R32 GTR Dyno Day Gone WRONG...

    Well, this is definitely not how I wanted to end this video. We were so close to having this car on the street & the track. Towards the end of the dyno session the cam gear bolts that adjust timing fell out and rotated our gear.. jumping timing. We did a leak down test and our compression shows that we have a bad cylinder 4 & 5. I guess it's time to rebuild.

    Nah. That tuner is not it. I guarantee you when Josh set timing on the engine because you are running 272s he degreed that engine so that it would be dead nuts to spec. I have to do this same thing on my truck because I didn't degree my cam, which caused it to bend some valves. That tuner shouldn't have touched timing at all. He should have made a call to the person who assembled the engine asked for cam specs and factory timing settings, and how or what the timing was set to because of the cams. Tuner owes you an engine.

      @@jamesireland9188 not when the tuner touches timing right before the dyno … if they sent her how she was then it went the way that it did then it’s “at your own risk” I’ve never seen a tuner hand adjust timing before without asking the engine builder what they did … most I’ve seen is tuner change plugs, waste gate spring … shit that’s trivial

    Y'all realize the tuner went to Dustin's shop and did another base map after Jimmy did his. So if the timing is off, it would still be on the tuner for changing the base map when he went to Dustin's shop.

      He didn’t do a base map at the shop. He was there to make sure all components were ready for a tune. No timing was set at the shop it was still on jimmys tune. And nobody touched mechanical timing on the GTR

      Can you explain amateur like me - who is responsible for tightening these bolts? Because now it loooks like Tommys team kinda fucked it on their side - when they built that motor. Is there possibility that bolts got loose in any other way?

    You could hear the engine has low compression in multiple holes within a second of cranking it, there was absolutely no reason for that guy to try to start it over and over

    You're not alone...I just spent 6 months and $13,000 for my R33 GTR and I lost cylinder 3 on the dyno. I feel your pain buddy

      I also feel your pain. My R33 GTR arrived with a hurt motor. I knew something was wrong but shop I took it to said it was fine. Blew the other factory turbo shortly
      after. I spent 20k+ (didn't want to do the actual math 😭) refreshing engine, built head, new turbos, E85, clutch etc. Didn't touch the bottom end bc I was spending too much. 6 months later, rodknock.

      @@jrose152 unknown...best guess is it was hurt when I bought it...piston top appeared to be lean in that cylinder...walls were scoured. As we fixed issues around it (boost leaks), it started to show itself. Once everything was nailed down and we started pushing it, it started to smoke. Tables on the Haltech were all messed up before. With a fresh tune, it just couldn't hang lol

      That tuner might have 10 years of experience, but his work ethic is shit if he fucks engines up like this.

      @@smoll.miniatures Dustin said it himself that while he was gone the engine was retimed. It's very possible that they adjusted the cam gears, then didn't tighten them down enough before they made pulls.

    That’s on the tuning shop, if they adjusted Cam timing from whatever was done at Tommy’s shop than they obviously didn’t double check there work and make sure everything was tight…
    That doesn’t happen from adjusting ignition timing, my suggestion When you put this thing back together to avoid this happening again ( or just double checking it before every track day ) is to just put a set of stock cam gears on the motor, those adjustable gears aren’t necessary for the goals you have with the car! They sure do look bitchin…. Sorry Dustin! I know exactly how your feeling right now, i had something similar happen to me after rebuilding my sport bike engine and after she was on the dyno at a buddies shop she let go… mine was a bit more catastrophic but none the less it’s still disappointing 😩
    Atleast it seems like the damage is just in the head and you can get some new valves and the head cleaned up fairly quick to get her back on the dyno asap! Hope you get it worked out, and you know you can always call Pappa Tom if you need any Overnight parts from CT! Keep your head up buddy, shit experiences like this always cause for something better to come in the end!

      they are necessary... it changes the total character of the engine, my rb26 responded very well when adjusting timing. The tip is to always use loctite.....

      @@SamMottaghy it is necessary on certain applications, i had them on my Evo9 Build which was a big HP setup. you can still adjust cam timing on stock gears, just not to the degree you can with adjustable ones. I understand it will make the car respond better.. It is just an additional failure point is what I’m getting at, and Dustin’s build isn’t anything too wild where having those will really benefit his overall build… it’s a pretty mild setup he’s running, if a tuner can’t get the engine to run Happy with just a set of MILD ass cams and a single turbo then he’s just not good at his job.. for the purposes he wants to use it for, he needs reliability. Continuous Track beatings Vs. spirited Street driving and the occasional track day/drag strip/racing is different.
      I dont know much about this specific platform but i do know how engines work and what affects what, and if he can get away with not using them then i think he will be happier than just having some dope anodized gears on his motor.. yes loctite will help you but it’s not a end all be all savior.. Having to constantly monitor them is what’s needed and i think dutt wants something he can abuse and have the least amount of maintenance/failure points

    Man, I could feel Dustin's pain in this video :( 5 minutes before the engine had its issues he was so hyped and I was so hyped for him and then he was thrown a huge curveball. It's an unfortunate step back but we are all here for you Dustin! Looking forward to you guys getting the car back running and seeing you rip it on the track!! Hopefully sooner rather than later!!       highly doubt he would do that right now the engine most likely isnt even ready. Dut is most likely going to scavenge as much as he can from this engine and rebuild it again

    I'm putting blame on the tuner. They :adjusted timing" while Dustin wasn't in the shop. Josh built this engine and he's one of the best that specialize in RB26 builds. I know Josh performed a full bolt check before that car left the service bay. Next step is pulling the head to see how bad the damage is.

    Bummer! Should have left the car to let jimmy tune it! He may be a self taught, only tunes for himself and his friends type of tuner, but those are some of the best and most knowledgeable tuners you could find! Hope you get it fixed up soon Dustin!

These guys are trash good mechanics on standby though!

      Gears that probably won’t even be dialed in properly to start with, even if they are give tiny gains. But it’s TH-cam and people assume you tubers actually have a clue about what they’re doing. I wouldn’t touch a car/engine built by a TH-camr.

    Why was it even tuned at 5150? They mostly work on evos. They have quite an unfavorable reputation in the Evo community.

    10000% tuners fault, what a mess this car has been. its crazy, even after determining that cylinder 4 and 5 were bad the tuner tries to start it again as if the leak down was wrong, jesus christ...

      If the cam gears were that loose it would go out of sink between cam and crank ...most likely pop and bang ...that motor sounds like it cracked a piston from tuner ignoring timing issues ...the power graph would of been all over the place

      @@Jcc693 5150 is well known in SoCal. He makes some fast cars but runs them hard. I’ve ran a few an theyre fast for about half a season then blow. He’s moved onto the audi/vw platform an I’ve been hearing the same shit . If you want a fast car an have the money to rebuild - 5150 is your tune 😂

      Yup, not to mention the idiot tried running it after 1) one of his (assuming) employees said it had bad leak down and possible valve piston contact and 2) dustin saying there’s metal coming from somewhere. Tim had to tell him to stop trying to start it, dude should be no where near cars especially ones that aren’t his

    Has anyone seen how many complaints and blown motors have come outta this place? 3* tuning on Godzilla should've been a big no imo plus seeing how they shut everyone down that had an issue with a "they signed the waiver" I'm sure Dut signed this waiver as well, smh 🤧

    You need an actual GTR specialist to build and tune this car. Have Tommy’s shop take the extra time to fully build it, U.P. Garage here in Washington State or Garage Saurus in Santa Ana down in Orange County.

    Hold up didn’t the tuner “fix” the timing of the car when it wasn’t idling good? He probably forgot to tighten the bolts sooo… it’s the tuners fault.

      Also yes I know the difference between ignition timing and mechanical timing. He never specified which it was and said it was “completely out of time” and pointed to the front of the motor. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    For everyone wondering - the tuner did NOT touch the adjustable cam gear. He adjusted timing ELECTRONICALLY. The cam gear adjustment bolts were not tight, causing it to slip.

    But man, this sucks, and I feel for you guys. It’s easy to watch and nit pick, but this has to be tough, because it was hard to even watch. Keep your head up man.     I don't care what anyone says Tuner specifically said oh I had to fix the timing then all of sudden the engine is blown up due to a timing issue if there is ever a reason to say HERE'S YOUR SIGN this is it. This supposed to be tuner would be paying for my repairs or we would be in court I would also be asking for the data logs which he should have if he will give them up is another story.

    Adjustable CAM gears are a risk, even with tightening them down you still run the risk of them coming lose during turning, most old school tuner will tell you not to use adjustable CAM gear, BECAUSE the bolts WILL come loose. During turning they should be set to 0 anyway because of the upgraded computer. These adjustable CAM gears works mainly for stock computers…

    That's what happens when you have people rush and engine/ build together. Also the tuner should have checked those adjustable gears before he ever started making pulls.

      The tuner himself adjusy timing before the dino, and not to mention he change the base tune in dustin shop days before and then say the tune is all off. This one its all on the tuner 🤷‍♂️

    I know RB’s have a ton of vibration in them, more than most engines and are some what notorious for making bolts come loose. It’s possible that the vibrations of the engine made them loosen up rather then them not being torqued. Also I don’t know what the prp cam gear stuff calls for but it didn’t look like there was any kind of thread locked on those bolts. Maybe they need some loctite or something to stop them from backing out

    Things like this suck no matter who's fault it is. I wouldn't leave my car there with someone tuning it without me there 100% of the time especially if it's someone I don't know. Also I wouldn't take a car like that to just anyone. Now your left taking the guys word on what he did while you weren't there. Guy owes ya something especially after cranking on a hurt engine after its said not to run it any more. cringe!!!!!

      Not tommy's fault, but yes on the tuner, he did a base tune on dustin's shop and after that the car was out of timing and the tuner change the timing before the dino, only one to blame here it's the tuner 🤷‍♂️

      One week builds of that magnitude are a recipe for mishaps, in this case a disaster because the problem stayed hidden until pushed.

      Doubtful. They did a full bolt check in the last video & the engine was retimed at the dyno while Dustin was getting the seat.

    If it is just bent valves at least it’s not so hard of a fix. Order the valves, pull the head, seat the valves, put everything back together and time engine. Also to be safe check the pistons to see if they have damage too. This sucks but you’ll come back better good looks brother!

    When I built and assembled my engine it was very nerve racking, but it is also rewarding when it runs the way you expected it too. So I feel for Dustin, when something like this happens after putting so much time and effort into it you just lose so much motivation. Luckily Dustin has a lot of friends and connections so he'll push through it, I didn't have that during my engine build journey. Also on a side note, whenever installing adjustable cam gears it is recommended to red loctite the bolts so they don't back out. You got this Dustin! come back better and stronger!
