  • Jim Croce - Walkin' back to Georgia
    I'm walkin' back to Georgia
And I hope she will take me back
    Nothin' in my pockets
And all I own is upon my back
    Chorus:
But she's the girl who said she loved me
On that hot dusty Macon road
    And if she's still around
    I'm gonna settle down
With that hard lovin' Georgia girl
    I'm walkin' back to Georgia
She's the only one who knows
How it feels when you lose a dream
And how it feels when you dream alone
    Chorus
Georgia can you hear me callin'
Oh I'll be home in just a while
And if I had to I'd be crawlin'
Just to share another mornin' smile
But you're the girl who said you loved me
On that hot dusty long ago
    And if you're still around
    I'm gonna settle down
With you my hard lovin' Georgia girl...because
    I'm walkin' back to Georgia
And I hope she will take me back
    Nothin' in my pockets
And all I own is upon my back
    Chorus

Really amazing how you can hear the sincerity in his voice with each lyric, but for me, particularly with "but you're the girl who said you loved me..." I think all men know how much we hold onto those words from girls like this, no matter how long it may have been.

This song has haunted me for almost 50 years. I live in Georgia and my ex and I hung out on a road called Macon Road. We said “I love you” many times as we rode up and down our Macon Road. Since we split (we were so young), we have often talked about what might have been. Beautiful memories!

Love the line “And if she’s still around I’m gonna settle down’. That tells the listener that he doesn’t even know if she’s there anymore. And when you add in his misfortune of having all he owns on his back, and walking in the hot Georgia heat just to take a chance at her love, is a true testament to the genius songwriter that Jim was.

This song is just outstanding in every way! The girl it reminds of was probably who I should have spent my life with. Our lives (like a lot of other peoples) changed when I left our small town in Arizona for the service. She tops my list of things regrettably lost to time, and after 40 yrs. I could still grieve if I let myself do so. But that would only harm me and maybe her as well. We will be together after this world is through with us, I hope.

Thats a bold statement and I can respect it .I was just a kid ..in fact Croce had already passed before I discovered his music. Many years later I became aware of Dylan and all things changed. But I will give you this....Nothing has ever come close to Dylan ....even Neil Young agrees but I think Neil is on same level and I agree with you on Croce ...all three are the best of my time on the planet. God Bless.

    Mmm, mmm
    Walkin' back to Georgia
And I hope she will take me back.
    Nothin' in my pockets,
And all I own is on my back.
But she's the girl who said she loved me
On that hot dusty Macon road,
And if she's still around, I'm gonna settle down
With that hard lovin' Georgia girl,
    Mmm
    I'm walkin' back to Georgia;
She's the only one who knows
How it feels when you lose a dream
And how it feels when you dream alone.
She's the girl who said she loved me
On that hot dusty Macon road
And if she's still around, I'm gonna settle down
With that hard lovin' Georgia girl.
    Mmm
    Georgia can you hear me callin';
I'll be home in just a while.
And if I had to I'd be crawlin'
Just to share another mornin' smile.
You're the girl who said you loved me
On that hot dusty long ago,
And if you're still around, I'm gonna settle down
With you, my hard lovin' Georgia girl.
    Mmm
Because I'm walkin' back to Georgia,
And I hope she will take me back.
    Nothin' in my pockets
And all I own is on my back.
She's the girl who said she loved me
On that hot, dusty Macon road
And if she's still around, I'm gonna settle down
With that hard lovin' Georgia girl.
    Mmm, mmm

I find it hard to think how prolific Jim was in such a short time on the planet. But what strikes me even more is that for a man who was with one woman nearly his entire life, he had such a firm hold on the emotions of lost love. Often when I listen to his music, I find myself washed in the loss I felt after marriages failed. Yes marriages...plural. Even though in those cases it didn't end with good relationships, I find myself with warm, wonderful feelings about the time we had.

+Thomas Ponzio I always loved Box #10 & A Long Time Ago, but you're spot-on---there's no filler here. It's all solid, talent generated brilliance.
These songs are so honest and from the heart they just draw you into them. And months or even years later coming across one of them you naturally feel that long dormant admiration you once knew come back in vivid 2015 HD.
I'm going to listen to them all. I almost forgot how incredibly powerful Walking Back To Georgia can be.
I feel like I'm on that hot dusty Macon road....it's all so tangible I can smell peach blossoms weaved into the fumes of a Greyhound bus.
      okay, bye!

About 8 yrs ago I was digging through boxes in my parents basement and found my Aunt's old record collection. I then purchased a record player & was rooting through her vinyls when I came across Jim Croce's "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". I will never forget that moment when I pressed play and sat down on my bed as I watched the arm move from the resting position and lower itself down until the needle met the vinyl, there was several seconds of crackling and then I first heard his voice. Magic

Kevin on dads cell, Lightfoot and the rest above are all among the best (except Bieber ) and greatest of poets and songwriters, but none compares with Jim Croce as far as songs about real people they knew, and everyone new a bad bad Leroy Brown, or someone they'd "have to say I love you , in a song" to, he brought back laughter, love, hope , honesty honer and simple living to us at a time when many felt we had not just lost our first war, but all the above as well. His simple lyrics grounded us and made us realize how strong our foundation and support structure, as a country united , were. And at a time when everyone wondered " WHAT NEXT ?"
HE REMINDEF US WHat happens when you take advantage of those weaker, something the younger generation's now have no concept of.
