The Olds had class and it was fast. The Chevys looked good but had a boring dashboard and only a 2 speed automatic. If you wanted a fast chevy you had to do lots of mods to get it there.

Lets all thank God for people who truly care enough and have enough $$$$ to restore and keep alive such works of art at that- I would probably take that over a new Ferrari or something similar due to the sheer class it exudes

    I had 55 Olds Delta 88 convertible.
My favorite thing to do was when leaving a concert or such and everybody was funneling down to the parking lot exit. I'd put it in drive and let it creep forward at idle. I never had to touch the brakes. It was like the parting of the red sea.

This is when cars were made like fine jewelry. now adays its all throwaway. I HIGHLY doubt there will be the same love affair with the current crop of cars 30-50 years after they were made like there is for these kinds of rides.

I don't care what they may say, I always liked that "suddenly, it's 1949" (2:12) look on the rear window of 1957 Buicks and Oldsmobiles (even if it does obstruct rear vision a little). I also love that oval shaped speedometer on '57 Oldsmobubbles. Great resto, and great video!

Bitchen car! I also like the '58 and the simple beauty of the 1954 88.
The 1950s - early '60s American cars were the epitome of styling and attention to detail.
To quote what has now become a cliche: "They just don't make 'em like that anymore."

The 1949-50-51 Rocket 88 Futuramic were some great cars with the Art Deco touches throughout the vehicle like on the door handles, mini-fins and so on. Oldsmobile continued from there. I think of the Olds dash like jewelry up until 1960, then from 61 to 65. 60 was kinda plain and after 65, they started looking not so jewelry like. 1957, 56, 55, 58, 59 4 door flattop Holiday, 61, 62, 64 were my favorites. Is that enough? More than any other make. Top 3, 57, 56, 62. And what could be a more cool name for a hardtop than Holiday?

I had it packed with friends from the air base and some anchor clankers from Portsmouth Naval Base. Someone asked how fast would it go. I had the speedo bouncing on 120. I loved that car. 1957, Olds made both a Golden Rocket & Super 88 in both sedan & Holiday sedan, which came as a pillarless hardtop or coupe. The Golden Rocket/Super 88 Fiesta wagons also had no pillars. Golden Rocket was base, Super midlevel, & Holiday an option for each. Next up were the longer, top-of-the-line Starfire 98 & its Holiday sedans & coupes. All model lines had the Holiday pillarless "hardtop" sedan & a convertible.
Base: Golden Rocket 88/Golden 88 Holiday Golden Rocket 88 Fiesta
Mid: Super 88/Super 88 Holiday Super 88 Fiesta
    Top: Starfire 98/Starfire 98 Holiday
This year featured gold-sprayed 371” Rocket 88 engine in both four-barrel & J-2 triple 2V carburetion; no 2V came til ’58 when they capped fore & aft carbs. The J-2 had 3 Rochesters; 1 linked & 2 vacuum-dumped, non-progressive linkage (front & rear gummed up from non-use). They also had a J-2R & J-2-W1 “export engines” with whatever Olds’ Bill Holt & Pete Estes could get away with as a factory engine part for Lee Petty (Olds gave all their parts a number so Bill France wouldn’t call them cheaters). You may have a thin, high 10-1 compression head gasket which some say were part of the package. Dimpled valve covers mean you have rare, semi-legitimate Isky or Crane solid-lifter cam & adjustable rockers for clearance.
Most multi-carb J-2’s came on the luxurious 98’s or the small, light, & sporty Golden 88 3-speed column shift 2-door sedan (an early Olds Road Runner-type). Then France saw they went too fast & pulled the plug on them anyhow.
*Found on web: Cosmetically, the 88s had no front fender namplates. Super 88s had Super 88 nameplates on the front fenders. At the back, 88s have plain tail light lenses, plain panels below the tail lights, and plain bumper ends (unless it has optional dual exhaust). Super 88S have tri-bar ornaments on the tail light lenses, stainless panels below the tail lights, stainless wiper cowl, and bumper ends with faux exhaust ports in them.

The BEST that Olds had to offer then and my Gawd what a beauty! My dad always drove Olds and it was great!
Luxury, Style and Power....not to mention dependable as well. When you bought Olds (especially the high end line) you were really buying something! That started coming to an end in the 70's and really went down the drain in the eighties but what car did not then? All American cars went to rust like hell and suffocate the most from our beloved EPA (mileage went to hell as did our car bodies). The worst EVER decade for cars was the 80's!

@@samspace81: No problem. Olds still did good. They just changed out the manifold and slapped on a big 4-barrel and still won a lot of races. Those were runners. I had a '58 Chieftain with the same engine with only a 2-barrel and it would burn rubber and throw you back into the seat like a champ! ---Jim

Overall nice clean car. Lose the crappy after market wheel skirts. GM didn't make them neither did the dealers offer them. The GM designers went to great lengths to create that nice silhouette sweeping belt line and then someone comes along and slaps 1938 pace arrow covers on the back.

    • @MR-je1jb
      @MR-je1jb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

First of all they are called fender skirts. And yes GM offered fender skirts on this car and countless other GM cars into the 90's. I beg to differ with you. What the car needs to lose is the crappy aftermarket chrome wheels. Lastly it is Pierce-Arrow.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not some 4 door Accord driving Nancey boy.
I wont drive something unless it has a 4 barrel.
I'm not knocking the early stuff either, you take that motor and shoe horn it into a chopped and sectioned Model A with a 4 speed your going to embarrass a lot of things on 4 wheels.
I'm just used to my 2500lb Falcon,
    Different strokes for different folks.

Man...what a shit-load of Bondo 'ripples' there are in that thick enamel paint, esp. the driver's door.Really pretty car...my family had a 1958 'Olds Holiday' sedan in a metallic-like blue finish and it was 'looker', no question.(these old cars are crap engineering compared to anything today...but they are pretty and distinctive! I remember when I could tell any make/model/year just from the tail-lights)

samspace81 I thought I did 'give her a break!' The car is a 'stunner'...although my personal favorite is the '53 Buick 'Skylark' and of course, the early '50's Cadillacs.
Cars had 'personality' then, something that doesn't exist w/them anymore.
(I 'fell in love' with anything w/wheels when little...and it never stopped)
Sometimes, I think when I see an old car...I think it is looking back at me and whispering 'take me home and take care of me and we'll go cruising together...we'll look good together'.
      Yeah, don't I wish!
