-3-0-

I would imagine you could create a send in your DAW to output to a pair of outputs , probably using DAW THRU... Run it in to the Reverb and back into a pair of inputs.
Or even create an AUX return in your DAW if you are monitoring though the DAW.

    Hello,
    Great video,
I have an Studio PC (Windows 10) with an RME Fireface 400 Audio Interface that I use for music production in a DAW (Ableton Live 11 and FL Studio 12) and DJ work (Traktor pro 3 and Rekordbox)
I have an second PC in the studio, lets call it Streaming PC (Windows 11) that I use for watching internet content, movies and listening to music.
I’m interested in purchasing the EVO 16 Audio Interface.
I saw the Manual and searched the net but couldn’t find the definitive answers to the questions I have like:
1 . Is it possible to use EVO 16 as an audio interface for the Streaming PC (Windows 11) connected with an usb to it and run the audio from the internet content, movies and listening to music from the outputs 1 & 2 into a pair of PA Active speakers (B),
    and
Also plug Hardware Synths into the 8 inputs of the EVO 16 and run those inputs from EVO 16 ADAT OUT 1 into the RME Fireface 400 ADAT IN (conected to the Studio PC) and have those 8 inputs from EVO 16 in my Studio PC for DAW work and to hear them in the Studio Monitor Active Speakers (A) that are connected through RME outputs?
    2. For clocking purposes do I need to set RME Fireface 400 as master and EVO 16 as slave?
    3. For clocking purposes do I need connect also the RME Fireface 400 ADAT out to EVO 16 ADAT IN 1?
    4. For clocking purposes do I need connect also RME Fireface 400 Word Clock IN to EVO 16 Word Clock Out?
    5. Will the EVO 16 function as standalone inputs expansion unit via the ADAT to my RME Fireface 400 if I want to have my Streaming PC turned off?
So basicly, instead of going for the Behringer ADA8200 for aditional 8 inputs to my Studio PC via the ADAT in of my RME FF400 and the EVO 8 as an audio interface for the Streaming PC i can go for the EVO 16 and will fulfill the double duty i need ? (more inputs into studio pc and soundcard for streaming pc)
Both options are around the same cost 400- 450 euros, but, going to the EVO 16 i could have another interface as backup if RME FF400 breaks or to play live (my laptop has no firewire port)
    Thank you,

thanks for the review, seems like you have experience with the id44 too, do you know why the evo 16 is cheaper than the id44 despite having more input pres? what do you get on the id44 for paying more?

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The iD44 MKII is a premium audio interface with higher-end preamps and converters. It also has more Function buttons, and ScrollControl. I wish there was a way to combine the two 😂 I've been switching back and forth between the Evo 16 and iD44. I'll have a detailed video about the iD44 MKII in the coming weeks.
There are alot of similarities between the two though. The Mixer is pretty much identical, they have many of the same Functions like: Talkback, Alt Speaker, Mono, Dim, Mute. They both have Loopback, both have two instrument inputs, two headphone outputs.
What you are really paying for with the iD44 MKII is the more powerful pre-amps (60dB gain) and upgraded converters. Also the physical switches and individual knobs cost more than the digitally controlled system of the Evo 16.
I would love to see a iD88 with 8 inputs and 8 outputs.
Which one you buy will depend on what you need and your budget, just like anything else.

The Evo series is more gimicky than Audient's pro line. Still good stuff, but definitely gimicky (lots of bells and whistles/shiny lights, for cheap). • @BenoniStudio

That wouldn't give you what you want. You would want to add an external mic pre if you want more IO. If you are on a budget then the Behringer ADA8200 Ultragain Digital will give you and other 8 channels and it only costs around $200. Get it from Sweetwater imp.i114863.net/NKD79O or Amazon amzn.to/3rJx0Qw You could even add 2 units if you want another 16 channels.
But you need to ask yourself if you really need 24 simultaneous channels. Are recording an orchestra or a giant 18 piece drum kit? For most people recording themselves or a band, 16 simultaneous I/O is usually more than enough. But only you know the answer to that question.
