Chris it would be great if you did a follow up video from this showing us how you set this on a ring. Any chance of that?

I actually got a couple of emerald cut stones to practice with a couple of days ago, the timing of this video couldn't be better!
Also you've made a lot of videos about how you make collets and claws and such, but you actually never show how you actually set the stones. I'd love to see a guide on that as well🙏

At the apprenticeship, I was taught to cut two octagonal settings that fit inside each other perfectly.

  • @bap20

Would you do a video explaining the second half of the setting process? 🤔
Also, I really liked that you gave measurements for the wire used - often the hardest thing as a complete newbie is working out what you need!

Thing is your job is going to different. Your stone size might be different, your stone might be different but that all plays into it. You know how hard you can push, you know how strong your hands are.
There might be minimums to ensure the piece lasts a lifetime but other than that it's all experience.

    • @bap20

@@eriksteenkamp5043 it's always good to get some idea of scale however. "A 12x10mm stone needs 2mm wire" is something I can commit to memory - from there it's just making small tweaks

Great technique for time when you don't have 3 mm sheet that you can pattern and cut. I typically use a drop of silver glue fasten my stone to the sheet scribe my lines and cut out the piece that I need. But this technique is still very useful and your videos greatly appreciated

My favorite tip about giving the stone a home: a plastic ringbox lid with plasticine clay in it.

Beautiful video, most important issues how you make the wire to make the bezel, it has a channel to fit the girdle?maybe you can make a video showing us how to make the wire with a groove. Thank you very much, great videos .

I hope I mentioned that chopped up ceiling tile is probably asbestos in the video where you were using that to hold work while soldering. In the usa, they have been made with asbestos for years, and pretty much every school and office building has asbestos ceiling tiles.

Hi diamond mounter really enjoying videos you are making by far the best on TH-cam. I have just brought a smiths little torch you tell us you are not keen on yours would you explain why please. I like mine but it’s a pain to light up can explain how you set yours up and what size head you use the most and what gas you are using. Keep making the great videos.

In the U.S. all you need to get propel soldering equipment is the money to buy it.

Or waiting till exam is finished to purchase the good stuff!! - Curious questions*

Do you know if this kind of setting would work on a flat stone in the same octagon shape? Or is it only for facetet stones?

can you elaborate on the needing of a license for a larger soldering setup? Are you not able to just buy a bigger torch where you are? If that's the smith little torch, or similar. There is a torch tip called the "Noswar Hornet Torch Tip" that would significantly upgrade the power of your current torch without changing anything else. It'll feel like an entirely new torch with it, especially if you use the larger diameter one. You can easily melt a 1/2" marble of borosilicate glass with it, which is way more heat than you need to solder. You could even do small castings with it.

hello, this is Cheick. I'd like to know how do we evaluate a picture of a diamond ring to be able give an estimate of how many grams of material is used, how many diamonds ( carat weight, clarity, color ) is in it?

If you turn the blade around soit cuts on the push ..for jobs like this when you're resting against the peg...the peg takes the brunt and just let the saw do the rest...your hands are merely holding the job in place.

@@DiamondMounter no worries...there are a number of jobs where its better to reverse the blade...cutting jump rings from a wire spiral is another example..
