    A bit of a cycling dream ticked off - I did this climb today. It was certainly brutal! I had to get off the bike a few times. Massive respect to you for staying on. Now I'm going to watch this again to relive it.

    I have to say, I have always loved watching climbing videos on GCN or elsewhere but this is the best one I have ever seen. Your strength is awesome, physically but having watched your videos for quite a while now and knowing where you have come from, mentally you are amazing. You're truly inspiring. Brilliantly filmed also giving a true perspective on how hard that climb is. You should be giving talks in schools to inspire kids to achieve, as Paul Weller once said, "belief is all" and you certainly have shown that and I am sure you could inspire kids to achieve and keep them on the right track. Katie, that was awesome, well done.

    Many congratulations Katie. I attempted Hard Knott for the first time just two weeks ago and my sole goal was to simply get up it without stopping. I managed to pick a day that had a full on 30kph headwind whipping around but I had travelled from sheffield so had no choice but to crack on and despite that thankfully I achieved my goal. It felt awesome! Thanks for filming this it meant I could look at the views that I missed whilst I had my head down concentrating whilst blowing out of my backside! 😂 Next time you’re over my side of the Pennines try a nice steep climb called the Bradwell Beast. I usually do a loop out to pick that climb up then drop down in to Castleton then pick up Winnats and Mam Tor then back around through Edale. A lovely loop. Bradwell Beast is a little unknown but as good as Winnats. May be one for you to try. Happy to cycle around with you and your friends if you’re over. 👍

    My wife and I did this on our tandem about 20 years ago, when we were young and fit! We got about 3/4 of the way up and decided to stop in a little passing place on one of the really steep bits. Then a car pulled over to let us past and the people in it started clapping a cheering, so we had to carry on. :)
    Two advantages of doing it on a tandem. First, when one of you gets to that point where you just can't turn the pedals, and on a solo, you'd stall, on a tandem the other one pushes you through, even if its just a pedal stroke's worth or respite. Secondly, you don't have to worry about the front wheel lifting..
    Disadvantages. Its harder to zig zag. You have to be gentle and synchronised with gear changes or you can spin out the back wheel.
    Well done!

    • @KatieKookaburra
      @KatieKookaburra  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      On a TANDEM!!!!!!!???? Bloooooody hell Tim, that is bloody epic!! I would pay to see this. Well done!! :)

    • @marianneoelund2940
      @marianneoelund2940 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I remember trying to zig-zag our tandem up an 18% grade on a narrow road not too long ago, and it only took one zig and one zag before our front wheel went off the road!
      On Hardknott, I don't think it would be feasible for us even if we had the power and fitness, as my stoker only weighs 100 lb (45 Kg) and there may be no tires sticky enough to hold onto the steepest grades.

    Oh Man!! Fantastic! What an achievement. I am exhausted just watching the video! My quads are screaming and my lungs are on fire! 😁😁I can say that having seen this and a few other videos of Hardknott, there is NO WAY that I could get up there. It is just beyond my capabilities. The idea of doing it at the END of the Fred Whitton moves me to tears - and not in a good way. I had a similar experience with the Wall of Talla in the Scottish Borders. I got up it on my fifth attempt, having trained hard, lost weight and significantly upgraded my bike. I felt fantastic having achieved it, but it is obvious from the video that Hardknott is another level above Talla. Chapeau!

  • @tromBoyer
    @tromBoyer ปีที่แล้ว

    All of the videos I’ve watched showed the view up ahead, not really getting an idea of the gradient. It’s refreshing to get the “look what I just did” view that comes with looking backwards! Much better gradient perspective. Oh - and massive props for tackling the monster that is Hardknott!!

    Great job Katie. Amazing achievement. Only a year ago I would stop regularly on climbs that were just 12 - 15% and often walk part of it. I felt useless and nearly gave up cycling. It's stories like yours and other people like you that post videos to inspire us to keep going and take little steps to improve. So I found myself and kept trying and can do climbs without stopping now. I'm a much stronger cyclists now and have entered two future racing events that I'm currently training for. Your videos inspired me... So thank you, your awesome

    Cars waiting, amazing. I love the respect for bikers. We argue a lot in my country, drivers and bikers, about what we do on the road. What I always say is, almost every biker is a driver. If only every driver was a biker as well there would be no problem on the road whatsoever. And far fewer accidents.
    The video is amazing.

    Killer climb. Steep past the cattle grid. Brutal STEEP at the bottom on the zig zags. Gets a bit easier in the middle - so you can "rest" then the top zig zags.... oww. And that last ramp is amazing hard. Descent into Wrynose bottom is scary too - disk brakes IMHO a must. Wrynose ascent not quite as bad, but the descent from that is very steep and not recommended in anything other than totally dry conditions. You can do a great cycle circuit from Langdale via Elterwater and Little Langdale to Conniston. Then along the lake road A593 to Broughton. To Duddon Bridge and up just before the river to Ulpha. Hang a left and go up over the spectacular Austhwaite Brow (which has a nice coffee stop at the top of the climb) and drops you into Eskdale. Then back along the valley and up Hardknott, Wrynose and then the left turn at the bottom which takes you back up par Blea Tarn and the again spectacular drop back into Langdale.

    Brilliant effort! Best vid I've seen of someone climbing Hardknott...If you're ever in North Devon we have a little beastie out of Woolacombe called 'Challacombe Hill' you could try. It's about 1.2k long, there are 600 metres of it at a constant 20%...Brutal! 😆 We watched the Tour of Britain go up there a couple of years and even the pros were blowing out their arse! 😂 Best wishes...

      Ramona, just take it easy. My wife is suffering total amnesia of times (before this season) she wouldn't do more than 2 hours riding and hated any kind of climbs. She did a 180 km ride just 2 weeks ago and managed quite a few 15% graders this year. To me it is not as much about legs as it is about head. And the head needs getting used to things just like muscles.

    well done!!! ...quite impressive W/kg... and it's funny how different the roads are build compared to continental Europe. 2.2 km here is very short, would be more a hill - but it would be not nearly as steep! Here in Germany they would have build serpentines at the steep parts and then you would have may be 5 or 6 km but 15% or 16% max gradient. Also the scenery is different - looks much more "alpine" than it would at the same hight here...Nice video, and again, well done!

    Congratulations. ! We feel your pain while watching and your joy when you finish. Come to New England and ride the river valleys and mountains in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts and the nearby Green Mountains of Vermont and White Mountains of New Hampshire. Fabulous river valleys routes and rail trails with climbs through the beautiful little New England towns. I do them on a 30 gear recumbent Catrike and make all the climbs and I am 68 and riding seriously the last five years. Beautiful here now as the leaves are changing and temperature is perfect. Your ride is an inspiration and obviously quite painful ....but the joy of completion is boundless. Thanks for the great videos.

    Inspirational and amazing. Super well done. It was the only climb on the Fred I didn’t complete. As you approach the super steep switch back ramps near the end, you can see the angle of the road dramatically pitch up and that puts super fear and doubt in your mind, especially when you have already done so much continuous climbing over 10% beforehand and your legs are burning and you know cramp could strike at any time. As you said it’s so hard on the steep parts to keep traction and stop the front wheel from popping up.

    Excellent work! My folks live nearby, and I have a love-hate relationship with both this and neighbouring Wrynose. Did it five times this summer whilst staying up there (from the Cockley Beck side though - the cheat’s way up!) and spent most of the time praying nothing came down the other way - once you stop, it’s virtually impossible the start again! Cadence went to a laughably low 40s.
    Also, this is one of the few hills that descending is in no way enjoyable - all body weight back as far as possible, butt well over the rear wheel, and desperately trying not to have to use the front brake...

      Katie Kookaburra think of it as a shorter, sharper shock... you spend an inordinate amount of time trying not to wheelie.... It’s steeper over the distance, but quite a bit shorter. The Strava record is 6 mins 10 (I reckon motorists have driven up slower than that), with us mere mortals managing just under 11 mins. It’s pretty awful - you’ll love it!

Just discovered your videos - so good to get away from the macho commentary (yes GCN - that's you) and hear about the phsychological and emotional struggles - and the real joy of success - as well as the physical. This is a local climb for me and when I've done it in the Fred my entire focus for the ride is not to stop and get off on this climb. My challenges include being 90Kg+ when lean and fit.

    Crikey, that's a beast right there. And the hill ! Great vid showing the grit needed for serious hill climbing.

    I really enjoyed watching this, thank you. If you are ever in Devon there is a really good climb in a similar vein from Newbridge on the river Dart up and over to Dartmeet, with sections of 20% and 25%, it’s a real beast, you will love it.

    Amazing climb katie did you stay in 34 -40 gear for most of the climb or have you found as you have got stronger you dont use the lower gear as much,you do push out a lot of power

    Love this video. I done it 2 week ago, previously had to stop on newlands (1st big hill) then honistor (1st attempt) then kept watching this. So done loads of hills and tackles it and got up first time, your vid helped especially knowing where to recover. The last 1/3 is ridiculous!!! Loved it though
