I wish the world would have known more about mental illness back in 80s/90s imagine how different things could have played out for Daniel if he would have been born in a more modern time.. He was such an inspiration to me and helped me get my own mental illnesses in check and sorted. Rest In Power Daniel.
Things wouldn’t have changed. There’s actually more of a stigma placed on mental illnesses due to the school shootings that had happened in the past 20 years. It’s placed a stigma on mental illnesses and on gun owners. I have issues with mood swings and depression, but I’m terrified to get help because I’m afraid that people will think of me as some psychopath.
It was known..just in a way, not everyone was so willing to be identified by it compared to now. Just wanted to be seen as "normal" like everybody else. Also numbers of those affected by mental health issues have risen in society over the years. This has brought more awareness proportionately.
@Evan Hodge 30 years ago isn’t modern. Laws were different, ideals were different, and events that have forever changed the world have occurred within that time. Example: it was illegal until 2003 for those of the same sex to have sexual relationships or for anyone to have anal and oral sex. Back when this was happening we still had insane asylums, now Daniels only issue would be people thinking that he’s a school shooter for his illness which would likely cause worse issues. Things have changed, even 10 years ago isn’t modern especially 30 years.
There's one thing that the captions missed. I had to slow the video down and turn up the audio to make sure. At the very end after Daniel kisses her and says "I still love you Laurie," she says "Well I still love you too." In the Q & A prior to the screening of the film, Laurie said: "He never did anything that was upsetting to me. It was more flattering. He always made me feel good about myself. He never did anything but draw on my notebooks, follow me around and sing. And tell me he was going to be famous someday, so I saved everything that he ever drew on or gave to me." I like to think that this is a big reason why Daniel loved her. She didn't feel threatened by him or creeped out by him, or even if she did sometimes, she still saw him as a human being, and she cared about him and didn't ridicule or criminalize him for it. She must have seen him as innocent, like a child. And yet, she still took him seriously when he said he was going to be famous. She still treated him like an equal. So for anyone that says this is cringe or creepy, remember that you're not Laurie. And Daniel Johnston never would have written songs about you.

I think that if you piece together other documented statements by Daniel, this experience positively affected him. He later comments that "Laurie's taken. You've got to let her go." when speaking to his younger self, and then he says he did find true love in the end, in the fashion of looking back on happy memories being more potent than experiencing them to begin with.
I cried when she was sweet enough to hug him multiple times. He said it was the best day of his life. I don’t think he was exaggerating and after everything his music helped me through I realized how precious it was to see him happy. His heart was perfect though his mind had battles. God bless her for those hugs. The fact she hugged him multiple times hit me because I felt bad for him thinking he might be upset after she let go the first time, supposedly not to hug him again. She kept hugging him though. I can imagine his heart swelling with joy each time. RIP sweetheart ❤❤❤ Gonna get a tattoo in honor of you and your work

She was being very sweet to him, and didn't seem to want to lead him on. Especially when she saw he was still so infatuated with her. He tried to kiss her a couple of times, and she kissed him in the end, but it looked to me like she was getting a little concerned about the situation. I think she handed it all pretty well, considering it had the potential to go sideways at any minute. I'm glad they got to see each other again before he passed. Peace.

Honestly, I’m not sure how to feel about this. I’m a bit cynical that the crew wanted to create a happy ending on camera, foregoing that it’s kind of unfair to do that to someone who’s mentally ill, putting his muse right there where he’s pouring his heart out to someone we all know just cannot meet him there. Maybe it needed to happen at some point, but my gut when seeing this at the end of the documentary was that it felt out of bounds. If it were me, I would consult an expert in the psychological field before setting this scene up. If they did do that then I take everything back.
I'm from the same town as Daniel, Laurie, and Pete Arner. Daniel is even in my Mom's high school yearbook from Oak Glen High School! Laurie and Pete Arner are very normal and seemingly happy people. Pete still runs the Arner family funeral home with his brother, and they have always seemed like genuinely nice people.

Honestly, I’m not sure how to feel about this. I’m a bit cynical that the crew wanted to create a happy ending on camera, foregoing that it’s kind of unfair to do that to someone who’s mentally ill, putting his muse right there where he’s pouring his heart out to someone we all know just cannot meet him there. Maybe it needed to happen at some point, but my gut when seeing this at the end of the documentary was that it felt out of bounds. If it were me, I would consult an expert in the psychological field before setting this scene up. If they did do that then I take everything back.
I’m inclined to agree. Maybe the filmmakers thought it was a nice thing to do, or just wanted some footage, but in the end it’s just leading him on.

I'm from the same town as Daniel, Laurie, and Pete Arner. Daniel is even in my Mom's high school yearbook from Oak Glen High School! Laurie and Pete Arner are very normal and seemingly happy people. Pete still runs the Arner family funeral home with his brother, and they have always seemed like genuinely nice people.
