I rode these passes several times and in both directions in 1956 and 1957. I had a 1955 Ariel Huntmaster 650cc vertical twin, a lovely bike and very comfortable to ride. The road is pretty much how I remember it after all this time although the camera is very much inclined to flatten out the gradient which at times feels almost vertical! 1 in 3 in places. I found the camera panning rather disconcerting , I would have preferred following the road instead ofthe panning. Gear was different then, the only helmet available was the ACU approved racing helmet, just a dome with a leather harness, I wore RAF MkVIII flying goggles as issued to fighter pilots during the war and wore a Barbour suit which was fully weather proof and quite warm with a woollen liner. There was no 'body armour' available at all I always found it a fun ride and quite easy too do, but then I also did a lot of sporting trials riding which was very technical 'off road' although not on the Ariel, rather a Francis Barnett 200cc Villiers 2 stroke engine bike with knobbly tyres and a high ground clearance

You had some great bikes for the time 👍. Agree clothing has moved on leaps and bounds from what it was. As mikerider says - "it's a road" no need to be a trials rider or motocrosser. The only danger is meeting someone on the bends but you only have to look ahead surely. I'm 76 years old and 5' 7" and been over several times on a Pan European. I could only just reach the floor with one foot ha ha.

As an ex motocross/trails rider l honestly can't see any difficulty riding along this road.

The local bus company has a excursion up those passes using a short wheel based single decker bus, its called the mountain goat.
