Actually....This was a satirical sendup of the tired Austin white boy blues scene. Blues peaked in the late 70's and by the mid 80's was eclipsed by punk and 'alternative' music. This video makes a point of being dull and plodding : Zombie music. The Rhythm Rats, while being well versed in blues, rock, country, etc., were also given to the kind of low rent humor employed here.

Strange. I've had two suggestions of persons wanting to obtain the originals this week. I've been trying to make as many available for free. There will eventually be several more, and some is in the movie. When the nukes go off it will all melt anyway.

Every tome I go back it's more congested, can't figure out who's living in all the condos. They've got light rail and have built a bunch of toll roads. Met Danial when he sat in on some improv workshops at the Comedy Workshop on Lavaca, mid 80's. It sparked his interest for a few weeks. Moved to Austin in 78 - MoPac wasn't even finished. Thru the 80's you could whip down it except at rush hours, which weren't much of anything.

Musically, this old school blues doesn't suit Daniel at all, but the video is just brilliant. "Go walk along the tracks, we'll clown around behind you." On paper that's nothing, but on camera they make it something. It's wonderful that this footage has survived.
Absolutely right about the song. At the time white boy blues bands were pretty played out in Austin and Daniel was spoofing those lazy dirges. This was the first time I met him and I normally worked w/ live music. I told him they had to be prepared because I didn't like half baked hippie pipe dreams. He showed up with a spiral notebook with every shot story boarded and the neighborhood scouted for locations. Then he came to the edit session in his McDonald's uniform and supervised every cut. The titles were written on McDonald's place mats.

I’m a huge fan of Daniel’s work. Does anyone have the tape of him running into the flock ducks? He described it as a religious experience for him and he’s drawn it. I forget where I heard him reference it. What of those trash bags of tapes in Danny’s garage? Is any of it worth looking into to you? What record is the real scrambled eggs? Yeah, pretty much. Daniel was a thorough and decisive director. He had a hand drawn cartoon storyboard, every shot was planned, and the locations scouted in advance. He watched every shot in the viewfinder before proceeding to the next scene, and was present throughout the editing process....dressed in his McDonald's uniform.
And, he could be like Hitler as well. I swear there were times he would tell me to use a shot that seemed like a very poor choice, and I knew he was watching to see if I would loyally obey his orders. I passed the test.....@@idkbroidkasdf
oh i love that you knew him. DJ is honestly a hero of mine. once a long time ago casper the friendly ghost came to me in a dream and told me everything is going to be all right. I'm an IRL poet and wrote a poem about it in my chapbook at the time and a decade later i've come to believe that was DJ due to some synchronistic things that are hard to explain. anyway i wish him all the best wherever he is, probably at carnavals, etc :) i really love him @@badlydrawnfrog
