George Gershwin is considered a classic of "symphonic jazz", if only because of his "Rhapsody in Blue" and his opera "Porgy and Bess", which became worldwide successes. The already successful rag pianist and songwriter initially approached classical instruments with respect. A first and already fully successful attempt is "Lullaby for String Quartet", a "ragtime lullaby" based on a piano piece from 1919, carried by slow ragtime syncopations.
