This is scored for full orchestra, but it was written for a string quartet. It is a foretaste of what Gershwin might have done next. Shortly before his death he said he wanted to write chamber music after finishing his stint under Sam Goldwyn. I think he wanted to demonstrate that he did not need pizzazz and big forces to make an impression in the concert hall, and that his matchless abilities as a tunesmith were being increasingly reinforced by technical skills as a painter on a small canvas. He never stopped listening and trying for more.

The melody of course is wonderful, but the arrangement is what makes this piece work. I've been a Slatkin fan for years.!

I read once that he was intending to work on a sequel to "Porgy and Bess." What might have been.
My highschool is playing this for our next concert. It’s one of my favorite songs by far 💜 I play the cello
