George: You were a very gifted human being and a better musician. Thanks for giving us such a treasure, spending your short time thinking on our emotional and intelectual enjoyment. We have your brightness with us for endlessly. You live still every time we listen to your music. You set up an example of things well done. Thank you so much

Allthough I agree, I dont think George has TH-cam, wherever he might be now. I hope he has a piano and violins though.

I keep returning to this gorgeous performance. Since I discovered it I've been seeking other performances by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Thanks for posting so many!

The melody of course is wonderful, but the arrangement is what makes this piece work. I've been a Slatkin fan for years.!

This is scored for full orchestra, but it was written for a string quartet. It is a foretaste of what Gershwin might have done next. Shortly before his death he said he wanted to write chamber music after finishing his stint under Sam Goldwyn. I think he wanted to demonstrate that he did not need pizzazz and big forces to make an impression in the concert hall, and that his matchless abilities as a tunesmith were being increasingly reinforced by technical skills as a painter on a small canvas. He never stopped listening and trying for more.

I read once that he was intending to work on a sequel to "Porgy and Bess." What might have been.

"Tell me, George, if you had it to do all over, would you fall in love with yourself again?"--Oscar Levant to his good friend George Gershwin.

The only modern piece I like. Too bad for the two coughs at the end - done on purpose? Shameful, if so.
