This band is a nation treasure in Canada. Their lead singer was diagnosed with cancer and they did a final nation wide tour where he wore colourful suits to celebrate his life and not mourn his upcoming death. Final show was nationally broadcast where a third of the country watched. Incredibly emotional to watch and i think a lot of canadians are like me, we get chills hearing any of their music now.

@coreyrees840 I was at the final show (you can see me several times in the crowd) and I broke down a couple of times, crying like a little girl. The thing about Hip shows was that it was the only place on earth you'd find hipsters and posers, bangers and soccer moms all rocking out together...because no one was out of place at a Hip show. You were one of us as long as you showed up. Man, I miss going to Hip shows.
I'm from Kingston. The Hip are gods here. It can actually be annoying. Saturation, I guess ... That said, I actually worked security at one of their concerts in the early 90s. Crazy event! Awesome! TBH I'm not a Hip fan and have never been. But their best song for me is "Finnegan's Wake"
On July 10, 1972, fourteen inmates escaped from Millhaven Maximum Security recreation yard by clipping the chain link fence. A subsequent manhunt was undertaken by police and Canadian Forces personnel. Three hundred police officers and soldiers from CFB Trenton created a cordon that eventually yielded the capture of most of the escapees.
I have to tell you, it brings tears to my eyes to see someone discover the Hip all these years later, and truly see what Canadians always saw. It resurrects Mr Downey to a world that never knew him or the tales he had to tell. It is wonderful to see such love for THE greatest band english Canada has ever produced, (and it has produced A LOT of great bands!) The Hip created modern folklore, and it touched our souls. I have no idea why the Hip never broke out on the US or world music scenes, but we loved them enough to make up for it. (I kinda like that they were ours, and ours alone. And I get the distinct impression they were happy to remain that.) Being part of the greater North American commercial soundscape, we don't get much of that outside of Québec. We miss you so much Gord.
Great reaction Saeed. I am always amazed how you "just get it" even on a first listen. You pick up the details and nuances of the performance and message. Great song by The Hip. Very emotional. I love Gord's delivery and lyrics. It adds so much to the already great guitar work.
It's not hyperbole to say "no band in music will paint you pictures as good as The Tragically Hip". Gord Downie was =an amazing poet=.Consider this bar: "See, my syster got raped! Some man got killed/Local boy went to prison, man's buried on the hill//Folks went back to normal when they closed the case/They still stare at their shoes when they pass our place " Jesus that's🔥 Everyone at the time wanted break into America, because "making it big in the US is 'the dream'". Being foreign... to be Canadian? That was like 'to have a handicap' as an artist/band. The Tragically Hip were Canadians that said "fuck the money/fame, let's write about 🍁because it's actually OK to be Canadian"- another reason why they're so loved in 🍁
In 73 there was a prison break in Kingston, where the Trafically Hip are from. One of the band members dads was a judge, and the whole family had to be moved for fear that one of the inmates would seek retribution. What is beautiful is that the adult Downie, reflecting on this, empathized in a way with the prisoners and their sad existence.38 years old - never kissed a girl.
As I have no qualms in repeating myself, you, my dear friend have a quality in your heart and soul that not only allows you to write what I am sure are great books, but also can pick up on the meaning of song lyrics so well, and so quickly. You simply amaze me. Even your thoughts are,in turn, thought provoking to us, your dedicated subscribers. The background to this song as was stated by one of my fellow commentors, is heartbreaking. These guys opened Day 2 at Woodstock 99... the crowd was full of Canadian flags. It was one hell of a set... Gord was in his own world, adlibbing stories out of the blue, without missing a beat. I've never heard anyone like that... except maybe Jim Morrison. You should definitely watch their Woodstock set here on TH-cam... you won't be disappointed. 😎

Always loved this song…. I was raised in Kingston (like the band was). The prisons were a big part of the culture there as there were many. They were the second largest employer, next to the university. Everybody knew somebody who worked in one of the prisons, and occasionally (not often) there would be an escape and a big manhunt.
Love that you’re getting in to listening these guys. I highly recommend Nautical disaster if you haven’t listened/reacted to that one. It’s another great story told by Gord and a metaphor.
You are very good at getting this band. Fiddler’s Green will tear you apart if you liked this one. I love that you follow the lyrics. Reactors that just follow the music miss a lot of what makes this band magic: Gord’s story telling/lyrical genius combined with the band serving the song
Its close, song came out in 1989, 35 years ago roughly. Thanks for taking the time getting to know Canada's Official Rock Band. Mike hadn't yet kissed a girl at 20 because he wasn't a typical 20 year old. He was not all there in the head and/or was intellectually impaired. That's why the prison called the house, knowing he'd just go home, and why the police said "Lets go son, we're taking you home" instead of the typical way of handling escapees.
