I met Wong Shun Leung for 3 days shortly before he died in The Hague where he had this Wing Chun seminar and a Dutch-Chinese boy was translating for us. A long time ago that was somewhere in the 90-ies. I have the impression that Wong sometimes just didn't understand Bruce Lee. He told us that the "one inch punch" was actually a wing chun punch which I later found out not to be true. After leaving the wing chun school Bruce wanted to learn Tong Long (Praying Mantis) so we still don't know where this secret technique came from. I ordered a book from the US about the One Inch Punch and Three Inch Punch and the first chapter appeared to start with meditation. Well, when one of our classmates asked Wong if he did any meditation he answered _"Why? What do I need that for?"_ Meanwhile Bruce did meditate and do yoga and many other martial artists like Jet Li do meditation so why Wong didn't see any benefit in it I just still don't know. A funny anecdote: when we were allowed to ask Wong some questions my training partner asked him a very complicated question. It went a bit like _"If he does this and I do that but he does that when I'll be doing this while he does that so I can do this...."_ etc. I already saw Wong smile and shake his head and the translation that came back to us was _"You won't be having any time for these kind of fantasies"_ And when explaining a palm strike a girl asked him _"But isn't a fist just harder?"_ His reply was _"Says who?"_ and he was right, a palm strik is harder because you strike with the large bones close to your wrist instead of those 4 little knuckles in your fist that you might hurt yourself with. He was obviously really down to earth that man but he wasn't very spiritual though.
Dude, as a wing chun practitioner, the one inch, 2 inch, 3 inch punch, no matter how many inches, its very well train and practice in wing chun in almost every strike and technique. Wing chun range is a close range, so you have to be able to strike hard from a very close range, sometimes almost touching the opponent, so this is what a wing chun fighter end up developing, its close range punch. So zero inch, 1, 2, 3, etc punch is happening all the time in a chi sao session, a pung sao session Like it or not, its very likely that Bruce got it from there
@@ered8089 I was a wing chun student myself and yes, wing chun does specialise in close range and the strikes are short but never as short as that. @@megatafiq1568 I never said that you need meditation to become a great fighter or a martial artist. Only thing was that Wong didn't understand Bruce Lee's one inch punch. He claimed it was equal to a wing chun punch while it had nothing to do with wing chun. Bruce didn't stay with wing chun after 4 years and explored different avenues. However, you do need meditation in order to train the one inch punch because said punch is incredibly powerful and not 100% muscles power.

@@stevenyu875 right at what you said but this master was questioning bruce lee skills after he came back from US by creating JKD and ditching traditional WC but this master is defending traditional wC with bruce lee. so seems like no matter what bruce has improved his fighting skills, this master continues to look at bruce lee as a lower level than he himself.

This Chinese so called masters are alway in battle among the self, always putting each other down.
The Wing Chun system is a hybrid martial art. It's not traditional Kung Fu style. Bruce was taught mainly by his seniors even my old teacher Victor Kan Wah Chit helped him (currently the top Sifu in the world from IP Man's school) alive and still teaching in his 80's with his foundation work, Siu Nim Tau level etc, as he stated a few years 3 to 4 hours a day before Bruce joined Grand master IP Man school. Mainly later on WSL helped him Bruce advance but was not his teacher/Sifu but was his senior VT brother.. Never the less the knowledge came from IP Man's teaching. Victor told me once, Bruce was nothing special in the early days but once he came back from the USA he was very keen to learn and I think because he realised the value comparing to what he experience in America from other fighting systems he was learning very fast my teacher told me. WC-VT is a very condensed fighting system and knowing is not enough you have to apply it. This is the challenge! And as the old saying goes 'A master never blames his tools..
Is there a continuation of this video? a Part 2? And I would expect Bruce would "miss" some steps in wingchun due to the idea of Use whats useful & discard what is not useful ...... Perhaps a few steps he didnt feel were useful for him. Maybe Bruce modified that style & just used "some" of the art, what benefited Bruce perhaps. ..This is a great interview,I just wish there were more of it.,
I think you'll find he had holes in his knowledge that he wasn't even aware of, and Wong Shun Leung was able to point them out to him. You have to at least learn something before you can decide whether to discard it or not.
Missing a few steps was Wongs way of being very polite. Bruce barely had 1/5th of Wing Chun. There's literally tons of things Bruce didn't know and wasn't shown yet. All one needs to do is dedicate study to Wing Chun for 2 to 3 years and you already know more than Bruce. You can also read Bruce's books on his JKD philosophy and literally see he didn't know much at all.
I agree with both WingChun newbie and Brian McComas. I believe he created JKD as a frustrated WC practitioner trying to put it all together. He never completed the system.
@@TzionBarlev I forget how far he got in the system. I *think* he knew the 1st 2 hand forms. The WC system is complete on it's own, but Bruce had to go outside of it due to the circumstances in his life (that he unfortunately created).
@Tzion Talks It says alot for the system that Bruce was as good in the USA as he was - especially if what you say about him knowing only Siu Lim Tao is true. I totally believe that his WC big brothers could beat him, but I also believe that he was a good fighter. Master Wong had to have been better, and there are others in Yip Man's line who were also better. Yet and still, Master Wong and all the other of Ip Man's students did not make as significant of an impact here in the US as Bruce did. We wouldn't be having this convo without Bruce Lee's impact. He was a good fighter - not impervious, but a good fighter.
Hmm...i think "he missed some steps in the middle" does not mean he doesn't understand WC, perhaps figured it wasn't useful to himself. And it's really hard for him to fully teach his students the complete WC system, hence, the creation of JKD. He said it himself..." I cannot teach you, I can only show you the way, to find out yourself, express yourself, empty your mind, be formless, be shapeless, be like water....etc...that's the essence of jkd. People said he is selfish and don't really want to teach others what he knew, but you have to understand, he is uniquely gifted and hard for others to follow or have his ability. JKD is not a set of style or system, rather a concept, and its a concept for anyone that can grasp it, can expand their knowledge and evolve through ones martial arts skill and philosophy. In short, its a never ending, ever evolving fighting system. And he is the godfather of mma.
That's right, when he went to America, his mindset, his ability and fighting philosophy changed. He'd realized maybe what he learned is not really useful in a real world fighting scenario against bigger and stronger opponents. He read and studied a lot of other forms of fighting methods, and perhaps came to a conclusion that he had to adapt. He never stopped learning and changing.
@@calmwater2529 he said Bruce was at the top already. But he is taking some steps away preventing his students from reaching the top. It's not about how much Bruce knew, but how much Bruce was willing to teach. Like maybe he'll teach you to crawl and run but not walk. Thus missing a step. He knows how to walk but won't teach it to you. You gotta remember he is not teaching WC, he does not need to know all of WC.
I AGREE WITH HIM. PEOPLE THAT PRACTIE JEET KUNE DO, ARE MISSING A LOT OF FOUNDATION. THEY ARE INFATUATED WITH BRUCE LEE, AND THINK THEY CAN MIMICK HIM, AND HAVE HIS SKILL. NOT TRUE. THE CORE OF JEET KUNE DO IS WING CHUN. HOWEVER HE DEVELOPED CERTAIN ASPECTS OF IT TO A VERY HIGH LEVEL.

Longest weapon to the nearest target and the most direct and efficient route possible, that is Jeet Kune Do.” - Tommy Carruthers

Sifu Wong was a traditional Wing Chun practitioner who only believed in traditional forms and techniques. When Bruce Lee returned to Hong Kong Sifu Wong did not accept Bruce's JKD so they spared. Simply put, Sifu Wong was far too slow and weak for Bruce Lee. Bruce tried to share his JKD with Sifu Wong but Wong couldn't change his old fashion ways. Due to the fact that Sifu Wong was still Wing Chun's elder, he couldn't let himself be less than Bruce Lee. Too bad.

I dont want to be a smarta..., but i dont get it why ppl still write the name as "Wong Shun Leung" in 2021. This was the way the name was written 50 or 100 years ago, but not today anymore. Its either in kantonese Wong Shun-leung or Wong Shunleung, or in mandarin Huang Chunliang. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Shun-leung The Yale romanization has been overtaken by Hanyu Pinyin, which is more evolved and better understandable for western people. In chinese and korean the names basically consist of 3 single symbols, and they are written together without a space between them. If you translate them word to word it would be: WongShunLeung But this is not common in the west. But even Wong Shun Leung can be confusing since many ppl with think Shun is a middle name (like John Fitzgerald Kennedy), and the given name would only by Leung. Wong Shun-leung or Huang Chunliang shows clearly the 2 names Shun/Chun and Leung/Liang belong together which they do.

Bruce lee was the scientist of the martial arts, bruce had the calculating mind of the accountant and he had the agility and fighting spirit of the jungle cat
So I have pointed out the following things about Bruce Lee and i have been hated, attacked, and smeared for it. #1 Bruce Lee had very little Wing Chun kung fu knowledge. #2 Bruce Lee never went beyond his first form in level/rank. #3 Bruce lied about what Wing Chun is unable to do and incomplete in many of his claims and books. #4 JKD is born, based on a lie from the 3rd point. #5 Most of the things Bruce claimed that WC doesn't do, is done in the 2nd form and taught in the 2nd form. #6 Bruce Lee had 4 years max with Ip Man, and 18 months on and off with Wong Shun Leung. #7 Bruce actually was hated by the Wing Chun community because of his arrogance and how he mistreated both Wong and Ip Man. In this video you hear all of these points from Wong Shun Leung. So those who argued with me, are now arguing with Wong. Bruce was an actor, and very good at it. He acted and used manipulation on all of America. People think Bruce had all these fights, but in reality , he had none. The one with Jack was never public and those who saw it told stories very different from Bruce and his wife. Bruce was 130 pounds, 5.7 had only the first form of Wing Chun and was very arrogant and nasty to many Kung Fu brothers and sisters. He shouldn't be anyone's hero.
Bruce was only 130lbs towards the last year of so of his life. He also had a wing chun teacher in Seattle called fook yeung. You are spreading misinformation about him and there’s already enough of that. Stop it.
@@axelstone3131 The problem is this training with an alternate sifu in Seattle is hearsay. There's no evidence. Linda Lee, Taky Kimura (RIP), Jesse Glover (RIP) and many others during his Seattle days have never said anything about this Fook Yeung. Nor has Inosanto, Ted Wong, James Lee, Wong Shun Leung (RIP), William Cheung, Hawkins Cheung (RIP) or the many people who we all KNOW knew Bruce Lee well. If this had occurred would someone who knew him intimately or was trained by him not have mentioned it? The fact is that many unscrupulous martial artists came out of the woodwork after Lee's death claiming they knew him. It's all hearsay without hard proof or at least prominent friends and family of Lee verifying it. Also there are timeline issues with this claim that Lee trained wing chun with a Fook Yeung for 7 years (is what I think I heard). Lee had opened up his own Jun Fan Gung Fu Club by 1960. That's a year after he arrived in America. He was also actively studying philosophy at the University of Washington and dating Linda Emery which would have given him little time. Lee then uprooted his family and moved to Oakland by 1964. So how could he have trained for 7 years with this Fook Yeung? I'm not saying it's a lie. But it's not the truth either without some provenance or evidence. People making claims without evidence is nothing if there's no proof. So far Wong Sheung Leung's claim that Lee only trained for 1.5 years is the most accurate information we have about Lee's wing chun training. Now you can learn a lot of wing chun in 1.5 years because, everyone must remember, that wing chun was designed as a compressed, strip down system with minimum forms, and using drills and exercises to reach competency. Of course, you're not going to be a master in wing chun in 1.5 years but you'll certainly know the majority of techniques and maybe up to the 2nd form Chum Kiu and that is consistent with claims from William Cheung (or Wong Shun Leung -- can't remember which) citing that after Lee became famous that he offered to pay big bucks for private lessons to learn Biu Jee flying fingers form. Unsubstantiated stories of Lee is what is really killing his legacy. Let's stop with the hearsay and stick to the facts. Wong Shun Leung knew Lee, we all know that. Wong Shun Leung was Lee's direct instructor, we know that. That's provenance.
You call that debunking scientifically? I checked out every video you had and that was literally some of the most painful footage i've ever watched. @Smart Research Wing Chun you don't know the first thing about ving tsun do you. If you teach that rubbish, and people fall for it, you're likely to get someone hurt not only that but you're just adding to all the pointless wing chun that's on the internet. The thing with VT is that it takes a lot of work and has to be taught by someone who fully understands what's going and and why. It's evident that you know neither by the way you turn and the placement of your arms and hands. I urge you to continue but find someone who really understands it. What country are you in?
All traditional arts are built up in a gradual process. If u see all those wing chin practitioner challenging MMA fighter and was beaten badly, that was because wing chun is supposed to be a street fighting art. That means a fight may last a few seconds. Moreover, a real wing chin practitioner would take decades to perfect their art, so how could a so called wing chin practitioner win if he may just learn it 2 to 3 yrs on and off.MMA fighters are professional and they train every day.
Proof that Bruce didn't know anythiing beyond the first form, didn't have more than 2 years of Wing Chun, was argued against by his Sifu on his claims of JKD filling gaps he assumed Wing Chun did not fill, and his Sifu says he missed many steps in Kung Fu and was striving for the top. Bruce was great for the camera and a hype man and that's it. It was well known in China he couldn't spar or chi sao against ant of his brothers and sisters in Wing Chun without losing.

I never said that you need meditation to become a great fighter or a martial artist.

Bruce Lee didn't complete the 2nd form of wing chun. His footwork is from savate and fencing.
You cannot discard what you don't understand. He was gifted but not mature in Wing Chun. Thus the missed steps.
@@calmwater2529 You guys interpret it wrong! The missing steps refer to him teaching students not himself

That's why you see the wooden dummy or the 3 forms totally out of whack and self invented. These masters bragged about it knowing nothing. Wong Chun Leung..Chu Shong Tin and Moy Yat were the fortunate ones to see and learn Ip Man's wing chun through visual and talking wing chun.

Its either in kantonese Wong Shun-leung or Wong Shunleung, or in mandarin Huang Chunliang.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Shun-leung
The Yale romanization has been overtaken by Hanyu Pinyin, which is more evolved and better understandable for western people.
In chinese and korean the names basically consist of 3 single symbols, and they are written together without a space between them. If you translate them word to word it would be:
WongShunLeung
But this is not common in the west.

What illness.
Epilepsy is the illness he says Bruce Lee had as a kid. Wong Sifu first calls it 羊癲症, then gives the more common term 發羊吊.
Stop it.
Wing Chun is obsolete how many wing Chun people are in the UFC none, I seen one in the 90s he got pumped

th-cam.com/video/2nzHykS-r2M/w-d-xo.html
This mainstream Wing Chun has been debunked scientifically. Check out the videos on our channel.

@@robdarger852 you can say that again. painful to watch.
