Music does not belong to one people. Music is the sound of love and should be shared with all 🖤. Keep sharing your videos and for any who wish to make or play a Native American style flute. Then go for it 🖤 Áho
I'm not a musician. I have made and played NA flutes based on your book and your TH-cam video guidance. Thank you for your tutelage. It is a great hobby and is fulfilling to craft a healing instrument from raw materials. My children and grandchildren now have flutes that are of your outreach. Thanks for the gift. God's Blessings to you and yours.
Charlie, I want to tell you something you already know. The reason I want to do that is because I want you to know that I know, and that I am not the only one. You have done more for Native Americans by your openness, your willingness to share, and your skill and talent than all the agencies in the world. As a mostly white guy living next to the Qualla Boundary with a Cherokee great-grandmother, sometimes I just want to hang on to a little bit of that. Not to make a profit, or to take it away from anybody else. Just to have a little of it for myself. So I make flutes once in a while. Like you taught me. Because you taught me, I will remember that tiny bit of where I came from a little better. You keep doing what you are doing. Sometimes I hear those beautiful haunting tones, and I look down, and it is my flute, made by my hands, out of invasive bamboo growing on my place, making my song. You made that possible. Thank you Charlie.
Don’t sell yourself short Charlie because there are some people that can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. After watching one of your earlier videos I knew that I had to try and build me a NA Flute. That was four years ago and after a few trial and errors, with help from you and a few others, I am now able to build some very nice playable flutes that I give to my family and friends. As for people that can’t understand it, if you were born here, by definition you are a Native American. Look it up. I am 74 years and counting. Whether you know it or not, you sir have taught me how to enjoy my golden years with my new found hobby, building Native American Flutes. Thank you very much for your expertise and generous teachings.
I just recently really fell in love with the soulful meditating sound of the Native American flute. I’m a woodworker and make many things but never thought of making flutes but when I stumbled upon Erik the flute makers TH-cam site and heard the Native American flute I absolutely fell in love thus my journey to learn the art of making my own personal flute as I’ve learned from woodworking each project takes a little bit of me as I pour myself into my work. I happened upon your channel in my search and I have to say you are an inspiration and it’s a joy to see that you go the extra mile to teach a craft that literally goes into a persons soul. Keep up the good work and please don’t bend to this crazy culture that is trying to destroy us as brothers and sisters! I ordered your book and I’ve devoured your many videos and I’m in the process of making my own personalized Native American flute. Please don’t stop! Stay strong humble and focused on your inner being:) to hell with the snobs!
I've had a Native American flute for a decade. I wanted to try making my own back then. Someone close to me told me that I know nothing about music so I couldn't possibly. I watched one of your videos a week ago. The next day I bought the materials to try making a tin whistle (what I have been learning lately) from copper. Getting that first pure bell note was an experience I will never forget. I've made a couple now, and while they aren't perfect, they are mine. I feel a much closer bond with the music. And I think the better understanding of the instrument has helped my playing. I still have a half finished attempt at a Native flute which I might try to finish now. Thank you for the information and positivity.
My daughter Jo, bought me your first book just before we contracted covid in December. We lost my father in law during this time. Sir, without the peace brought by my little imperfect flutes , I may have found it much harder to deal with. I make flutes that I like to play. They mean a great deal more to me than money spent on a book. I will buy a flute with my stimulus money just to see how close I measure up to you. Thanks for the fire .
Funny thing is, every craft seems to have these snobs. Luthrie is packed with them. I've been building string instruments for seven years. People always ask me if I went to school to learn what I do. It's like that with many hand crafts. They act like you can only be educated by a master or professor.
I,m not a Native American, But I have been following you for years now. I bought first Flute from you and I know it has helped me keep my hands working. Had I not watched your videos and listened to what you said. I am sure I would have lost the use of my right hand by now ( long story ). So I for one am grateful you do what you do and the way you do it. My thanks to you and yours.
When someone tells me I can't, that makes me want to prove them wrong. Thanks for what you do. It's because of your teachings that I can make and play a Native American flute. Thank you!
Thanks Charlie for putting it out there and talking so honestly about where you are coming from. I am just one of the many many people who's lives you have enriched with flute making and playing. Thank you for your kindness and generosity in sharing your experience and knowledge. There are many good and helpful people out there making and selling flutes amongst the many phoneys who are driven by greed and the need to feel important in a field in which they are basically trespassers.. Doesn't matter whether it is flutes, yoga, organic gardening etc every wonderful thing can get captured and tainted by selfish non-authentic people.
How honest and straight from the heart. I totally agree with your comments because all native instruments are felt throughout the body and not necessarily mechanical. So when you mentioned that you tune by ear I feel that you get the feeling from the material that the instrument is derived from and to tune it through mechanical means, takes away the heart of the instrument and how personal it feels. You can pick up an instrument and immediately know this is the one whether it be $5 or $2005, price does not determine the fit. What does determine the fit is how it feels.
Brother, all you share and have done in this community has resulted in enriched. I think in all musical community, there are people who considered their experience, above and more important than others. I think most that watch the material you put out, recognize your intention, to share and enhance the lives of others. Thanks brother and keep it up! Ricky
One of my favorite axioms is, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't....you're right!" I, too, am offended by a flute maker telling someone they can't and shouldn't try. I've made NAFs, native flutes, native American style flutes, etc. They are all end-blown fipple flutes. I don't particularly care for highly decorated or "shiny, polished" flutes. To me, it's what is expressed in the music created by the player that is important. There will always be people trying to set themselves up as experts or authorities on a subject(heavy sigh). You and your family have been and continue to be an inspiration to many, many people worldwide. Ignore the naysayers and self-promoters. Keep on keepin' on! We're listening and watching.
I live in the UK and have been following your TH-cam video's for some time. I also have your book. I am grateful for your dedication, philosophy and instruction. I've made a few flutes following your guidelines preferring to give them as gifts rather than sell them. My joy is in the making and successful tuning. My first one looks a bit rough but it plays well. In my humble opinion. Keep up the good work and pay little heed to those back biting people out there.
I don't own one of your flutes, nor ever played one. I just ran across your channel one day, and saw you doing something I'd done, many decades ago while I was out camping/fishing in the Rockies- Making a Flute from scratch, and showing OTHERS, how to do so. That is what made me "like"/"subscribe" to your channel, you reminded me of a NA friend of my from my youth. It was out there on that fishing trip, I found a piece of wood, and began whittling it, with nothing really in mind. I already played guitar at that time and had been thinking earlier that day how I wished I'd brought it with me- But backpacking trips don't really leave much room for such luxuries. I remembered how my friend told me how easy it was to create a flute, mentioned some of the aspects of it, and, being it was already past time for good fishing, I decided to try. My final product wasn't perfect, tuned well, polished, "designed", or covered in special feathers or hair- But it DID work, and didn't give me any splinters in my lip, so I was pretty happy. Later that night, alone by my campfire, when I pulled it out and began just blowing some notes? I was pretty damn proud of what I'd been able to do. And it made me feel as if there wasn't anything I couldn't do- if I just put the effort into it. It was a wonderful feeling, I'll never forget. I'm truly sorry that customer of yours will never get to experience this- and all because someone told them they couldn't. I can fully see where you're coming from, and why. And the person that told them that? Should be ashamed, the rest of their days, for stealing that incredible life-enhancing moment from that person, for whatever selfish reason they had. I had NO idea what I was doing- I've seen your teaching, it's fantastic, and can't imagine what I might have been able to create? If I'd of had that kind of guidance, the day I created my own source for music. Keep doing what you're doing- and as you said- Never give up. Those kind of people will always exist, and one day? Maybe that same person will return, once they realize something was stolen from them.
Charlie, I appreciate all your content more than words can say, there is no one out there so generous with their knowledge and expertise in this field. You are a special gift to all of us. From the bottom of my heart I thank you and your wife.
Thank you so very much for your kind words my friend! At times it can be disheartening when groups or people attack me and put me down the people like yourself make up for all of that!
Hey Charlie...I’ve always wanted to play a musical instrument. Watching your videos inspired me to pick up and play the Native American Flute. You are my Guru 🙏🏼 Thank you so much and I am sure there would be many like me who you have inspired. Charlie please ignore the negativity and keep doing what you are doing. More power to you 💪🏼
I wish we could chat on the phone. I have so much to say about your inspirational videos that I don't know where to start, so I'll just start from the beginning of my story and make it as short as I can. I sold my company in 2005 and found it was difficult to find full time work. No one wanted an ex-business owner. I spent my time searching my ancestry trying to find my Native American connection. I found it in 2013 and started to learn about my heritage as best as I could. The local tribe helped above and beyond anything I could have hoped. I don't have a piece of paper but I know where I come from. I started out making rawhide hand drums. At the time, I didn't even like flute music. I was sitting with some friends and saw a chunk of a cedar fence post that was half burned in the camp fire from the night before and got to looking at it. My friends had told me the story of Old Man Cedar so I was thinking, this was a living thing that was cut down and used as a fence post only to windup as firewood after it was to old to stand. I got to thinking, what could I do with this ugly old piece of wood to give it a new life? I have never carved anything in my life so I figured that was out of the question. I went online and just randomly searched native crafts to see if there was something I could do. One of the first things that came up was a guy that made Native American flutes. I'll give you ONE guess as to who's TH-cam video came up! Okay, I can't carve, I can't play, and I don't like flute music. SO, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! I took that ugly burnt piece of cedar and made it into a flute, giving it a voice to sing of it's gratitude. I've never done it before, don't know how to play it, but it's voice was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard and couldn't believe I was the one playing it when I played back the recording. You got me hooked! I have made a short log of all the flutes that I have made on my TH-cam channel because all the flutes I have made have been gifted to someone. I don't sell my flutes. I only have two that I have made that will not be sold or gifted. One is so ugly I love it, and the other is the inspiration for the Oral Traditional Story I created called, The Wisdom of The Ugly Flute. Thus the name White Wolf's Ugly Flutes. All of my flutes were made from scrap or rejected wood. This is a short video of one of the very first flutes I made back in 2013 without any fancy tools and vary little clue of what I was doing. th-cam.com/video/h4A6Rk5_FzU/w-d-xo.html Sorry about this being so long but there was a lot more I wanted to write. Just keep doing what you are doing! We got your 6!
I had something inside me, that motivated me to make flutes, from the early age of 10. My only guide, was looking at what was on tv, and in the stores. I made the easiest kind I could, side blow, from the materials I had around me. Bamboo, and plastic pipe, using the only tool I had, a pocket knife. It was 1970, and there was no internet to learn from. But I had fun, and in time learned more about how different wind instruments are made, and what affects the way they sound. I wish I had your TH-cam channel back then. Thanks for doing what you do.
Omg! Oh small and sad of a human being is one that tells another not to even try. Charlie keep doing what you do. I wish much continued success both with the business and your message of sharing.
I play one of your drone flutes in A, it sounds fantastic. I also bought a kit from you also great. Ignore the small minded people and keep making flutes🙂👍
I love your videos and openness with sharing information. That was the reason I bought my first flute from you, a piece that I know will be created with love and integrity.
Charlie, I just started following you in the past few months but short and to the point you are the inspiration to all I see what you do and how it’s from the heart for others keep it going man ! There’s not many like you that spread the love . Hope to see you for many many years to come!
Many many years ago I bought 2 Cane flutes from you. I'm grey now. I bought from you because you spoke in truth and were true to yourself and what you were doing. From the moment I took them out of the the packaging ( I live across the pond), they had a soul, that sang to to me. I have bought 2 other flutes, much more expensive to. They were not created in spirit. When I wanted to share with the river and the trees their joy, the creation. When I go into our forests, when I sit by the river, your flutes sing. They did from day one. They have rebirthed my soul ( and many others that have shared their songs with me). You honour your ancestry. You are true to yourself. I am happy to see you are still sharing truth. Much love and respect for you Charlie Blue Bear ( and your family.).
I think it is amazing the sound that can come from a piece of cane with holes drilled in it. I want to make a flute for daughter in law. She is a singer and song writer. She is very talented... I just need to get off my behind and build one. I know I have said this before.... thank you sharing.
Hello in there, Charlie... I want to note that I am very grateful to you.. I stumbled upon your videos several years ago, watched them, and bought your book and a flute kit and the hole burning rod... I was simultaneously receiving free guidance from various flute-makers, both native and non-native, on various forums and later on FB, who, like you, simply wish to share their love of this instrument with others. It is a very special instrument, Charlie, which allows people like myself to join the ranks of 'musician', however modest their playing, but, even more, it offers us the greatest blessing of being able to express ourselves.. Having crafted what was a very decent little kit flute, I wanted to share my love of the NAF with strangers we'd meet as we travelled through various countries in 2018.. I asked if I could order another 5 kit flutes in a bit of a rush, and when you heard that I wanted to craft them so that I could gift them to people we met along that way you generously gave me a discount on what were already really affordable kits. Your generosity made it possible for me to introduce 5 people to this instrument in places as remote as Mongolia, and people beamed with gratitude and joy when they received their treasures. My hubby was watching me as I fluted in the family Ger of a Mongolian Eagle Hunter.. He had played his traditional horse-hair instrument, the morin khuur,, and sung to us, and then asked me to play the flute. I flute with my eyes closed, and when I opened them at the end of playing my hubby pointed discreetly at our hosts' niece, and said "her eyes have been riveted to you the whole time" and that little 10 year old was still staring at me, as though I'd created magic.. Even though they were a nomadic extended family, so possessions were light on, they treasured music, as witnessed by a gifted uke hanging on their 'walls'. That family were teh recipients of one of your flutes, and I'm certain at least some of them will be playing the flute as they travel.. ......... ......... I have seen you smile in every video of your's that I've watched over the years and the tension that you were feeling in this video is clear. I'm sorry that you bear the brunt of some maker's disgruntlement. I truly hope that heaviness has cleared since you made this video. .. My heart is grateful to you and other NAF makers who understand people's genuine desire to play this instrument and later to share their own flute-making skills with others. I have made a small number of flutes now, mostly from driftwood that is precious to me, and mostly using the simplest tools (no power tools yet), and I've even taught two 'annual camping friends' the basics while I was working on my own little camping table, and their faces beaming when their first notes arise is pure joy... This instrument has honestly changed my life, added a whole other layer, and I will always be grateful to those who shared their skills so generously with me without thought of personal gain, simply because they realised what a gift that knowledge is. Thank you! 🙏❤🙏
Wow I have watched several videos and find you to be real and kind. I have not received my flute yet just ordered it the other day you are appreciated and so blessed, thank you for being you..
Thanks for your order and for watching our vidwos. In case you need our shipping info, here's the page: bluebearflutes.com/shipping Please be sure to subscribe and share our videos also!
Charlie, your generosity is an inspiration and a blessing for all. I love it that you are so passionate about defending your customer’s ability to enjoy what life offers. ❤️❤️ this is a beautiful video.
Anything....anything done in truly the right spirit is a blessing to the world. Anything done for just selfish material gain, greed, personal pride and power and control is a part of the problem we are now having to deal with in every aspect of our "world" society.. It seems people need to start looking within themselves and be honest about their motives. Thank you Charlie for stepping out and making this video to explain your own thoughts and to hopefully offer something for others to think about. You are coming from your heart and that's what we need now more than ever. When the heart is lost, life becomes a tangled web for sure. It's time we got back to this basic truth and stop wasting time nit picking and tearing others down. Life is too short. And considering the state our world is in now....do we really want to continue down that road? Whether we want to admit it or not, we are all on the same ship, and when it goes down, we're all in it together whether we like it or not. . At least that's my own feeling about this. May everyone find their heart's music and play it loudly !
Thank you for sharing your heart about this. About "getting too big for your britches"! When I get interested in something, I want to understand how it works. I heard a Native American Flute played by a hiker in TN and was mesmerized. I researched, tried to understand what I should be mindful of when I bought one. And stumbled onto a TH-cam about making one from PVC. What better way to understand the mechanics, the history, and to be part of that history. Mine is a G flute, is in tune, and I'm very proud of it. It plays very quiet and overblows easily which makes it my choice for travel. I can entertain myself instead of having its voice carry. (Music is not a well defined skill- better to be unobtrusive.). I've appreciated your videos and I'm sure you know that the voice that is negative is often noticed. May this video give us all the courage to speak out!
Charlie, You are in control of you, not every one else. Self respect is something many people do not have and are swayed by other people too often that are only interested in the control of others for what ever reason, for money ............. You are a great person, you are doing for the right reason. Thank you. Tom
I greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge, I'm retired and have lung problems, I made my first flute watching your videos and playing it I feel like it has helped strengthen my lungs, Thank You very much
The backstory you have shared at 7:23 is a story I read and understood (as a non native american just passionate about its culture and tradition) as an oral tradition that's been passed down on the origin of the native american flute amidst the many many stories passed down by oral tradition. I won't say I will distrust the way that maker found their inspiration but I wish people who tell these stories understood these stories, if not disclaimed can take away the traditional flute history from its amazing creators for these makers personal gain. Thank you for being you.
I really appreciate your instructional videos and now my children do too. I don't get much time with them but today we made some 4 hole whistles and a 5 hole flute and they love them and it gave us something to do together. That's a priceless gift that you have given me and I have to thank you very much for that. So thank you Charlie for going so in depth on your videos. Keep doing you because it's awesome to see someone say "Hey you can you this just like this. I sell these but you can make one yourself." Great job being a good human. Love it
Charlie, your channel found me at the beginning of the week. The video on making flutes from bamboo torches inspired me to give it a try. I've never played a flute before, but I had tools enough and a bamboo supply. For 3 straight nights, I have gone to work on making flutes, and it's been 3 of the most relaxing nights I've had in a very long time. Even when the first flute didn't turn out great, I came back the next night and made a better sounding flute the next. I came back to make an even better one on the third night, but the flute I created made no sound. I didn't fail, because I learned more lessons from making the one that doesn't make sound than either of the previous flutes. If anyone ever tells you the don't have the tools, direct them to that video. I think that in that video you show how little tools you have to have in order to make a flute.
You are awesome! Thank you my brother. I made my first flute last week and gave it away the same day. The recipient was overjoyed. I plan to make many more. I still can't believe I'm making flutes... but I am. Love you my brother!
Thank you, Charlie! I agree too, that we follow our ❤ You like shiny? Get shiny! You like natural, simple? Go there! Want to make your own? Go for it! No judgements either way...
This problem, is reflected in many disciplines. It is an unfortunate part of human nature. Actually two parts of human nature. 1) the desire to be special, unique, to stand apart from, and above others. 2) The desire to make personal gain, monetary, social, etc. from that. It is sad, that some people, in the both categories, will do/say bad/mean/untrue things, to discourage anyone who challenges that way of thinking. I think it can be hard, to chose when it is best to expose this problem, and when it is best not to interfere with peoples livelihood, and peoples need to feel special. I think you have done a wonderful job, of addressing this problem, in the nicest way possible. As a person who plays a wide variety of sound making things, on a limited budget, I learned early on, how to separate the quality of a thing, from the hype. I learned that in some cases, I can make my own, without spending more that it would cost, to buy a better version of the same thing. And that there is a value to making something, beyond just saving money. I learned how to find good information about, what makes things sound different, and how those differences would affect my enjoyment of that thing. I accept that the qualities that I like, are not always the qualities, that others prefer. I accept that making mistakes, and not getting the best for me on the first try, is part of the journey. I accept the fact that sometimes I must compromise between what I would like, and what I can afford. I have learned that, what once pleased me, may no longer do so, and that what I did not like in the past, may now be what I like. To the best of my ability, I share what I have learned, knowing that my advice might steer someone, in a direction, that is not right for them. I hope you have a wonderful day. I appreciate what you do, the knowledge that you share, your desire to bring joy to our world, and I wish you continuing success and happiness in your life.
I had something similar happen to me. About ten years ago I started making wood stripped kayaks. At the time, almost everyone building in a traditional all wood material handcrafted. I decided to build a wood strip kayak but with some components to add strength, save weight ando save by my back., I use light carbon fiber for cockpit, and factory seat, and a factory skeg.. In posting to the kayak fórum of my progress, I received criticism for not using all wood construction. Today, I see it common to mix the new methods with the old,,, thks for video,,, I am now ready to learn flute making...
Let me say this and it comes from the heart. You and your wife are amazing and in so many ways you have enriched the lives of so many people. Something I admire in a person is their genuine ability to teach and bring so much enthusiasm to those learning. Stay true to yourself and know you have a lot of friends who appreciate you and your wife.
Charlie, thank you, I have encountered this in many “circles” it amazes me the snobbery of people. Keep making these beautiful instruments. I would say keep making those tuned to themselves as well, the Pentatonic tuning has been late coming as you well know. Love your videos and your insights.
I just ordered the little people flute simply because I wanted something I could play, as a musician, that honored the story of the Cherokee Little people. I deeply appreciate the value of your work.
I love my tiki torch flute, that I learned to make from Charlie's video. The hubs is amazed that a piece of bamboo can sound this good! I'm learning to play it while waiting for my Blue Bear flute order to come in. That poor dude just needs to take a deep breath, and build his flute kit, instead of sending it back. He will be delighted about the results... And probably disappointed that he has spent so much money on other flutes, but he will be enlightened. Divine intervention led me toward playing the flute one day. Blue Bear flutes was the first website that popped up on my phone. I watched one Charlie video, then read a bit on the website, and knew this was the place to get a flute. Very practical and unpretentious. Flutes based on historical examples. 5 holes. Thank you, Charlie. 🌿
Thank you for the inspiring words Charlie. Not sure what you call my personality type but whenever someone tries to tell me "I can't" it makes me want to try even more.
If we had to wait for a handful of flute makers to try to make a flute for thousands of people wanting to buy one, there would be a long waiting list for 4 years before you could get to the front of the line to finally get yours. THANK YOU. FOR HELPING OTHERS!❤🥰
A man of spirit; a man after my own heart! With you all the way on this Charlie. I believe a gift not joyfully shared is a gift not gratefully received. Arohanui from Aotearoa/New Zealand, Kia Kaha ehoa.
Charlie what a great talk! ;) You have taught me how to make Native American Flutes and I'm not Native American, and I'm not a woodworking kind of person. But I found some bamboo growing in Connecticut (go figure) and have made half a dozen of flutes, and still have more material that I can use. Keep up the good work and the good fight! Thank you so much for everything you and your family do! Have a good week, take care and stay safe my friend! :) #Heart
Dear Charlie I have been following your channel for a while now and thanks to you I have been able to make my own flute from local bamboo. In fact I have made 3, and although they are not perfect I have followed your instructions carefully and managed to make one in key of A and two in key of B in different diameters😅 I am 64 years old and live in Zimbabwe. One of these days when it is possible, I am going to buy a flute from you. For me, It is who YOU are that sells your flutes😊
I am not making an excuse for the "flute maker", but in an attempt at understanding motive I try and remember that many people have been crushed by the Covid-19 pandemic's affect on the economy and some folks are in a position that have them struggling to survive. So I keep them in prayer. My first NA Style flute was made from bamboo and cost me $35. My current flute cost me $235, but a large portion of that was actually a donation to the tribe fighting for federal recognition. They are simple and I have always respected your stance on sharing your knowledge. I pray for abundant blessings to fall upon you Brother.
I am new to music coming up on 2 years at 72 . I love fine craftmanship . I build box string instruments . I am told over and over again that I can not do this or that . It is not the way it was done 100 years ago . Stay strong , I like your TH-cam videos . I have 2 of your kits but have not worked with them yet . Keep sharing your knowledge , there is no better gift to give . 😁👍
Hey, thanks so much! We have a livestream set for November 27th at 6pm central time where I'll be building one of our flute kits from scratch if you want to attend!
Hi Charlie , I love your honesty , your heart and I just want you to know that when I get my new flute that I ordered from you it will be an exciting day , and if I would have known about Blue Bear flutes just a month sooner I would not have bought any other flute , you have honesty and integrity, I know I’m getting an awesome flute . Thank you so much for all you do , I love your videos .
Thank you my friend for your kind words and for your purchase. Don't fret, I'm sure the other flutes you ordered our fantastic as well! I will very much look forward to hearing from you once you receive this one!
A couple of months ago I got an Irish penny whistle and I like it a lot. But I love the sound of the Native American flute. It's a perfect way to handle my anxiety. It's impossible to freak out when you are focused on breath and fingering, pace and tone.
Hi Charlie, You are one of the most equitable people I've ever purchased anything from. The amp is still working great. The person you're referring to can teach us all a valuable lesson. The lesson is to learn the sound of Iktomi's voice. Thanks for being the man of conviction and principle that you are. Until next time
My Brother, There's always going to be opposition when you're doing something great. Rise above jealous criticism and stand tall knowing you're making a positive impact in the lives of others. You've inspired me to make flutes. And now I'm attempting other instruments. I wouldn't have been inspired to do so without your videos. Thank you!
Wow Charlie that is a powerful message and for what it is worth I totally agree. I have come across so much snobbery to do with musical instruments it is very sad. Keep up the good work.
Fucking A bro. I looked at 100,s of flute makers, but you impressed me the most. You have a deep down passion for what you do and so today I ordered my 1st flute from you. Can't wait to get it. Malc (United Kingdom).
I've often wondered about the reaction you get from others who guard their secrets carefully. Really disheartening to hear how resentful some can be about sharing knowledge. You're THE best (and often only) resource for producing a high-quality Native American flute from beginning to end. I've read and viewed other sources. They are often incomplete at best or downright incorrect. Currently, I am researching side-blown Asian flutes and am struggling to find comprehensive information aside from documentation from archeological findings. Thank you Charlie Mato-Toyela, I really doubt I would found this wonderful creative outlet without your videos!
@@BlueBearFlutes I can't tell you how much I appreciate your offer! I was able to get a functional side-blown/transverse(?) working last night. Difficult to play, likely a combination of less than ideal design and technique on my part. I will send an e-mail with the layout of the template I'm trying to re-create as soon as I've done a few more tests and refined the document. Thank you so much Charlie Mato-Toyela!
I enjoy your video's. To be dedicated to your heritage, but not excluding those with different heritage shows where your heart is. Keep it up, and the sounds of your flutes are great.
Thank you sir. I have had to fight for all of my knowledge most people don't want to give it up that like if I know what they know I'm going to take out of their pocket I don't understand that I thought knowledge was to be passed down thank you for sharing
I believe in you, Charlie. You helped me get started on my own flute making journey. I really appreciate what you have done to introduce so many people to enjoy making and playing this wonderful instrument.
I have learned soooooo much from you and your videos. It has become so rewarding and satisfying to make my own flutes. I thank you for passing on your knowledge. Knowledge will die if not passed on. You have helped it to continue long after you pass on. That is wonderful. Thank you
I am honored to be a customer of yours, but more importantly, I am honored by the MAN you are! Your Integrity is TOP NOTCH and I respect you and your entire family! Play on Brother....Play on!!!
Knowledge is power. How you use that power defines the kind of person you are. To the potential customer that cancelled their order: I feel sad for you. You let someone convince you that you couldn't do something without even attempting to achieve it. You obviously have the desire to make a flute or you would not have ordered in the first place. Please reconsider. When I was not even old enough to read or write I would sing. Nobody told me I couldn't sing because I could not read words or music. I just DID it! Guess what. I never learned to read music, but I sang in a professional choir, I play the guitar, banjo, dulcimer and NA flute! Charlie: Thank you! This touched me on so many levels. I have literally watched and re-watched this. I have been sitting here for 3 hours thinking. There are so many things I want to say. Thank you for being who you are. Many Blessings to you and your family.
Great job Charlie. Thanks for all you do. My father, who was also a wise man always told me, "My son, never tell your enemy where your goat is tied out. They will be sure to go get it" lol. Keep on keeping on my friend!
Charlie, I very much respect what you say. I started viewing yr videos a few years ago when I was discovering these flutes. You asked me to send you some photos to your website (I had a question) but I couldn't figure out how to attach photos to the website, so I sent via email to you, if you get time and if you're so inclined . No pressure, no rush, no expectation. Thank you for your video!
We do get a little bit behind sometimes in the shop! This includes emails! It looks like those two flutes will need a complete revamp on the track area and sound hole. It looks as if the flutemaker had done it once already. I'll email you with suggestions.
Loved this! I also come from the "I CAN" group. I work with kids with learning disabilities and much of what I do is teaching them how to compensate for their weak areas, so that they CAN do whatever they wish. So many have given up by the time they reach me. It's wonderful to see their attitudes turn around. I have two of your lovely flutes and enjoy them both.
Keep doing you! The value in a flute, or any device that enables us to express ourselves, is in how you relate to it, and the attitude of the person making it. If a person makes their own, they really 'own' it. You create through your passion, and you help create that drive in others. That's how the world becomes a better place. BTW, you inspired me to create a PVC flute in E4. Halfway through it now. I like trusting my hands. I used to make my living for a while as a pipe maker (briar pipes), and as a visual artist. It was always satisfying to help bring creativity out in others.
It's osmehow silly but serious, what I want to say. But this happened when asian martial arts begun to open the white man. Even in the 60 or 70s many asians resisted treaching to white people, and the few that did usually were outcasted by their own communities. There are arts and artists that bring their crafts to the world and thanks to them their arts didn't disappear and even grew. Love you art, love you, you are humble but a real master.
🙏🏼🙂🙏🏼 Thank you my friend! Recently, someone accused me of not doing that and keeping my culture to my self as well as being closed-minded! It's nice to hear that not everyone believes the way he does!
I have one of your drones and love it! Fascinated with your flute making videos, too. I have your book but am a bit clumsy so am waiting for help from someone better at handling tools.
This video is inspiring me to order a kit. In my heart I believe that music is a direct line to the Creator, a form of prayer regardless of your ethnicity or religion. Music needs to be accessible to everyone and Charlie makes that possible.
I appreciate you As a member of the human circle As a member of the woman circle As a member of the thinking class and the BOC As a resident of turtle island As an indigenous person and fellow conductor of electricity I appreciate you I see you You are a leader of men You lead by teaching by showing skills as well as by showing those of the new old way (by example) how to live true to their selves by following their heart. Its a lost art...almost I appreciate you
Charlie, let me be your own personal "spy" and say this from a third party perspective. I started with you and am sending my second batch of thankyou gifts to you I promised, ASAP, because of what you brought into my life, beginning with TH-cam and then your book, starting this amazing adventure. But I am also good friends with numerous key players at the Native American Flute (and Native American style flute) Makers' Forum on Facebook (where people inevitably butt heads on opinions) with Hawk Henries, Jon Norris, Mike Prairie, Edward Kort, etc. Not only would no one speak poorly of you openly (when given many chances by new folks showing up telling us how wonderful your influence is to them, me included), but a couple folks with differing opinions simply shrug and very privately say they have differences in opinions about history or making with you. That's all. It's usually along with a "he doesn't choose to be a part of this community" comment. And I get that -- I found contrary snobs I simply didn't have time and energy for in tarantula breeding, bow making, amateur radio, banjo, you name it. But I have to say out of all of it -- the makers on FB (as much as I distain FB) are the most open, sharing, and non-secretive about every last drop of arcane knowledge I've ever witnessed. Totally unlike any other craft full of people not wanting their trade secrets stolen. Totally the opposite, almost to a point of endanering their own businesses. And they all say the same thing. Demand grows steadily and very few people stick with making quality flutes for long enough, and in enough quantity, to make any difference in their livelihoods from them sharing their trade secrets. Most of it just winds up helping starry-eyed people make their own, better flutes, or sell a few and move on (largely, on average). The stuff that hurts more is the giant mechanized machines spitting them out by the thousand, and sharing craftmanship skills isn't going to change CNC programmers and machinists impact. Just MHO, my friend who started me down the greatest adventure of my life, Charlie. P.S. I did have one person disuade me from making until I'd been playing for some time, in order "to know how to voice the flute as it deserves", but influences like yours and, honestly, the Makers' Forum, too, made me keep on going. Yes I do feel I make a better flute now than last August, but I made nice flutes pretty quickly, based on your tutorials. One of whick I came back here to check... we love ya man
Thank you for the videos and teaching us. I learned so much from you and love all the products I bought from you. They are made with love and passion and you can tell when We play them. Big business only looking for more and more money. Support small businesses , people and products are so much better. Keep doing what you doing , there many of us fully behind you and believe the same values
I am new to your channel, found it quite accidentally and it was an inspiring find, actually i've just found a nice and dry laurel tree branch and plan to try and make my first flute with it thanks to you. Some people will criticize wether you do things or don't, so keep doing it, you love it (that's so obvious) and ignore them. Cheers from Argentina
This reminds me of when Bruce Lee started teaching Kung Fu in the U.S. back in the day, Chinese Kung Fu masters in China started getting very angry with him for teaching foreigners their “secrets.” And speaking of Bob Ross, I was literally JUST telling myself you actually sound so much like Bob Ross himself. With all that said, you are a very genuine person. I wouldn’t mind buying from you for sure.
This ALL reminds me of how Europeans stole lthe land, claimed it, shared with their own, and displaced Native Americans onto reservations.. You people will never get it because you think appropriation of culture is for you. Honor yourr own lineages by re-rooting yourselves to your own traditions. Play the music that your ancestors played. Be proud.. Let the Native Americans continue to thrive from their own traditions.. instead of writing books, write to your Congress about returning the land..
First of all, the fact that someone took the time to make that a law is hilarius, second, i found your videos because there was a patch of bamboo by my school (9th and 10th grade) and, remembering a, i think southern american style flute my sister owned a few years ago, i wanted to make something similar, so first of all, thank you for all this, second, i finished my first flute, and am having some difficulties, do you think you can make a video of most common begginer mistakes (if you haven't already) in making flutes Also, i felt like a Therapist when i watched this PS problems specifically im having, the bottom 3 fingerings aren't sounding At first, all of them weren't then i watched your "where's the sound' video and fixed it a bit Thanks again for everything you do, God bless
I am grateful and thankful for your tutorials more than words can say and you will always have sore asses out there becouse you are bringing joy to someone else. I've made 8 or so flutes in A, F#, and my favorite, a D I just love. Fixing to do a zebra wood and paduke one in D, next and the joy I get from making and playing them I be atribute to your help and clarity. So thank you regardless of the detractors. Regards and best wishes. P S, I have kept all of them, so no economic impact on flute makers.
Thanks for your kind words Wade! Even in recent times I have had a very well-respected well-known flute player tell me how nasty and evil I am as a justification for his reason of campaigning against me. Ironically, he inadvertently admitted there was a whole group of them out to get me! No worries on my end however, as long as I've helped one person and have done it with a clear conscience I feel totally free and is if it has been worthwhile! Thank you my friend for watching! 😀
🙂👍👍👍👍👍
It would take too many words to tell my flute story, but it started with you. Thank you.
They act like you can only be educated by a master or professor.
)
Well said my friend.
Ricky
I try my friend. Unfortunately a lot of the modern flute theorists still shun me every day!
Thank you for everything Charlie! Keep up the great work. Kutaputush!

Sorry about this being so long but there was a lot more I wanted to write.
My nan bjld
I play one of your drone flutes in A, it sounds fantastic. I also bought a kit from you also great. Ignore the small minded people and keep making flutes🙂👍
Thank you my friend!
I love your videos and openness with sharing information. That was the reason I bought my first flute from you, a piece that I know will be created with love and integrity.
@@simongudgeon 🙏🏼🙂🙏🏼 Thank you!
Thank you deeply my friend! Your kindness is appreciated!
In case you need our shipping info, here's the page: bluebearflutes.com/shipping
Please be sure to subscribe and share our videos also!
I have been told several times that my ideas won't work. I proved them wrong every time. As you said, everything is possible. Michael
Love it
Thank you my friend! Love those children, they grow up too quickly!
@@BlueBearFlutes they really do and every moment like today is a memory worth holding on to
Charlie, your channel found me at the beginning of the week.
And thank you greatly for your kind words! I wish others had the same appreciation. 🙂
Over the years, I have appreciated your attitude, expertise, gifts and abilities, outreach, and more. Thanks!
Thank you so much my friend! At times it seems as if it is an acquired taste!
No words can show my appreciation of your comment! Thank you so very much!
I bought my first flute from you Charlie and it - you - helped me through this difficult time.
Most people presume the tangible but can only imagine how much help you have been to me! No amount of money could ever buy what it is I have received!
Thank you for the inspiring words Charlie. Not sure what you call my personality type but whenever someone tries to tell me "I can't" it makes me want to try even more.
Made my first flute after watching your videos. Tiki torch bamboo from Walmart. Appreciate your videos and the flute I purchased from you. Thanks!
Beautifully said my friend!
Great advice Charlie, I appreciate your willingness and your honesty 👍
Thank you my friend for your kind words. Keep making flutes!
Charlie, you are an inspiration. Thank you for all you do! God bless you and your family.
I know exactly what you mean!
Hi Charlie, You are one of the most equitable people I've ever purchased anything from. The amp is still working great.
The person you're referring to can teach us all a valuable lesson. The lesson is to learn the sound of Iktomi's voice.
Thanks for being the man of conviction and principle that you are.
Until next time
My Brother,
There's always going to be opposition when you're doing something great. Rise above jealous criticism and stand tall knowing you're making a positive impact in the lives of others. You've inspired me to make flutes. And now I'm attempting other instruments. I wouldn't have been inspired to do so without your videos. Thank you!
I just learned how to make these flutes from your videos! I'm so grateful for the knowledge you share. Thank you !
Thank you my friend! Don't forget we have hundreds of other videos!
Thank you so very much for your kind words! You might want to email me about the side blown research😉.
🙏
Thank you sir. I have had to fight for all of my knowledge most people don't want to give it up that like if I know what they know I'm going to take out of their pocket I don't understand that I thought knowledge was to be passed down thank you for sharing
I believe in you, Charlie. You helped me get started on my own flute making journey. I really appreciate what you have done to introduce so many people to enjoy making and playing this wonderful instrument.
Thank you my friend! Your words do me a great deal of honor!
Believe me, the honor is mine. :)
Thank you so much!
Great job Charlie. Thanks for all you do. My father, who was also a wise man always told me, "My son, never tell your enemy where your goat is tied out. They will be sure to go get it" lol. Keep on keeping on my friend!
What may scare them is I have an entire herd of goats! (and I haven't told anyone where they're at!)
👍
i live in the uk! you are a very generous and humble guy. just keep doing what you are doing. you are greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your kind message!
Thank you for being genuine and sharing your knowledge! The world needs more people that do that!
🙏🏼😊🙏🏼
@@BlueBearFlutes wow, thank you! 😊
Charlie, been following you for years. You are a wonderful person, keep up the good work and inspirations.
Thank you for all you do!
Thank you for sharing your culture from your heart. With great respect for you and your Elders, past and present.
I make tin whistles and transverse flutes myself and love your channel! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for your generosity, sharing is caring! I'm determined to learn this craft 🙏🕊️
Thank you my friend! It can become difficult but it is a very rewarding hobby! The key to it is never give up. 😄
Never. 🌬️✨
Thanks for all you do. I have been inspired by your videos and thanks to you am learning to make my own flutes. You are the real deal!
This video is inspiring me to order a kit.
In my heart I believe that music is a direct line to the Creator, a form of prayer regardless of your ethnicity or religion. Music needs to be accessible to everyone and Charlie makes that possible.

You are a.tremendous blessing to All!Ajo
This reminds me of when Bruce Lee started teaching Kung Fu in the U.S. back in the day, Chinese Kung Fu masters in China started getting very angry with him for teaching foreigners their “secrets.”
And speaking of Bob Ross, I was literally JUST telling myself you actually sound so much like Bob Ross himself.
With all that said, you are a very genuine person. I wouldn’t mind buying from you for sure.
Well said.
First of all, the fact that someone took the time to make that a law is hilarius, second, i found your videos because there was a patch of bamboo by my school (9th and 10th grade) and, remembering a, i think southern american style flute my sister owned a few years ago, i wanted to make something similar, so first of all, thank you for all this, second, i finished my first flute, and am having some difficulties, do you think you can make a video of most common begginer mistakes (if you haven't already) in making flutes
Also, i felt like a Therapist when i watched this
PS problems specifically im having, the bottom 3 fingerings aren't sounding
At first, all of them weren't then i watched your "where's the sound' video and fixed it a bit
Thanks again for everything you do, God bless
@@BlueBearFlutes Thank you and you are very welcome.

I love this video so much. There is a huge difference between cost and value. And a huge difference between tradition and trade "secrets"
Hope you can ignore those who seem to be born to distract others from their goals/dreams. In other words, don’t let the bad drive out the good.
