- The singer-songwriter lost his dad in a plane crash before he turned two, temporarily lost his sight when he was four, and lost his wife to a heart condition. Now 50, musician and songwriter A.J. Croce is turning to the music that his father, Jim Croce, had made famous, and in the process is embracing his father's legacy - and his own. Correspondent Jim Axelrod reports.

Jim Croce needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The fact that musicians like he and Warren Zevon among others are still not enshrined makes the RnR Hall of Fame lose a great deal of its credibility.
Along with other great artists Johnny Rivers !

We, on a personal level, felt the loss of Jim Croce as if he was a close relative. I feel that loss every time I listen to his music. It's bitter/sweet.
I’m 70 years old. My teen years were filled with Jim’s music. I still listen to his albums on vinyl! This was a great story that bright back great memories. Lost him way too soon.

When I was fourth fifth and sixth grade… Croce put out hits like Michael Jackson or Jackson Browne …I laid in my bedroom for hours listening to his albums over and over again… I believe I became a poet Because of his fathers influence
I was laying in a hospital bed after a near fatal head-on collision (July 3, 1973) when I heard the news of his death. I was devastated! Jim's music spoke to my soul more than any musician's had before. His music will live in me and still be here long after I am gone.

I just started crying when I heard that after his Father died and his Mother saw another man later on that man beat him severely and he lost his eye sight. Also, hearing that out of respect for his Dad he could not touch his music until many many years. A.J. also lost his wife. He has suffered terribly in this life but his attitude and outlook on life is still positive and hopeful. He is a graceful man and I wish him only the best. He is not just a worthy legacy but the great legacy of the great late Jim Croce. His Father would be proud of him.

I was lucky enough to see Jim perform in Buffalo. It was a wonderful show, and when he died only 3 weeks later, my wife and I both cried.

Croce played at my elementary school in early 70’s right before the crash. He had just become famous and most would’ve canceled those low paying school concerts but not Jim Croce he was a man of his word. For years I never knew how our school got a famous star to play for us and then I heard the story of how he kept his word to all the small schools he had booked even after he several 1 hits. I was in 2 or 3rd grade. Thank you Jim.

I never got to see Jim Croce, but Harry Chapin honored his word and continued to play at elementary schools. Happy to have seen him before his death. This was in NJ, around '73 or so.

Time in a Bottle was played at our wedding, and now I sing it for my wife whenever we go out to karaoke. I have also done Photographs and Memories, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, You Don't Mess Around with Jim, and Operator. This is a singer-songwriter that wants he's touched your heart, you're never going to be able to forget him. I cannot believe the tragic story of his son, and I'm glad that the music lives on. I most certainly will be doing my part.

AJ, your father was one of my biggest influences in playing the guitar and my learning how to learn finger picking. I remember saving up and I have all three music books for his three albums. I think it's time someone brings Jim Croce back in the public's eyes and who better than his son. You are a great talent and I'm sure your father is looking down and smiling! I feel a real connection to Jim and his music. My dad loved his songs and died just 6 months after Jim did. I was 9 and it left a giant hole in my life, but listening to 'Bad Bad Leroy Brown' and 'Time In a Bottle' brings my daddy back to me for just a little while

I loved His music as well, I used to request taxi and sequel to taxi on local all night radio while I was pregnant,the D.J. Would sometimes do one or the other but not both in one night, shortly after giving birth and having a multiply disabled child, I was still up all night, but it was a shock one night when that’s all he played,, I called the station to talk to the DJ .he said “ oh hun haven’t you heard? “ I was heart broken.❤❤❤ to his son
I live around the corner from that farmhouse. The state of PA put up a historical marker to mark the spot. I had no idea so much musical history took place at that little unassuming farm house.

A legend and he only broke out 3 years. We have his treasured voice and lyrics in that time. We loved him. Not your usual Hollywood kind and he loved deeply.
I am sure that Jim would be so proud of A.J. and the man he has become. Hearing Croce's songs again made me melancholy and hopeful all at the same time.

I was told by Ingrid Croce that "Time in a Bottle" was a love song that Jim wrote for his son, A.J. I had always loved that song, and when I learned the backstory, it was an awesome and tender revelation. God bless the Croces!
Jim Croce's passing always has had a profound impact on me.
I was a junior in high school and loved his music. I was in a guitar group at church
and we all marveled how well Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen played together.
They were both on that plane.

I was devastated when Jim and Murray died in that crash. I was really looking forward to whatever else they had to share with us all. I'm so sorry that AJ had such a rough life, but he has come out on top and he will do well. A big hand shake and hug to the man, glad you're here with us all. BTW, for me, that one song is Operator. @@rogerfox9028 I don't know that I've ever heard him play 12 string. I haven't heard much of his stuff, there was that one 2 record set that came out right after they died, and it had some on it. I wish I knew where that one went to, it's disappeared from my collection (along with about 5 copies of the first Hot Tuna album).

A good friend performed “Time in a Bottle “ at my wedding almost 42 years ago. Still one of my and my wife’s favorites. Croce’s music is timeless.
I love, love, loved Jim Croce’s music, still do. He had an honest invisibility to the feelings of the soul. What a great tribute to the Musical artist so many of us listened to. I was devastated when I learned if his passing. His son isn’t quite a mirror of his Dad but very close in many ways. I am happy he is honoring him this way.

I loved his father's music growing up. He is a remarkable singer, musician, songwriter himself. He looks so much like his dad.
I grew up in the 70's, not too far from Jim's home in the suburbs of Philly. I've always loved and appreciated his music, I've found that as I've aged It's difficult to listen to his music without shedding a tear or two, it simply touches your soul. His music can touch anyone, of any age, however, I feel those of us who lived through the 70's have a special connection to both the man and his music.

Just the other day I walked the isles of the grocery store with Leroy Brown playing over the speakers of the store. In every isle customers were humming, whistling, and openly singing along with the music. After 50 years, Jim Croce’s music and his legacy lives on.

I was 15 when Jim Croce died. I have a vivid memory of the radio announcement of his death. The impression he made on my life is still there.
I also remember vividly hearing the news on the radio. I was skipping school sitting in the car at the park with my boyfriend. We felt so bad.
I remember that day too; I was 9 and I remember crying as I rode my bike home from school that day.

Oh man, I loved Jim Croce (still do). When I was a sophomore in HS a classmate and I did a multimedia (1976 technology) presentation about him for a language arts project. We got an A and everyone loved the presentation because everyone loved Jim Croce. His death was a couple of years or so prior. What a loss.

When I was 10/11 years old I learned to play many of Jim Croce's songs on my folk guitar. I still play my guitar and his songs -- by memory 50 years later. Thankful for Jim Croce's beautiful and heartfelt music.
I still weep for Jim Croce. I was in my freshman year in a Louisiana college, picking up the guitar when he left us.
A true legend and his partner, the late Maury Muehleisen, created songs that have stood the test of time. So glad AJ is keeping the legacy alive while creating his own musical journey.

It is so heartwarming to see A J carrying on his father's legacy. That's an artist that would be well worth experiencing in concert. Had Jim lived, A J wouldn't have suffered that horrible abuse. But he has risen above it. I wish him much happiness and success.
Holy cow - I just had a flashback to my teens! Back in the early 70's when I was a young boy in school studying music I fell in love with Jim Croce and couldn't wait for the next delivery from the Columbia House music club with my new Jim Croce album! (Google it kids, because you'd be amazed at what we used to go through to listen to music!).
When I heard he was just killed in a plane crash I was 14 years old and absolutely devastated. Man I loved his music! Now everytime I hear a Jim Croce song on the radio I'm transported back to that time in my life when his music so heavily influenced me and made me a better person. And it still brings a tear to my eye!

As a teenager in the 70's, I fell in love with Jim Croce's hauntingly melodic voice. When he suddenly passed away, it affected me deeply as his beautiful music was still so alive. A.J., watching this and hearing your voice singing your dad's songs was a full circle moment for me and I thank you for that. I am glad that you have come around to performing your father's music. Jim's son is an inspiration. He's quite talented, in his own right. Plus, if he grew a mustache, he'd look just like his dad.
To be fair, Maury Muehleisen had a lot to do with Jim Croce's success. Jim never had a hit, never did much of anything, till he got with Maury. Maury was the missing piece that made Croce a success. Croce knew it too,, and without Maury he would've likely never made it. They were a great duo. Jim was actually Maury's backup guitar player, and he decided to do the same for Jim. He even started writing songs for Jim. Maury today is considered one of the most underrated guitar players. Also, the day Croce goes into the HOF, it will not be as a solo act, it will be him and Maury. It is not disrespectful to say it, but Croce would have been nothing without Maury. Kinda like how Sonny would've been nothing without Cher. Without Maury bringing life to all the Croce hits, we would not know of those songs today. Jim and Maury both lucked up and found each other, and became great together.

It's wonderful that Jim Croce left a very talented musician son, wasn't aware of his offspring. I played Croce's music often while growing up in the '70s, made big impact on me and was recently listening to it again. Croce left a terrific musical legacy, glad his son is carrying on his tradition.

Jim was a genius of a songwriter. I remember the day he died. I was in the kitchen getting ready for school when we heard the news on the radio.
I woke up to get ready for school and that was the first thing I was told, it absolutely ruined the day for me.

Wow. This really brings back some memories. I was in 7th grade and my Social Studies teacher was a musician and a HUGE Jim Croce fan. Mr. would bring his guitar to class and sometimes during class and often after school he would sing for us. When Jim Croce died the fall of my 8th grade year, Mr. was devastated and many of my classmates were too because we loved our teacher and thru him loved Jim Croce. I'm really happy to hear AJ is singing the songs.

Your father’s song Time in a bottle, always made me think of my husband, after he passed , I couldn’t listen to it without crying. So it was a few years before I could listen to it again. I first heard it when I was in my twenties when my Boyfriend gave me a tape, he became my husband.
My father served 2 tours in vietnam in 1965 and 1970. My first memories of my father are him playing his acoustic guitar and singing Jim Croce Songs. He loved Jim Croce and continued playing his songs long after Jim Croce died. My father passed away in 2012 after an 8 year battle with ALS which was attributed to his exposure to agent orange while serving in Vietnam. Whenever I hear a Jim Croce song I become a little girl again listening to her daddy sing and play his guitar. He was my hero and these songs were the backdrop of my childhood. I’m so glad A.J. Jim Croce created some of the most iconic songs of the 70s. Who else would write "you don't tug on Superman's cape"? He has been greatly missed, so it's good to hear AJ bringing life back into his father's music.

Love me some Jim. I remember the day I heard he had passed. I was in junior high, and my favorite crank it up song was: "I'll Have to Say I Love You In a Song." A great talent gone too soon. 💔
