Jacob Rees-Mogg on Partygate, abortion in British life and the cost of living crisis

  • Jacob Rees-Mogg says that he believes that the reaction to public figures breaking lockdown rules is disproportionate.
    The devout Roman Catholic also told Sky News' Beth Rigby that the number of abortions in the United Kingdom is "one of the saddest aspects of modern British life".
    On the cost of living crisis, he said that the government "is there when everything else is collapsing" and it "cannot leave people unable to pay their fuel bills."

    The number of food-bank services in the UK has risen from around fifty when they came to office to something over two thousand now - one 'business area' where the Tories have absolutely succeed in increasing activity. Also, was the reaction to Covid also disproportionate?

    • @donsullivano
      @donsullivano 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The tories seem also to have increased the number of food banks in Germany , Canada and many other countries. Perhaps there is a wider issue

    • @thewisestman1
      @thewisestman1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@donsullivano The standard 'get out of jail' card. When Labour are (occasionally) in power, everything that goes wrong is their fault; when the Tories are in power, it's down to "wider issues". The inequality gap is wider now than it's been for decades and still growing. It's not an issue of there not being enough wealth - just that what there is, is poorly distributed. It's a failure of capitalism. The Tories have been in power for what, twelve years now: there is no-one else to blame. Put simply, they've screwed the country and are now turning to socialist policies to save their skin.

    I am not a Jacob Rees-Mogg fan. But in this interview he almost got me. He comes off as sincere in his beliefs (even though I disagree with many of them), but at the very least he seemed a serious individual who is thoughtful about public service. UNTIL... he said we should ignore the partys at number 10. It was instantly revealed that the tory party is more important than the nation. The fact that he cannot understand the damaging symbolism of the leaders of a country acting as if they don't have to follow the laws that they themselves put in place. The whole event is damaging to the idea of democracy and the only way to fix that damage is for the leaders to feel the concequences and be kicked from office. Thats the only way to recover the important presedent that leaders follow their own rules and should infact be held to a higher ethical standard than others.
