    He executed the siu Nim Tao beautifully. There are many styles of Siu Nim Tao, he performed the original style. He Shorten it by skipping some parts but it was well done.

    As of the publishing of this video, Donnie Yen has been practicing Wing Chun for only about four to five years. And as his teacher, Ip Chun, has said, he's a pretty fast learner. And, jesus, you can see why he was cast to portray Ip Man. His hands move so goddamn fast.

    Wing Chun is essentially a refined woman's self defense class.
    How good anyone is in any art is dependent on the person, their teacher(s), their understanding of what they're learning, and their understanding of how and when to apply what they know.

    Sparring is a tool to teach you how to fight, more accurately, to hone the techniques you have learned, read incoming attacks but most importantly learn to spot flaws, repititions or patterns in your opposition. Sparring is fighting, but its like the diet coke of fighting. Fighting isn't always done in anger, war or self defense. Sometimes its used as a test of skill or for sharing techniques with the pain to show you how it feels before you do it to someone else. Glad I could teach you. :)

    I see your point, but wing chun teach to attack and defend at the same time. So whilst it generate less power than a boxing punch, it takes less power to defend against one. So it is to attack, but not to leave yourself open to attacks at the same time where they teach to guard your centerline. The leg triangle also functions like a wedge, where the harder they are punched, the harder it is to make them fall (given that they defend of course).

    One who excels as a warrior does not appear formidable;
    One who excels in fighting is never roused in anger;
    One who excels in defeating his enemy does not join issue;
    One who excels in employing others humbles himself before them.

  • @Jayfrin
    @Jayfrin 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are many many schools who practice weak/improper wing chun. The punch should never be in the shoulder, they give no power. Likewise movement is from the upper arm, powered by the body muscles like the lats, and the hips and waist and legs. This is harder because Wing Chun wants to keep a strong grounded base, however it can be done. If any teacher says you should just hit with only your shoulder immediately question that, it is encouraging you to be weak when you can be strong.

    the form is meant for practicing the movements and the flexibility of your wrist. comparing the Wing Chun practice movement to a real fight would be the same as saying doing push-ups and stretching your legs isn't effective. While both are ineffectice in a real fight, both are used to practice.

    Sparring is roughly 80% to the body, 60% to the head so you still get pain and impact as well as conditioning. The difference is only the amount of force used and the goal you are trying to reach. If you spar in the street in front of a cop, you will get arrested for fighting.

  • @Taka1HR
    @Taka1HR 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    what you mean is wing chun's power does not come from strength but the form, position and balance. Thats why he stands like that, that form has the three triangles. The legs, the body, and the arms. That is the way the creator of wing chun gains the upper hand against a fight with a man. So when a man uses wing chun, forms plus power... you do the math :D

If history is correct, this is what happened with the late Bruce Lee. ip man was not interested in teaching him. i was taught by Sifu Tam li and Sifu Paul Ma and the forms were done very slowly i never seen my Sifus rushing any part of the forms. this is why i commented...

  • @Jayfrin
    @Jayfrin 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a common problem with many wing chun practitioners, but a "proper" wing chun punch is very similar to a boxing punch and should be similar in power. This is because like boxing the power is generated from the feet and waist, using a turn of the body to propel the fist not just the arm. Anything less than this is not the fault of the style only the student or their Sifu.

    Again, Wing Chun is street survival. It's women's self defense. You "saw" how it works, but you don't know how it works. Unfortunately, many WC practitioners don't know how it works either.

  • @Taka1HR
    @Taka1HR 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, heheh It takes lots of practice and the rigidness comes from the discipline which doesn't allow the shoulder to be lifted up etc. to compliment the fighting style. Boxing also teaches to tuck your chin, lift your shoulders etc. right? so they are in someway the same. Its not fair for us to say one is better than the other. They are different fighting styles that has different disciplines and focusses on different aspect of fighting.

    In all actuality if Donnie could be in a tournament (specifically speaking the UFC) he would. He just doesn't because he has a recurring shoulder injury, which doesn't allow him to compete in leagues and tournaments etc. And sparring is fighting. It's just not to knockout. It's physical contact with punches, kicks, and whatever else you want to throw in there. It really doesn't look like you know what you're talking about after reading all of your comments. SOrry but I just had to vent on this 1

    Sparring doesnt even teach you to fight. It helps you build technique and cardio etc, but it cant teach you how to fight. The only way to learn how to fight is to fight. You cant learn to swim by getting on the floor.

    But He's not a Wing Chun practitionner, He only had 8 months training for the Ip Man movies and it's impressive how He nailed the role.

Being known as a fighter doesn't necessarily mean you're a good fighter, and not being known as a good fighter doesn't mean you're a bad one either. BTW, muscle memory is learned a lot of ways. A motorcycle rider learns it through experience on the seat, the driver behind the wheel. Do you know how they learn to be good riders and drivers? By riding and driving. Not by "practicing" on a video game. A guitarist learns by playing a guitar. A fire juggler learns by juggling fire.
    A fighter learns to fight by fighting.
    Its that simple.

  • @gambleyourhealth

    Im not saying he doesnt train. Im saying that he doesnt use his training in a practical way. You learn by doing, you cant learn to fight by training alone.
    One thing has remained constant in martial arts. To learn to fight you have to fight. Otherwise, you are just exercising.

    so why can't donnie be good? just because he's not in the ufc or some famous fighting ring doesn't mean he's not a good fighter. by the way if you noticed in my comments ive never been rude enough to call you an idiot. you can tell how good a fighter is by how polite he is as well.

    I remember seeing a picture of Donnie Yen demonstrating bong sau, and by God he was way off. Someone made a comment on his posture and for being off centered. thanks Neils i appreciate your response.
