    mariah’s overdubs simply come from unfair standards from her abusive ex husband(who was also the head of sony forcing mariah to be in his image, like a whitney houston type singer) and public scrutiny expecting her to make dramatic songs every year with nodules. i feel mariah’s story should be remembered and used to protect future singers expected to be perfect.

      She even called the house she shared with motola 'sing sing" cause she wasn't free and she was expected to be the perfect vocalist and a studio worm delivering( write/sing and produce) album after album ,hit after hit and then record new vocales for the remixes and that was a contract for 10 years straight. as fans we got the soundtrack of our life and even if the person is not a fan he/she can't deny that her catalogue is arguably the hardest in mainstream modern music,but she was pushed to the limit and the standard for her keeped being so high cause from day one the label dubed a lot of her performances and made them perfect even if they already were superhuman level , so even now in her 50 s the media still gives her hell if she messes up a live performance ,and even when she delivers you'll find people argue wether it was lipsynced/live or dubbed.....

    Lesage Singing, an old Mimi fan here. Been with her since 1990. Every single performance you analyzed was dubbed in post-production because it was a television special or a VHS product. She is a perfectionist, but I guarantee it is the result of whatever production company owns the rights to the performance.

    • @ArtbyKurtisEdwards
      @ArtbyKurtisEdwards 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In fact, the vast majority of 'live' Mimi performances on youtube, unless they are from a cellphone, are sourced from those old TV/DVD specials from the 90s. For instance, the undubbed vocals for Tokyo Dome have never been released... as it was only filmed to make a music video for 'Forever' and a concert VHS.

      I have a hard time believing you've been a fan since 1990. The 90's made for tv sessions aren't dubbed. They are specifically filmed like Unplugged. The artist sings the same song 2-3 times back to back and focuses on singing it differently each time to give the best of the best of their vocal ability. The different takes are mixed and matched to different degrees. It's a cut and paste of the performances that night, not dubbed.

    Fun fact: The song My All is actually an unfinished song. During the time she started writing My All she was inspired in Latin guitar because she went to Puerto Rico for vacations. Mariah Carey was overwhelmed at the time, she was divorcing her abusive ex husband Tommy Mottola who was the head of Columbia Records and te man that signed her in 1988 when she was backup singer of Brenda K star, Brenda always thought that Mariahs place was not as back up but as the star so she took her to a party they handed the demo to Mottola, when he was leaving he played it in his limo and immediately went back because he could not believe how talented she was. In 1998 she had to jump his authority and straight went to speak with the head of Sony music to find a way to finish her contract early. She managed to convince them but they asked for another studio album, a remixes album and Greatest hits album (thats why Rainbow was written in 6 months and released in 8 months after her last studio album. Going back to My All she had nailed 90% of the lyrics qnd had a melody she played in her h3ad and then sang the melody to her long collaborator Walter Affanasief so he worked Mariah rhythm into a mellow, tender piano ballad and he was going to help her finish the bridge in the song but because differences and Mottola's ego he was forbidden to work with Mariah so out of respect to his contributions she decided that instead of a lyrical bridge, she simply vocalize and harmonized with the backup singers before the climax. So maybe the whistle could've been added, we will simply never know the production Mariah had in mind

    1. She may have been forced to dub (Tommy Motorola wanted her to be unrealistically perfect). That made her highly critical of herself and in-turn turned her into a crazy perfectionist.
    You could see the joy of simply singing and experimenting with her voice (example SNL rehearsal or Who's loving you cover) go away slowly as time went on. She was focused on perfecting every note.
    2. Many of the dubbed often seem to be for audio quality control.
    Of course, sometimes she had too much rasp/voice crack/unsustained notes or w.e she wanted to fix.
    Take for instance:
    MSG 1995 (better undubbed imo)
    MTV Unplugged (Full undubbed concert is 99% the same--I watch it often)
    Divas Live
    Tattoo club debut (Undubbed is 😍. The rawness of the voice and slight imperfection gave it character--she uploaded the undubbed for MC30)
    Duet with Pavarotti
    These and a few others did not need it. I adore the imperfection in them and she still showcased incredible vocal prowess.
    People are always on her about it or question her talent. Like bro, there are a ton of incredible undubbed performances by Mariah, relax. Also, dubbed doesn't always mean the entire thing was fixed. Often times, it's minor parts, with most of the live audio staying the same.
    Plus, there are studio stems or a capellas that show her singing her face off (Emotions, one sweet day with just MC, Joy to the world, Outside, O holy Night, Hark! The herald, Anytime you need a Friend etc).

    As you said, Mariah is a notorious recording perfectionist. and for a singer who goes thru vocal acrobatics she may get some imperfections here and there, and she can't let them go published officially. Some of the dubs are just her creative choices or balancing the overall audio experience. What makes it ugly is today, she is so conscious, perfectionist yet lazy, she just sings live with tons of prerecorded tracks that she sounds miming all the time.

    MSG undubed is actually from a camera. From a personal View I prefer everytime her undubed Vocals. everytime she dubs or lip something is lost... The little imperfections are why we want live versions that gives the actual soul to the singing. if i wanted perfection and album version i would hear the studio version.. (Mariah seems to really hate when her vocals gets raspy but her natural tone/voice is really raspy cause of the nodules and its amazing to me. at divas live the big part when she sings "your body NEEEXT" the undubbed is more raspy but 10 times better cause the dubbed is strained and weird.) Hero is better undubbed with pavarotti.. the dub made so much tonal layers to vanish...at mtv unplugged her voice was really smooth and she has stayed that when her chest/full voice is really good and warmed up her whistles are not that strong/good that is the case here.... Hero from 2001 lost so much emotion at the dubbed its a shame... anyway For example soul singers are ALWAYS better at live performances.. From what I've learned from her is that, not only does she try to perfect the vocals and the audio quality to her standards, but she's also really specific in what she wants to hear in the overall sound of a performance similar to a song especially with the instrumentation. Though, there have been times where I've considered her dubs in some performances to be questionable, like her recorded show in Japan for her Butterfly World Tour (1998).
    There she basically used some undubbed and first take vocals from Madison Square Garden 1995 in two performances (Make It Happen and Vision Of Love). I've observed that she did these in post, therefore they're dubbed, not lipped, but I can't help but wonder why she would do such a thing. I believe it would've sounded fine if she just recorded a fresh dub for the DVD to keep consistency, but the fact that the vocals she took from MSG were the ones she covered up/dubbed initially for the DVD of that show is just odd. Still, her dubs are quite phenomenal on most occasions where she didn't take vocals from another performance, but I really like what she sounds without it, plus some work on the production part to make these vocals sound clearer and more audible.

      If you're looking for something to scratch that hate-boner you have, there's lots of other contents out there to satisfy you somewhere else. While I would like to admit, a lot of people in the fandom do tend to over exaggerate her skills, her making mistakes on stage shouldn't be used to discredit her as a masterful user of her talent.

    I MUCH prefer her undubbed vocals. MSG 1995 is the epitome of that for me, there's an element of her voice that is just.. lost in the dubbed vocals. While MSG 1995 is the greatest example of it for me, this is true across the board. There's this off, nasaly, fake sound to the dubbed vocals that always grinds my ears.

    We already knew she's been dubbing her live performances since Unplugged. Even Trey Lorenz sounded awful with the undubbed I'll be there. That is why she is no Whitney Houston when singing Live, I mean this is Mariah during her prime but she cant hit the notes that was created on the studio.

    • @jayray652
      @jayray652 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      First of all this isn't her prime, Her prime started in 94, Second she's a nervous live singer we all know that and she was forced to Dub which she didn't even want to do. Still that doesn't make Whitney a better singer

    1:45 why lie, it does sound VERY horrible and her team was always dubbing her perfomances to make her look better than what she actually is.
