I've been whip finishing flies for a while now, had I found your channel months ago I would have learned that I was doing it wrong from the beginning. Of all the instructional videos I have watched on materelli style whip finishers, no one else breaks it down so clearly or concisely. To you good sir, I say thank you!
For over a year as beginner i made always the knot with my hands coz i found no other videos that explains it so slow and easy, thanks bro! I'm going to try it out right away👍
Thornapple Fishing Outdoors I mean you still need some Sort of glue or cement to finish the fly. The threads wouldn’t last long at all unlesss it’s properly cemented
Thank you for showing this, i got that exact tieoff tool as a present recently and didn't know how to properly use it (I'm used to an older version that im borrowing, it's very bendy and has a spring like part to it)
im self teaching myself to tie and mostlyivebeen able to skate on creativity, but i wasnt happywith the ugly finish knots i was making, thanks for making this video short and simple!
Thanks for sharing this!! I've tried two other whip finishers and just can't get the hang of them, even after watching great TH-cam tutorials on how to use them. No fault of the presenters though!! I just couldn't get them to work. This looks like the simplest and most effective finisher out there. Cheers!! :)
Great video. Hope you're in good health. I see it's been 10 years since you've posted your 1st video. Wish you had more available because your step by step process was great and easy to follow.
The Thumbs down people give no explanation so it must be good. Just got mine today to looking forward to trying it out. Really interested in any negatives about this method though. Nice explanation by the way 👍
I learned in a class about six years ago. Never had the chance to use it a lot due to mom getting sick. I do remember though that it was so easy to do. I'm getting back into tying (learning) and will be using this again. I'm going to be practicing this as my review to tying. It's so important when finishing off the fly.
Thank you sincerely for the simplest explanation ive ever seen! Probably cos you're British! Americans always complicate everything, cos they can't stop rambling!!
Hi many thanks for sharing amazing content I subbed you do you have any advice on buying a fly tying kit as I am interested in tying my own flies. Many thanks.clive.
Nice video! Just happened to notice the scissors you used to trim the thread, they look very sharp and come to a fine point, just wondering what the scissors are since I’m looking for a nice pair. I also like your whip finisher, is it an original materelli or just a replica/copy, if so where did you get it from? If you don’t mind :) Thanks, Alex
So you’ve got a hook with some thread tied on it… is this a start to something? Does it go somewhere like when we get to the part when I put feathers on the thing?
Seems perfect to me…maybe try more and be patient with yourself. Hard for me too with my first SEVERAL flies. If you think that will not work be comfortable in the fact you are an idiot at it and try something else, like buying the flies and Tenkara fishing….
The best way and quickest is to use your right and and two fingers! Watch someone who knows, and you don't need ANY hardware like this. The single hand method is, was, and will be used by pro fly tiers. It is simple, accurate, and incredibly simple. Check out and old timer, or someone who knows how to do it. As far as this whip finisher, it's ok, but not needed. Who taught me? Al Brewster, Art Flick, Joe Bates. Is that good enough for you experts out there?
You can also use a looped piece of thread, bind over that, and pull the end through. I'm not a fan of extras in my tying. Scissors, a good Regal vise, and decent ingredients. Whip Finishers? Not really a thing most people would need if they took a five minute lesson. IMHO
Funnily enough Craig I don't use a tool myself as I tend to mislay them. In my experience many novice tyers prefer to learn the technique with a tool and once you realise the process of forming a running loop it it's easy to switch. Actually I'm quite an old timer myself having been tying flies for more than fifty years.
Ouch. Whip finish should instead be tied forward from the back of the hook towards the eye. To see why, scale up with small diameter rope/string on a broom handle ... s/b readily apparent why. This tutorial, well intentioned, promoting a bad habit?
I've probably executed a whip finish in excess of 20,000 times, probably twice that. Tying thread is so fine that for practical purposes it's irrelevant. Plus, when you have have finished a fly and covered the base of a wing or collar hackle the thread is invariably close to the eye.
As someone who is new to this hobby, thank you for this video

I agree, this is the clearest information available!
THIS is the video that taught me. 1000’s of flies later just wanted to say thank you 🙏
I feel like I always come back here for a refresher. Thank you!
This is how you compose videos, people. No fluff, no nonsense.
Great video! No BS just here it is and this is how you do it. Good job man!
Seriously this is the ABSOLUTE BEST explanation
Glad you like it. Hope it helps.

Thank you for the best explanation.
I am begginner and it helped a lot!!!
Finally! I have found a great video to help me finish my flies because it is better than using glue, who else thinks doing this is better than glue.
Thornapple Fishing Outdoors I mean you still need some
Sort of glue or cement to finish the fly. The threads wouldn’t last long at all unlesss it’s properly cemented
You still need some sort of glue.
I use both
Great video. Thanks for explaining while slowly illustrating. Finally makes sense.
Awesome tutorial! Quick, easy and no bullshit! Love it! Thank you!

Couldn't have been made better, thank you!
Thank you for showing this, i got that exact tieoff tool as a present recently and didn't know how to properly use it (I'm used to an older version that im borrowing, it's very bendy and has a spring like part to it)
Thanks again just rushed off to give it a go and eureka it actually worked I've just got to learn to tie flies now and I've cracked it
Well damn. This minute and half could have saved me 2 months, a stomach lining and a vise that I wouldn’t have thrown out the window.
im self teaching myself to tie and mostlyivebeen able to skate on creativity, but i wasnt happywith the ugly finish knots i was making, thanks for making this video short and simple!

attachment of the thread, an area where many beginners struggle, could be shown more clearly and not obscured by the tyer's hands
Thanks makes much more sense it's like you have revealed a magicians secret
Thank you for the helpful video it help me a lot keep making great videos

Walter - this is just a way to illustrate the whip finish - a way of securing the tying thread. It is actually done when the fly has been completed.
Great Tip. Regards
Thanks so much for this
Thank you!
ty my brother from indonesia
Dis is super helpful

Felt this comment so much 😅 I know they say practice makes perfect but my whip finishes are just not there yet lol
