Todays used bar of soap shapes with sea monster shaped front and rear ends have taken the style out of cars.

That's because 1959 was in that unique "as close to perfection" as the U.S. would EVER get, following World War II. Never forget that. The styling these cars had were a beautiful marriage of optimism, WW II aircraft and the Jet Age all at the same time. Once mid-century was over, it was never the same. Things are SO bad now, even 1991 seems more like the '50s than the 2010's! .

Thanks Daniel. I was 1 1/2 when these models came out in late '58, turning 60 in May, 2017. I wouldn't have fit in (as an adult) in that era only because of people smoking, seemingly everywhere. We have medical breakthroughs now and natural cures for things that are mainstream now. But we've been in a deader-than-dead generic present since about 1994, and it looks to be permanent. When it comes to cars, the only one I LOVE now is the 2017 Prius with the zig-zag taillights and laser lines with genuine TAILFINS. YEAH, a sexy NEW car with Jetson's styling and FINS!!
The new Hyundai Genesis's taillights look about 80% like the '59 Impala. Please check both cars out and tell me what you think.

Rocket-powered jet aircraft were pioneered in Germany. The first aircraft to fly under rocket power was the Lippisch Ente, in 1928.[3] The Ente had previously been flown as a glider. The next year, in 1929, the Opel RAK.1 became the first purpose-built rocket plane to fly.
The turbojet was invented in 1939, independently by Frank Whittle and later Hans von Ohain. The first turbojet aircraft to fly was the Heinkel He 178 V1 first prototype of the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe, on August 27, 1939 in Rostock (Germany).[4]

I have my parents 58 CADILLAC series 62 sedan, they bought in 1960 . I was 1 year old. Lifelong southern California car. Silver interior with a dark gray metallic exterior. Factory AC and power windows. I remember when I couldn't reach the door handles, and my legs dangled off the seat! lol. I'm 60 now, and I'm still driving it, around town for errands, and to car shows. Glad you experienced these caddys, and yes, you have to be in tune, and extra careful to drive these old cars, they dont handle ANYTHING like modern vehicles , and take extra time to slow down and stop all that weight. Mom an dad are gone now, but I still have their old car, and it's a touchstone to them for me.

One of the reasons why almost everyone drove a GM, Ford or Chrysler, the one's who could afford yearly redesigns. Effectively putting any 4th, or 5th largest, or as they liked to call them, independents out of business. In turn, the Japanese and Germans carried on the tradition so there are now only a handful of American brands still in existence.

Love this era of American cars... basically anything past the round lights, curved back style of the 40's and early 50's and before the Muscle cars that came around the 70's. I remember watching Jetson's reruns as a kid, thats where I was first exposed to the retro space-age era of cars that looks like space-ships and shinny diners lit up by neon's. I never got to live thru it but it's the most American thing I can think of, and it's one of my favorite settings for fiction... there's something that's even a bit creepy about it; the perfect lawns, white-picket fence and cheerful music.. all in an age when everything was as close as it ever has been to coming to an end in a blaze of nuclear fire.

These are the voyages of the starship, Oldsmobile, whose 98 year mission... Captain, one of out high beam deflector shields is burned out.
Compared to the 1958 Olds 98, this one has a modest amount of chrome trim. : )

Beautiful car, love the interior, the dash styling, the upholstery. Its amazing how close a fully optioned Olds 98 or Buick Electra was to a lower to mid trim Cadillac in terms of features, fit, finish, size etc The real difference were the engines, transmissions, and the styling. The Oldsmobile looked pretty tame compared to a 1959 Cadillac or Buick though.

Looks good today because you don't see them everywhere, you got to remember that by the mid 60s they looked dated and people were buying different styles.
Back in 59 all the old people would say the cars of the 30s looked better with more style and character about them.
Look at the old cars from the mid 1980s that looked so bland and commonplace, they're now being restored and showing up everywhere.
That's they way we are, always thinking that things were always better in the past, if they were then things would stay the same, the general public always want more for less and different styles, the guy that buys the brand new car wants people to see he's got the latest model so the manufacturers change the style to suit the needs of the buyer's

Clearly we need to go back to this styling with modern efficiency and engineering if more people are fond of looking and gawking at cars from 40 - 50 years ago than a modern one.
