Hey, folks! As I mentioned in the video-description, I check the lyrics online after listening and doing my immediate post-reaction thoughts (on-camera), so stick around to the end if that interests you. Cheers, and shout-out to David, Yvonne, and all other Hip fans!
The way I always read this story: sister of the Narrator (and Mike) was raped, and Mike (at 20) avenged her, during which "some men got killed." Mike gets life (for multiple murders), of which he'd served 18 years before breaking out, presumably to see his parents for even one night before the Mounties (RCMP) go find him at the obvious place and "take him home" to Milhaven Maximum Security. Additional Trivia: in my head I imagine this to be a companion piece to Coward of the County- I know the stories don't line up perfectly but whatever.
I always thought this was about David Milgaard. Or Guy Paul Morin. Turns out this story happened when I was just a toddler. Either way this song makes me sad. Whole families get destroyed when these things happen.
Simply put, sister got raped, Mike the brother kills the rapists, goes to prison at 18 ( too young). Forward to the song Mike breaks out from Millhaven Max prison. Shows up at home and is brought back. Tears at your feelings because I am not sure I would do any different if someone I love got raped. Keep up the great reactions. Stay Safe.🤙
I hope you’ll do more Hip when you get to the end of Yer Favourites. I would encourage you not to go back to the beginning. While Up to Here and Road Apples are great, they are ultimately less interesting than the mid-career and later stuff. I would suggest diving in at Day for Night since you’re already familiar with the band

"It seems every band has to write a song about a nautical disaster, this is our version, it's called NAUTICAL DISASTER" - Gord Downie.

Perhaps my favourite of theirs . RIP Gord .
Great reaction Matt. Thanks for this reaction. This is a great story, of how The Hip supported David Milgaard and his bid for freedom.

It's definitely about David Milgaard
@@mjking9019 Wheat Kings is about Milgaard. This song is not.
@@tukkerintensity5575 I've always heard that this was also about Milgaard.

Cheers, currently I only have access to Yer Favourites. But hopefully someone can help with proper albums after that.
