If you'd like to try this out, here is the full recipe / write up barrylewis.net/recipe/tin-can-bread/ (which Chloe typed up as part of her home schooling during the lockdown!)
For decades my Grandma baked bread in large tin cans. This was done so she could get 12 loaves in the oven all at once. She lived on a farm and when her children were young this was done about once a week. My Mom and Aunt learned how to do this as well, so now that she is gone we are still able to make her bread. ❤️
My Grandmom also baked bread using old coffee tin cans. Mostly pumpkin bread for Thanksgiving/Christmas. We still do it if we can find the correct size cans.
You guys need (sorry) to know something... In these times with social distancing, you are my personal go-to-not-feel-alone family... I´ve always enjoyed your videos, but feeling alone and cut-off, has shown me that you do so much more. You´re not trying to be something more, than what you really are, and I think that you all really give a lot of people peace and smiles in these trying times. So thanks for being you. All of you. You make me feel like me, by being you. Lots of love from Denmark
When I lived in Missoula, Montana (USA), there was a restaurant that made sandwiches using this bread. They would pull out the inside of the loaf and fill it with sandwich meats and fixings. It was called the club foot sandwich. The restaurant's name is The Staggering Ox. Would highly recommend eating there!
Thank you for the little update. I'm happy to see all of you healthy! I miss the vlogs, they always felt like a visit from friends that tell us what's going on in their lives :)
Do you have an air fryer Barry? I bought one recently and I've been cooking EVERYTHING in it. If it fits, it goes in the air fryer, You can bake bread in them apparentely , maybe you could make an entire "Will it air-fry" series.
My mum loves her air fryer but I've always been a bit wary of it (she's not a great cook) and preferred to just use the oven but because of lockdown I've tried using it and I love it now. You can get stuff so much crispier than in the oven.
i'm pretty sure that it's heating not only air inside of it, but also all the inner parts of the oven, which are radiating heat for quite a while afterwards, so it'll stay pretty hot, enough for bread to quickly heat up and rise
I was once given a department store mannequin. (Long story, don't ask.) I put her in my living room. Every day I'd come home from work, open the door, see her, and scream. So I moved her to the kitchen. Then several times a day I'd walk into the kitchen to cook or get a glass of water, see her, and scream. I finally had to get rid of her, because I'm sure the neighbors thought they were living next door to the Addams Family or something.
Here in the states we have ‘Boston brown bread’ that comes in a tin and is classically served with baked beans. ( Though, I prefer it just toasted with butter. )It’s more like a malt loaf than regular bread. I wish you would try making that. I’ve always wanted to try, and I’d love someone else to do it first.
Made this as a kid when camping! We kept the dries in a plastic bag and the wets in another, got a campfire going, emptied the tin (probably beans) in a pot, emptied the dries and wets in the tin and mixed, then popped it on the fire and cooked it alongside. Very tasty! If you end up doing a camping food video like you mentioned revisit this one!
Ok so not going to lie, and I know this is more of Stuart's thing, but I was imagining you showing off pre-canned bread. I didn't realize until I started watching that you were actually making it. This is really cool!
@@mrbarrylewis they DO have canned bread. You can get it on Amazon. Round loaf, with or without raisins. With is delish!!! We keep it on hand for emergencies/treats.
My main oven broke years ago. As I live on my own I got a counter top oven and like it so much I haven't felt the need to fix the main oven 😂 Thanks for all the work you put in to your videos, you always make me smile. I adored the live streams, especially when Mrs Barry kept tidying up too quickly.
Still absolutely love my Barry Lewis veggie prep kit. Next up is the baking mats. Anything else in the works Barry? Cannot wait till your next line of kitchenware.
The seal thing just makes my day every time. Dude, I love your rustic kitchen in progress videos! I don’t know why but the kitchen renovations are fascinating. 😆
I am glad to see you guys are ok, and I am so happy that you got your dream home, everyone one deserves to get theirs. I do love your videos so much I watch them while I am at work because sadly if I want to pay my bills i have to be there. but you cheer me up. have a good week
Mommy and I used to use this method with bread 'batters' (pumpkin, banana, etc) during the Holidays when I was a child. This brought back such nostalgia for me!!
My grandmother was baking bread in cans back in the 1930s, My mom remembered having cans the same size as a hard salami that my grandfather favored for sandwiches for lunch at work, so it was perfect. Mom also remembered that on the weekly baking day, that she and her brothers got to eat the puffed out bread fresh and hot as a treat.
I love watching your video's barry! You and your family inspire me to get back into the kitchen. Your videos have even inspired my niece and nephew to learn cooking. Keep being you, your an inspiration!
A lot of the new construction in the US has the laundry room upstairs... where most of the closets, hampers and bedrooms are. Everything stays on the same level no more huffing the washing up and down stairs that way. I would love a laundry room on the same level as the bedrooms.
We have such an old house there is a washer in the kitchen and you have to go out the back door across the driveway towards the separate garage/workshop to reach the dryer is it’s not nice enough to hang on the line 😂
My mum used to make a country style loaf in tin cans, the really big ones you get for catering purposes. She worked for a resthome and would get the empty cans of beans and what not, then make bread in them. This was back in the early '90s, and I've never forgotten, even if I've never tried it because I have a habit of killing yeast when attempting to make bread. :-D
I'm glad you and the family were able to move into your dream home! I think I started watching this channel right around the time you moved into the last one and it will be missed, but I can't wait to see the new kitchen when it's finished!
in my old apartment we had washing machine and dryer stacked in the bathroom and in my actual house we have a separate room just for them and where we keep cleaning supplies and that kind of stuff
My favorite tin can bread is steamed brown bread. It's dense sweet and perfect foil for boston baked beans. Oh, that's an idea for a show. Beans slow baked with a ham hock, a whole onion, molasses, mustard, brown sugar, a little maple syrup and covered with water. Yum. The bread uses rye, corn meal, whole wheat flour, molasses baking powder, salt, currents poued into tin cans and steamed more like a dense pudding slathered with butter and what a Sunday feast
When I was growing up my grandparents own a restaurant and they were famous for their coffee can bread that they made french toast and everything out of it was delicious I should make some
I did something like this years ago using beer cans and bread made using some of the beer they contained. Supermarkets around me have the problem where the mills are open to make the flour but the bag makers aren't so the only option is 16kg sacks for £9. My usual bread "tin" is a silicon bowl that has a slot and tab thing that lets you curl the bowl around the dough for rising and baking, might be worth checking them out for a bakers bundle.
May seem obvious but I was thinking that if you used larger tins like the bigger tins of tomatoes, milo tins (from Australia) or the tinned fruit tins then you would get medium sized tins that may produce a better size for your bread. Love this idea though and really enjoy baking so am keen to give it a go. Thanks! :)
Double your butter and make liquid gold. The bread will be richer and yummier and it'll be properly incorporated. Also use less flour! I know it's sticky at first but it's supposed to be. You'll get a really dry bread by adding too much flour. Rookie. I make much bread at home. But this is a great recipe
Yeah, I remember reading that washing machines in the kitchen or bathroom are a thing because the plumbing is already there and there's no space for a dedicated room. Usually in older apartments or houses.
I had my kitchen done earlier in the year, finished just before the lockdown began. It was a pain, took weeks longer than expected and cost a fortune. Primarily it was knocking down a wall, putting in a steel support and then fitting the kitchen itself (redoing all the electrics, gas and water pipes as well). I am glad it is over, I never want to have to do that again....I don't envy anyone going through it.
In Finland washing machine is usually in bathroom. I have it close to my shower as most households that I know. Some (mostly newer or/and newly renovated households) has separeted laundry rooms
@@mrbarrylewis I actually think I've never visited a household in Finland that has washing machine in the kitchen in my almost 30 years of living. It's funny how different our "normal" things are!
In Germany the washing machine is either in the kitchen, bathroom, basement or a dedicated laundry room. It´s just about where you got the space and a water connection. Wish you much joy in your new home!
I've never heard of using a billy for bread, only for heating water, making tea/coffee, maybe heating soup? I want to try this and maybe make it like a pull-apart loaf :)
I've not seen flour at my local shop for 3 weeks now. I am running a little low on baking goods but I did buy Greek yogurt to try the 3 ingredient bagels. Wish me luck and stay safe x
It's crazy to me that so many people are having trouble finding things like milk and baked goods because I haven't had an issue this entire time. Sometimes certain brands or sizes are out but I've never gone to the store through this and not found milk or flour or sugar or anything else.
Very cool way to make bread! Love the new place btw, those colours you're going to be using in your new kitchen look great as well btw. I'm glad you, Mrs. B and the kids are all happy and healthy :) Love you guys!!
Hello barry, would you like to try making Carlota de limon? It is a no bake dessert made with condensed milk, evaporated milk and lime or lemon juice which sets it like a custard. Then layered between cookies. I havent tried it out yet but it looks like a fun and easy thing to try!
You can cook pancakes on a tin using a candle for the heat and the base as the pan! All you need to do is remove the lid from the tin, create some suitable holes in the sides of the tin so air can get to the candle, turn the tin upside down over a lit tealight candle, allow the tin to heat up, put a tiny blob of butter on top of the can, allow it to melt and then you can pour the pancake batter onto the top of the can. Sadly you can't flip these pancakes but they still taste incredible!
Washing machines in the kitchen is only popular here in NZ for studio/1br apartments. My apartment had a washing machine/dryer closet in the main bathroom, but yeah its normal here to have a seperate utility room, or else in the garage
I grew up in the Pacific North Wet ( no, I did not forget the 'S', If you ever spend some time there you'll understand why I call it that) of The USA. I lived in farming town with a Lumber Mill. This was a predominantly Scandahoovian (Improper term for Americans of Scandinavian ancestry) community. There was a recipe (sadly, Lost now) for Lumber Mill Bread. This was always baked in 3 lb Coffee Cans. The recipe included SAWDUST. The reason for that was never clear. Perhaps it was about making what flour was available stretch farther. Love your show!
I understand a lot of people used sawdust to pack out flour to add more bulk to things during WW2 and earlier, especially when food was hard to come by.
Restaurant name Christies in St Peter Port on Guernsey serves individual loaves like this but cooked in 4 inch plant pots with the taper helping to release the bread.
In America, clothes washers make more sense in the bathroom than kitchen, though are typically in the garage or a closet/room specifically set aside for a washer, dryer and perhaps a table or shelves. We call it the laundry closet or laundry room.
In North America it's very common to have your washer and dryer upstairs in a closet, a laundry room, or bathroom, closer to where the bedrooms are to ease the problem of trekking up and down the stairs with loads of laundry!
Here in Norway some houses/apartments have the washing machine in the kitchen, some in the bathroom and some have their own little room for washing machine, dryer, laundry etc. I think the little room that's specifically for laundry is more common in houses, although my grandma's house - which is pretty old and has never been renovated unless something was broken - has the washer and dryer in the kitchen. My parent's house, cabin and vacation apartment have their own little room for the washer and dryer. I'veived in one apartment that had a washer in the kitchen, one that had an extra room with washer and dryer, one that had the washer in the bathroom and my current apartment has washer and dryer in the bathroom. The thing about them being in the bathroom is; here in Norway there's a requirement of having a certain type of floor in the room where the washing machine is (Germany doesn't have that, idk about other countries). It has to be a linoleum floor or tiles or something, something that's "waterproof" (I don't know what else to call it😂 and idk what the reason for this requirement is- and if this isn't correct information, let me know😂 it's just what I've been told😂). And most bathrooms have that type of floor anyway, whereas most kitchen don't, so I guess it's easier to just put it in the bathroom. But it also depends on the space in the house or apartment. The apartment I lived in that had it in the kitchen and my grandma's house where isn't also in the kitchen both have pretty small bathrooms, where there's just no space for a washer/dryer.
Yess other Norwegian fans!! I havent heard about that rule no? But I just rent small crappy places, I have yet to own and pay for fixing my own bathroom. I grew up in an average apartment, no room for a washing machine in the bathroom, so people either had washing machines in the kitchen, or just the shared ones in the basement. The 3 last places I have lived its been in the bathroom. More quiet that way, HOW do you deal with the noise?! The cat wasnt too happy about that, she told the washing machine off several times!! Didnt listen to her and just kept going, so she'd come to me and complain!
@@TheVerosyv I only heard about that rule a few years ago when my mom talked with a plumber in germany about it because there is no such rule there but for all I know it could be a very old rule 🤷🏻♀️ I've only heard it that one time, but since they own 2 properties in Norway I just assumed it was correct😂 in the apartment I lived in the noise from the washing machine itself wasn't that bad.... but there was one cabinet with glasses... which was made of glass... the shelves were literally glass. The ONLY cabinet with glass shelfs (and also the only cabinet you could use for glasses, plates etc) and all the things that could easily break was in there. Mostly glasses and plates. That made so much noise once the washing machine started going really fast😩 we always checked on it multiple times because it legitimately sounded like it would break at any moment. We were thinking about some things to do to fix it, but then the landlord turned out to be an ass and kicked us out after just one month of living there (I mean, we had one month to find a new apartment, so two months in total.. but he sent me the email were he canceled our rent contract thingy after just one month🙄) and the one in my grandma's house doesn't make a lot of noise honestly. But it's also pretty new I think. The old once did definitely make noise, although the worst noise was the noise the dryer made when it was done. Normally I wouldn't say that an appliance can scream..... but that one SCREAMED 😂
yeah my washing machine is in my bathroom. there is a sink which you hook your washing machine tube to so ... well ... it can uh empty itself. i am curious now, do you have hard ports for your machine ? where does it empty itself ? feels a bit like i am asking how your washing machine poops.
Could you try an "alternatives" video. There are lots of things we cant get in supermarkets just now and some alternatives would be nice, for example flour is scarce, as are eggs in some places and even some places (my local asda) you struggle to get fresh veg. So some recipes that might normally need this stuff, see if it can be changed up to use alternatives like would a recipie work as well with tinned veg. In regards to specific recipes I dont really have any...but I figure the community could have some cracking ideas x
Heres hoping after the kitchen is finished, the lockdown is over so Ashens can come over and create horrific foods in there with you using expired products that he found.
I loved the idea at the end of putting the left over bread in a muffin tin to bake rolls 😋 I’m going to try the tin thing and the muffin tin thing too 😊
Here in Belgium it depends where the drain pipes are for the washing machine, most have it in their bathroom but in my previous house it was in the garage/ stock room
Barry, I have an idea for you to potentially try 1 day- creating your own custom smokey barbecue sauce, or potentially even going so far as a full ranch inspired burger or similar. You do have a genuine smoker after all...
Looks awesome. You really should consider getting an instant pot. It would make a great new series but it's also amazing. You can make chicken, burgers, ham, cakes, eggs, etc so many amazing things. It's one of the best things I ever got and I use it almost daily. I think you and your family would too. I have found a few TH-camrs who do instant pot recipe's but they are not as enjoyable to watch as you and your family are. If would could get one and start a new series I would be so happy. I promise you will not be disappointed 😉
@Jaime Downie, I 100% agree that the IP is amazing. It took me a long time to jump on the bandwagon but I'm so glad I did. Same thing with the air fryer. Those are two "gadgets" I can't live without these days. Makes life SOOOOOOOOO much easier. I'd love to see Barry do a new series with them both!!
I have got a bread recipe here, just never use it! Really should... one of those gadgets that I thought I would use but always prefer to use the hands, may have to give it a whizz!
Laundry in a kitchen or bathroom: if you don't have space for a laundry room then the washer has to go in a room with plumbing, that's either a kitchen or a bathroom. It's really that simple. Which of those rooms has more space is kind of the determination. From what I've seen, if there's a space in the kitchen it's more likely to be a dishwasher than a clothes washer.
There's actually a company here in the States that sells canned bread, and while the texture is a little off, it's actually good bread. It's a Boston style brown bread, made by a company called B&M

Same in the UK generally. Although it tends to be in the kitchen. In Barry's case I can see the issue with that, cus it would disrupt recording.
My life is not complete without Wagamama's vegan steamed buns
i will never be happy until i have a mr bean in my kitchen
Aussies have been cooking stuff in tins for may years. We call it a "billy" Good on ya mate lol
A billy? That’s amazing
isn't that a baby kangaroo?
@@CookingWithCows thats a joey
I've never heard of using a billy for bread, only for heating water, making tea/coffee, maybe heating soup? I want to try this and maybe make it like a pull-apart loaf :)
We have a tinned bread in the states called brown bread, it's very popular in New England - it's kind of molasses-y and spicy
I've not seen flour at my local shop for 3 weeks now. I am running a little low on baking goods but I did buy Greek yogurt to try the 3 ingredient bagels. Wish me luck and stay safe x
That’s awesome! Normal yoghurt does work too it is just more tangy and less creamy
Love this, hope you and the family are alright, Mrs Barry still with the NHS?
I think she was working at the school, not sure tho
I always have a chuckle when you pull out the wrap master, best accent for someone who owns one to have!!
Having you in a temporary kitchen is kind of fitting during this pandemic. Thanks for the videos.
I have been doing this for a few weeks now. Large tomato sauce tins are great for making hamburger buns. Thanks for the idea Barry.
Looking forwrd to seeing the new kitchen in your videos once it's finished! Will there be a new Giant Food project to christen the new kitchen with?
Love the sound of you all chewing down on that first bite in tandem... Keep up the good work Barry and fam and keep safe x
It would be interesting to see the progress of your new to be kitchen.
Bread looked gooooooood crushy mmmm
yeah my washing machine is in my bathroom. there is a sink which you hook your washing machine tube to so ... well ... it can uh empty itself.
i am curious now, do you have hard ports for your machine ? where does it empty itself ? feels a bit like i am asking how your washing machine poops.
I have seen really small apartments here in the US have washer/dryer stacked in really small apartments...like New York City tiny apartment.
Hey Barry I have some star and round shaped long tins with removable lids on both sides but don't know what to bake in them
So glad you've gotten your dream house. I love it already, can see why you've moved. Best of luck with it!
That's a nice little convection oven. Way nicer than mine. You'd be amazed what you can do with those.
Hi Barry glad to see you are all well and safe just wanted to know if this would work with gluten free bread flour ?
Could you try an "alternatives" video. There are lots of things we cant get in supermarkets just now and some alternatives would be nice, for example flour is scarce, as are eggs in some places and even some places (my local asda) you struggle to get fresh veg. So some recipes that might normally need this stuff, see if it can be changed up to use alternatives like would a recipie work as well with tinned veg. In regards to specific recipes I dont really have any...but I figure the community could have some cracking ideas x
Great idea
Heres hoping after the kitchen is finished, the lockdown is over so Ashens can come over and create horrific foods in there with you using expired products that he found.
I love that tip snuck in at the end! Now I want to bake bread rolls in a muffin tray.
Super. Love substitutes and make do videos as we are all doing this now! Thanks for the update!
i love it!
stay safe mate, and thank you.
@@brandyfreeman4098 agreed I use my air fryer all the time too. Best things ever and such a time saver
A very good recipe. I personally use a bread machine 🍞🍞Makes life very simple
I have got a bread recipe here, just never use it! Really should... one of those gadgets that I thought I would use but always prefer to use the hands, may have to give it a whizz!
Great video, Barry! Can't wait to see the new kitchen!
Wow they’re getting so big so fast from when I first starting watching you and they were so so small, time really flies
That Mr. Bean cutout cracks me up. I am a huge fan of Mr. Bean and my grandpa was also a fan
I have a lovely can opener that takes the top off without leaving a lip and no sharp edges. You can even use the top as a lid.
*[Obligatory Squidward Canned Bread Quote]*
I saw a crock pot on your counter, do you ever use an instant pot?
Is that a washing machine? For laundry? Wow, that is kludged. 😋 Can't wait to see the eventual finished product!
5:44 - It's not?
