I have a question for my alfa 156 2.4jtd.The question is that,what happens if you remove the old belt and by mistake you turn the camshaft,how are you going to make the timing.I mean when i turned the crankshaft just to test does my engine have the proper timing i noticed that the crankshaft makes 2 revolutions for every 1 of the camshaft to have the marks align on both of them.Does that mean when you change the belt and water pump and etc.,you use the old alignment,and just if necessary you turn a tooth forward or backwards(if the last time the guy who made the change made a mistake,or for some reason the belt skiped a tooth)?And if all things you make the mistake to turn the crankshaft or camshaft by mistake without a belt,what happens?Removing rocker cover,so you can properly align them back?Thanks in advance

Hello, After two or four completed turns of the crankshaft, it is normal to have the marks which are on the belt not aligned to the marks from the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys. That alignment it is just for the initial position before turning. After the turning you must check two main things: - The right position of the indicator from the tensioner (if that indicator is not in the right place you must adjust the tension again) - And the marks alignment between the pulleys and the marks on the block engine. Thanks for the quick reply! So I should keep turning the engine over by hand until the belt stabilizes? I have all the timing tools and I am following the instructions that came with the kit from gates. On the first rotation I am two teeth to the right off of the pulley timing marks on the belt and then second rotation four teeth. Tensioner is reading correct and water pump and guides new. Is this normal as I cannot find any information on this problem?
Hello, Timing belt marks are only used to mount it correctly. It's normal that belt marks are not aligned after turning the engine. P.S.: Next time, choose Airtex timing belt kit+water pump.

So when I check the tension by turning the engine over by hand the marks on the belt are two teeth off on the crank and cam? Anyone know why?
