    The very schism of Brexit, regrets at voting the wrong way, on both sides, frustration that it's all still going on. When will it end? Who knows? Maybe our very own Brexit odd couple, Alastair Campbell and Jacob Rees-Mogg, can tell us. We took them on a trip to Lewisham market in south-east London, to see if they could find peace over the delicacies on sale.

    There was NEVER a regulation on Bananas. There was one for cucumber for some time, on the request of the food industry, and it wasn't really happy when the EU decided to end the rule. But nobody ever had any concerns about how Bananas are bend. The cucumber thing was mostly about having one common standard.

    • @watermelon7998
      @watermelon7998 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The cucumber thing was also about the Polish producing and selling a type of gherkin (kwaszona, I think it's called) that was new in the EU, so prior to Poland joining, the Polish standards of kwaszona gherkins had to be added to EU standards (as in "what is a kwaszona gherkin"). I know because I'm Hungarian and we make them (kovászos), but only made them at home at the time, did ot sell them in shops in jars. You can still buy kwaszona gherkins in some British supermarkets and those EU standards are still in place in Poland.

      2016 was the second referendum. 1975 was the first referendum. Leavers didn't accept the overwhelming Remain vote. And, no, they didn't wait 41 years, as is often claimed. The Labour Party promised Brexit without even a second referendum in its 1983 general-manifesto manifesto. UKIP was founded in 1993. Leavers didn't respect democracy, and now they're telling Remainers to respect a narrow Leave win on the basis of lies.

    • @az-wr1lb
      @az-wr1lb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is this fantasy that brussels invents sh*t and imposes it on the EU member states. That banana law (along with all others) was proposed by an EU member head of state and the british representative voted to support it, hence it became law. What the smog has to say is irrelevant

    • @callummckenzie7540
      @callummckenzie7540 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. It was about different classes and qualities of bananas. It actually replaced a British regulation that was already in place. It was just another bit of fear mongering by the Leave campaign

  • @streaky81
    @streaky81 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Alistair Campbell like most remainers is wrong on the banana thing - not only was there a regulation (2257/94) of bananas, it graded them (via a technical note attached to the regulation) and then banned everything below a certain grade from import into the customs union - and one of the aspects to that regulation was the bend (there were actually elements in the regulation that were even more absurd than that). I don't know many times I've had people tell me I'm wrong on this and I'm sure people will do again here but here's my retort: if this didn't happen, how is it that when it was raised that the commission had to create a new regulation (1333/2011 - took 7 years by the way) undoing it all when shamed into doing so. It boggles my mind that we still have to listen to people who have held unelected high office claiming this wasn't a thing when it plainly was - and still is in the case of things that aren't bananas.
