Canada's house band. The Hip as we call them. David Milgaard was from my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. I do remember when all this happened. Gord Downie was a poet and an amazing front man. Unfortunately he passed from the same form of brain cancer as Neil Peart from Rush. Unlike Neil though he wanted to do one last tour before passing. He had to relearn all the songs as the cancer had taken his memory. Their last concert was televised across Canada commercial free. A third of Canada including myself watched that concert.
We all helped him sing in the final concert that night…. The emotions were running high and the tears were flowing..I’ve seen them 5 times and it was hard to believe it was going to be over…😢 Rip Gord 🫶
As a fellow old school Pegger, I remember this so well. The legal system is not a justice system, it is a money system. This whole story made that real for me. This is Canada's Greatest Band Ever.
"David Milgaard was a 16-year-old hippie when he was charged with the rape and murder of Saskatoon nurse Gail Miller in 1969. Milgaard's prosecution for first degree murder at age 17 became one of Canada's most notorious wrongful convictions. He was finally released in 1992 after 23 years in prison. DNA evidence exonerated him in 1997 and led to the conviction of Larry Fisher, a serial sex offender, in 1999. Milgaard received an official apology from the Saskatchewan government in 1997 and a $10 million settlement in 1999. Milgaard became an advocate for prison reform and the rights of the accused and helped establish a federal commission to investigate cases of alleged wrongful conviction."
I remember his story but what the fuck having your shit circumstances in life made into a song. Nice. I guess locked in the trunk of a car was Bernardo? Sorry for the glib joke.
Fisher died in prison in 2015 at the age of 65. David's family made no comment, but his lawyer made a statement ending with: "One doesn't like to speak ill of the dead, but it's certainly impossible to speak good."
Before Gord died, the Hip went on one last tour, while Gord was still able to. The final night, in their hometown, really was the final night. It was broadcast coast to coast, by the CBC. We had a collective sob.
Saeed, as you can gather from the comments "The Hip" are a national treasure here in Canada. As we like to say.."We gave the world Rush...but... kept The Hip for ourselves."....
As someone from Kingston, where the Hip are from, I really appreciate your thoughtful comments on this beautiful tune. Please research their story and review more songs. You won't be disappointed. Brings tears to my eyes always! Thank you! ❤
I'll throw my hat in the ring here too - as far as the Hip songs that exhibit amazing writing, one of my favourites is Fiddler's Green. It's beautiful in its writing, but positively heart breaking when you learn the story behind it. In brief, it's about his sister losing her son to a heart condition, the story goes that he couldn't play the song live for ~20 years after he wrote it. It was so painful each time he played that he would choke up and couldn't finish. But its an absolutely beautiful song full of nautical metaphors. Gord had a way with his writing, he was truly an amazing story teller and he's missed dearly.
Just an amazing band. Not Canadian, Seattlite, but know The Hip hold the most sacred places North. Gord...poet. Look into them some. A treasure of a band. To add, they are amazing live. Good videos abound. 😊
I live in the city the terrible incident occurred in many years ago, Saskatoon, SK (the Paris of the Prairies). Incidentally, the hometown of Joni Mitchell as well. Such a heartbreaking story, and Gord Downie spent his entire life speaking to the injustices of people who often did not have a voice. Wheat Kings is one of the most beautiful songs, yet for Canadians this sad story is ingrained in our collective conscience, particularly here. Amazing reaction as always.
@@incensejunkie7516 after Larry Fisher was released from prison, for previous crimes, and before he was convicted of this crime, I saw him at a mall here in Saskatoon. He was sitting on a bench. One of the best Canadian band. My #1 band for sure. Their catalogue is so rich. Words, poetry, guitar, Gord’s presence, perfect blend. You should listen to Fiddlers green. Heart breaking, as Gord sings for his nephew.
My father worked for the Canadian documentary making organization, the National Film Board and through it knew David's mother Joyce who worked tirelessly for decades to have her son's conviction overturned. Grateful she succeeded and he got to have a wife and children before he passed.
The Tragically Hip fuses folk with blues with rock. Lead singer Gord Downie was an amazing song writer , poet , story teller , front man , live performer and humanitarian. Hope to see more Hip reactions. “It’s a Good Life if You Don’t Weaken” is a personal favourite.

It is 100% worth reading about the David Milgaard story. He spent the rest of his life in service of others, not too far from where I live, before his passing. I likely drove or walked by him numerous times over the years without even realizing it.
The Hip are so special ❤ Thanks for doing more of them. They just released a comprehensive 4 part documentary series called No Dress Rehearsal last week I believe. RIP Gordie 💕
So many of the songs are about Canada and Canadian events. Gord was such a creative writer and proud Canadian and i truly miss him but at least we have the music the hip created
I am so pleased to have discovered you today. I have heard this song many times and loved it each time it played. Your visceral and honest reaction gave me a deeper understanding and feeling about it. Thank you for such a great gift!
DNA wasn't available to clear people until the 90s. They cleared David, though the case was shoddy to begin with, and though the government compensated him with money, it didn't stop his grief.
If you are interested in another similar song, I would highly recommend Hurricane by Bob Dylan. Truly another masterpiece by Dylan. You may already know the true story, Denzel Washington won the Oscar for playing Rubin Hurricane Carter in the movie Hurricane. Dylan was instrumental in the release of Carter from prison after 25 years. One of my favourite Dylan songs just as this is perhaps my favourite Tragically Hip song.
What a terrific movie, and fantastic song. I love how he song's energy is stormy and uplifting at the same time. And it is one of the few of Dylan's nasally songs where "his voice as an instrument" doesn't bother me.
The crazy thing about this song is, if you dont pay attention to the lyrics and just listen to the music its beautiful and calming . Then you add the lyrics and the meaning behind it and it becomes heart breaking. My next Hip recommendation will be more of their rocking side. What song do others think would be the best for the next one?
There are so many brilliant choices though as an introduction I would probably stick to the fan favourites. The obvious choices, New Orleans is Sinking or Bobcaygeon. My personal favourites are Wheat Kings, Grace Too, 38 Years Old and Fiddler’s Green.
Canada's house band! ❤Gord is one of our great poets...bc he grew up listening to our other great poets, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young and a whole lot of others, we have amazing amount of musical talent up here! 🎼☮️👌💞🎶😎

So rare to see the Hip on reaction videos, and it's really a shame since they are such an amazing band. I hope you'll react to more of them! A couple of recommendations: Fifty Mission Cap, The Darkest Ones, Bobcaygeon
The balance between "the abstract and vagueness and the specific and the performance", beautifully said Saeed. Gord's gift for doing this I think is at its peak with this song and Fiddler's Green. Fiddle's Green is a heart-wrenching song about the death of his sister's infant son. It is full of nautical metaphor and incredible acoustic licks from Rob Baker A song they would rarely perform live so as not to appear to be benefiting from other's grief. But near the end of Gord's life they performed it regularly, acknowledging how cathartic the song was for others (even though Gord, a true word smith, had something against the word catharsis and would say so rhyming it with My-arsse-is).
As a Canadian, I've watched quite a few people react to our Canadian treasures. This was truly a pleasure to watch, your understanding and appreciation for both the story and the song, and all the facets involved in both, was brilliant. Might I suggest either New Orleans Is Sinking or Blow At High Dough as your next Hip earworm. Both of them are beautifully crafted bangers, that I think you'll appreciate both the lyricism and musicianship of.
The greatest thing about Gord Downie is that he was not afraid to speak some dark truths about Canada, but never once did we ever doubt his love for this place. We are a stronger people for having known his words. I'd be interested to see your reaction to Downie's Secret Path project. If you think "Wheat Kings" is an infuriating story and a shame on Canada, youve only scratched the surface.
in prison from 16 to 39 for a crime he didn't commit- his whole youth. It's almost unbearable to think about. This band is treasured in Canada, would love to hear more reactions!
@@SaeedReacts. some I will suggest for their lyrical content especially are: Little Bones, At the Hundreth Meridian, So Hard Done By, Long Time Running, Scared, Nautical Disaster, Blow at High Dough... there are honestly at least a dozen more I could name, and then more after that that I could recommend just for their sonic perfection. The Hip are so unique in their lyrics, Gord's voice, great musicianship, and their use of Canadian history in their songs. One of my all time favourite bands and I saw them many times in my youth.
Next up Hurricane by Bob Dylan, where a former Championship Level Boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was set up by the Patterson New Jersey Police for a murder he did not commit . 3 Canadian Students found out about it, moved to Patterson, were harassed on a daily basis, but never stopped, leading the charge until he was freed years later. Rubin moved to Canada and helped an organization to free innocent victims.

At the time, this was a big Canadian national storey in the news. Hence the "CBC" (Canadian Brodcasting Corporation). The CBC is Federal government owned, and the one TV station all Canadians have access to.
Milgaard's release from prison also kicked off a series of high profile reviews in Canada that resulted in half a dozen more innocent men being released after years in prison for various crimes.
If it was just a few short years earlier. We wouldn't be talking about this. He would've been put to death. This case is the best case against the death penalty.
Larry Fisher was convicted of this crime. When the crime took place, Larry was living with his wife in a basement suite of a house. David was visiting the people who were on the main level. Police found evidence leading up to the house. - zippo Lighter I believe. I will stop there as I am not positive on any other facts.
This is why Canada and most other countries don't have a death penalty. Mistakes are inevitable, and the government killing innocent people is unacceptable.
@@SaeedReacts. The fact I have to explain it to you is the reason for the statement. Your assessment of the song and group was great. Every Canadian has an emotional attachment to these guys. I simply cannot put in words as can you, what this music means. They make Canadians feel whole, they make us feel a part of something bigger than just a song or verbiage. You tried but it is just explainable. You are great, Hip are great
Sorry to bring you down after the hilltop hoods lifted you up. Lol but thought you might like this one The Hip actually released a new song a few months ago. I think it was one that wasn't finished before they lost Gord.
If you liked this one, "Bobcaygeon" from the Hip has always had the same musical vibes to me, and I love it just as much. Very different subject, obviously.
I counted too many victims in this murder; the main victim Gail, next his family and friends, then David, her mother, family and friends,... And I guess the real murderer was never found and no one paid for the police or judicial errors. Maybe I guess too much, I'm not certain 🙏. There are many movies based on true stories that deal with similar issues 😔. How much unnecessary suffering. Well, life is plenty of injustices 😔. Greetings
I clicked because I love this band and knew these fine men as they were getting started in Kingston. I tell you honestly and with respect, you talked too much during your reaction.

The Loons and the Raven you hear in the beginning of the song go straight to the core of all Canadians. It is Canada! Great Reaction!!
As an American I hear the loons and I immediately think of Red Green. 😊
Powerful song! Thanks for watching!
@@Kevin-i6t5i Duct tape solves all problems!!
Thanks for sharing that!
Fiddler's Green is also based on a personal life experience to two members of the band and one of my favourite songs by The Hip
Thank you so much for this reaction. My favourite Hip song….Rip Gord❤
Incredible song! Thanks for watching.
Keep exploring Canadian music .
Check out the Headstones . You'll love em .
Will add them to my list. Thanks!
Awesome review, man. I'd love to see you react to The Hip more, Gord Downie was a fantastic writer, I think you'd enjoy a lot more of theijr songs.
Thanks so much. Hope to explore more! I also listened to Ahead by a Century. Great song!
Please do more songs from the tragically hip. Any song from any album and thanks for keeping Gords memory alive ❤️🇨🇦 RIP
I definitely want to check out more! Thanks for watching!
If it was just a few short years earlier. We wouldn't be talking about this. He would've been put to death. This case is the best case against the death penalty.
Please do some more Hip. Your reactions are so thoughtful. I wonder how you’d react to a song like Scared or Locked in the Trunk of a Car
Thanks for the kind words and the recommendation!
Downey was a poet. And he held this nation in his palms. In his words.
Would love to see more Hip reactions from you.
Hope to do more! Been quite busy with requests this past month. Definitely have some songs on my long todo list :)
i'm 39 now and it's extremely difficult to imagine being in prison since i was 16 and only just released today for a specific act that never happened.
and the person that actually did it still out there laughing about it.
100%. Cant imagine being in that situation.
This is why Canada and most other countries don't have a death penalty. Mistakes are inevitable, and the government killing innocent people is unacceptable.
I miss those days when Canada was a united country
Better times
The his means zero to this man. But this means everything to every Canadian
I hear it means a lot to Canadians. Don't know why the first part of your comment is needed though. Was i disrespectful in my video?
@@SaeedReacts. The fact I have to explain it to you is the reason for the statement. Your assessment of the song and group was great. Every Canadian has an emotional attachment to these guys. I simply cannot put in words as can you, what this music means. They make Canadians feel whole, they make us feel a part of something bigger than just a song or verbiage. You tried but it is just explainable. You are great, Hip are great
Sorry to bring you down after the hilltop hoods lifted you up. Lol but thought you might like this one
The Hip actually released a new song a few months ago. I think it was one that wasn't finished before they lost Gord.
No worries, mate! :) Great song and what a story. I read some articles about it and its heartbreaking and so frustrating.
Gord can write a song or two!
If you liked this one, "Bobcaygeon" from the Hip has always had the same musical vibes to me, and I love it just as much.
Very different subject, obviously.
Thanks for the recommendation! Definitely want to hear more
Great band.
Hopefully Canada supports the videos enough to make it worth your time.
It was a very thoughtful reaction. Good luck!
All those names were people that had convictions that were later found to be wrong by DNA evidence
Or was he a man of character? And the killer ran free, was probably forward in his denial. People don’t see that.
Thanking god that Canada does not have the death penalty. As America just executed an innocent man in Missouri.
Terrible. Very scary that can happen to innocent people.
Greetings
Larry Fisher was convicted of the crime.

I clicked because I love this band and knew these fine men as they were getting started in Kingston. I tell you honestly and with respect, you talked too much during your reaction.
That is my style of reactions, thanks for trying!
