    Thanks for the demo of these amazing flutes. I have the Aztec drone and it's a delightful challenge. It's my only flute that's gotten me shrieked at by a hawk. I'd like to think that's a good thing.

    This is so cool, I really respect what you and your channel are about. I love your humble energy and appreciate you in the community. I'm interested in ordering a drone flute soon! Would love to take it out on paddleboard trips and hikes.

    The people of Central America had such a rich culture of wind instruments. They have an instrument that mimics the sound of a Jaguar so well that it gave me chills. I recently learned the Nahuatl word for instruments that the Ocarina was based on: Huilacapitztli

    to me the tune you played sounded like a medieval tune - and now I want a flute like that

    • @JonOfNoTrades
      @JonOfNoTrades 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It actually makes a lot of sense why it sounds medieval. Religious music in medieval times didn't use any other notes besides the 'perfect' ones; 4ths, 5ths, and 8ths(Octaves). 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, and 7ths are either major or minor, not perfect. Old Gregorian chants, and the like, would only have harmony in parallel (meaning they move together) 4ths, 5ths, and 8ths. The first 2 flutes are a 5th drone and a 4th drone. You have a good ear!

      It's interesting that back in the day when we had an opportunity to set up at events, we used to set up at Renaissance festivals. We were some of the few if only (in most cases) Native Americans set up at those events. People would ask questions and say "how were you part of the Renaissance?" I would answer that we were around during that time as well, however our actual Renaissance happened much earlier! 🙂 We were of course the first people to come up with the number zero! 🤔

    Charlie is correct (as always) on the A frame flutes design not being from the Americas. The historical configuration was created by the Ancient Greek shepherds, which called the instrument "diaulos", meaning double flute. It was a popular motif to paint a shepherd playing one on both ancient and reproduction Greek pottery, which likely is where an enterprising Native Style flute maker found their inspiration and introduced it into the modern market. Great video as always.

    Charlie, I love this video. I have one of your small flutes that is a drone and I love it. There are some things we know and a lot of things we don’t. It’s good when you can share some of your knowledge with the rest of us. My grandmother was indigenous and was part of a tribe in Columbia. Her people were from the cauca Valley. They apparently were in the mountains outside of where Cali is situated now. I have some friends from Ecuador and they spoke of a flute called the dulzaina. I think that’s how it’s spelt but it is two tubes that are tied together from what I remember. Do you know anything about this instrument? I remember that it sounded like a pan pipe with just two tubes. Maybe two small quenas tied together? I have no idea but very few people play it now. Thanks again for this great video.

    • @Alfredel2
      @Alfredel2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope all of my spelling is correct. As you know, I use a dictation program because I can’t see. LOL

    • @davidmurphy6884
      @davidmurphy6884 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alfredel2, I'm not Charlie, but yes I have seen, and own, one of the flutes of which you speak. They are really just a tourist item, but consist of a Quena tied next to, but oriented in the opposite direction of a Pinkullu flute. I showed the double flute to many touring Andean music groups (I used to play in one), and all were amused by it, as it doesn't exist within the framework of traditional Andean music. But it is cool nonetheless. Also, there is an instrument called Pifilca which are wooden single-note panpipes which are played in ensembles with every one playing one note in a song. When notes have to be played in quick succession, or if a half tone is required for a song, some players have a couple pieces of totora Reed tied together to fill that role, as the wooden pfilca are commonly made in only whole tones. I hope that between those two examples that I hit upon the instrument that made the sound you remember. Happy flute playing, my friend.

    Would the 5th drone work with someone with smaller & stature? Not children hands, but I'm 5'1. Not a big guy. However, I love the sound of this flute.

    • @BlueBearFlutes
      @BlueBearFlutes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I absolutely love the sound of this one also. You can probably play it, however I recommend using my "does this flute fit my hands" video/printout and check the Low E flute as it is the bottom 3 fingerings and also the widest spread. If you can't find it, please let me know and I will send you a link. I also make a smaller version of this drone but it is higher in tone. bluebearflutes.com

    Do you have listed anywhere the distance from the mouth hole to the first hole for these? Also the diameter of the largest holes? I'm hoping to determine the largest my petite hands can reach comfortably.
