Did you have a subpanel or maybe GFCI outlets somewhere between your breaker box and kitchen? The answer should have been to flip a breaker for sure, but I saw the panel you showed was okay.
Plugging in something that draws enough current to need a 13 A fuse will burn a fuse with a max load of 3 A, it's just a question if it's a fast or slow burning fuse that determines how soon the fuse burns when the current passes that threshold.
Poor Mrs Barry. You can see the horror in her eyes that she is this close to having her dream home and along comes another grilled cheese sandwich maker.
The funniest bit for me is him getting the frying pan out for the onions, when he could have easily used that to heat up the fully cooked hotdogs he bought. Both the Herta and Unearthed are safe to eat straight from the packet. No idea why he thought they were semi-cooked or raw. Flicking matches at the buns would have done a better job of toasting them. I love these videos but it's almost always not about how bad the gadget is, it's about how Barry follows the instructions to the letter, but gets confused by the food.
Mrs Barry's horror at the loss of electrical power meaning no washing machine, "and I can't even go to my mum's", I was totally empathising with you at that point Mrs Barry, no hot water, fine, no cooker, that can be worked around, no fridge freezer, just keep the door shut and eat everything in 2 days, Hand washing clothes for 4 people in a sink that is the size of a large mixing bowl.. Okay, I have a HUGE sneaky suspicion that this was used! I think we might have to buy it from the retailer. Everything tells me that this was a faulty product from the get-go.
it was 100% used, the white powdery stuff was from a label they ripped off, the bottom flaps had clear marks they had been previously opened and the rest of the bag being ripped and only one piece of polystyrene
100% used. No way in heck that was new. If it was, that ain't a £50 product with that shoddy packaging. They obviously opened it, then sold it cus it was faulty
LordDragox412 You *can* do that, but a tripped breaker is usually a sign that there’s something wrong with your wiring, or with the device you’ve got plugged in, doesn’t it? Why mess around when it’s just for a video that you can do later (if at all) when things are sorted?
"This thing blows all circuits it touches. Let's keep plugging it in!" good work Honestly, at least the other failure gadgets (esp the ones that caught fire) tended to stay self-contained. Whereas with this one, when it fails it takes the entire house down with it
@Lassi Kinnunen yes UK plugs do. But if it pulled more than the fuse is rated for then the fuse should blow rather than trip one of the circuit breakers. A 13A fuse (which is should have installed) is enough for a 2kw fan heater though, so should be plenty for something like this. Possible that the entire circuit was overloaded but more likely some sort of internal fault with the product. Because it only had a 3A fuse in I'd expect that to blow long before a circuit breaker.
"Who opens a box like that" People who go in retail stores and either want to look at something or steal it because the picture and specs on the box aren't good enough for them.
I worked returns at Wal-Mart, and you'd be amazed the lengths ppl go through to get rid of faulty products. Some will buy a new more expensive item, take it home, open the box carefully (like from the bottom), switch the new with the cheaper old, then return it looking unopened. Usually saying they bought the wrong one, or something along those lines. Box looks unopened, so its taken back and sometimes put back on the shelf
@@Mike_Toulon Or in this case the previous owners of the toaster opened the box, tried it and it turns out it burned down their fuses as well and send it back like it was never used. 😁
Hey Barry. Just paused where you put the buns in for the first time. I will say the buns are bigger then the ones we have in the states. Seeing as it claims to be an American hotdog cooker it might be designed for the american style buns. Keep up the great content!

I suggest you buy a rcd plugin adapter (used for lawnmowers etc.) when testing these slightly dodgy gadgets. But made for a fun video though and those bratwurst looked amazing at the end!
For it to not trip a 3A fuse, I reckon it's going to be a leakage issue, like some corrosion bridging a live conductor or heating element and the metal casing.
Problem was when the unit was steaming inside water built up and caused RCD to trip as current was allowed to conduct between live and earth within the unit ....plugging it in to another socket on the other RCD ultimately results in the same ....once it partially dried out with lid up no path to earth = no tripping ....nothing to worry about RCDs are super sensitive only problem I see is the buns are obviously meant to be steamed ....nice looking hot dogs though ...love your videos keep up the great work 👍
OMG! This brings back memories! My mum used to work as a bus driver and once a year we would have a MASSIVE bake sale/junk sale and me and my mum would sell hot dogs from this big hotdog heater thingie with some crisps and a drink.
Very cool seeing the rest of the family! The top half of the machine seemed to work amazingly even if the bottom half wasn't so great. And seeing Smeg appliances always makes me giggle because of Red Dwarf.
Stuff on the cable was probably polystyrene packaging, looked like the previous owner had gone in from the bottom otherwise it'd be in the polybag. Hilarious that the first reaction to a loss of power was "what have you done", I've had machines kill my power but the fusebox has the flippy switch ones that trip the circuit instead of needing replaced if a newer house doesn't have those have a word with the electrician.
The chemicals in the electrical cable often react with the polystyrene foam packaging. That's what the crusty stuff was on the cable, polystyrene that had stuck to it.
Um maybe next time You get a gadget on eBay buy one of those plug in circuit breakers (like they use for lawnmowers etc). That'll blow before the house. Funny though (cos it wasn't me 😁)
@@Okurka. Yes they do. But sometimes a surge may not be long enough in duration as to blow the plug fuse. This is one such case (a lawn mower quickly cutting an electrical cable is another where the blade may only cause a short circuit for a fraction of a second) RCDs and MCB circuit breakers react quicker than wire fuses.
Living in the American midwest, we eat alot if hotdogs....american hotdogs and English hot dogs are not the same (i visited a few years back) Most of our hotdogs are precooked (size differs too)...you can get raw but, it's not as popular. Bun sizes make a difference (brats/hotdog buns), 4 small hotdog buns will fit. Also, I had a bad feeling when you unboxed it. The cord, having the white on it, is not normal and the way it was packaged seemed wrong. Ive had cookers similar to that trip the breaker. With all the appliances in that room, the one extra product might have overloaded the system. My kitchen has breaker switches for specific appliances, to remedy overloading (most housesI've lived in did this, except the trailers) American products can be temperamental (although I'm not sure if its an American product or just for cooking American style hotdogs) when products are marked for specific food, you can never be sure how they will work. We had a tiny tabletop hotdog cart, it lasted a few uses then shorted out...burning the cord. (And melting the outlit)
08:45 you can clearly see that one side of the consumer unit is tripped. The dodgy hot dog heater is tripping the RCD on it. Just switch them back on and bin the dodgy hot dog thing.
My Guess is that It was used and came to the original seller with the fuse damaged and they put a 3amp fuse in it thinking it is considered a small appliance. I think if you replace the fuse with the spesified 13 amp fuse it will work and stop tripping your outlets.
Do you think maybe whoever had it changed the plug from American 2 pin to 3 pin, that is why it's blowing the sockets?! I was wandering why it didn't have a US plug. I did see on those they have a 210 watt power. Maybe reason why.
My D.H. and I love the outside burnt. 😀 At the same time they probably used it and opened and closed by the bottom. I would definitely give the seller a negative review.

It's ironic isn't it? He needs to complete the TH-cam video by potentially starting an electric kitchen fire to pay for his electricity bill.
When Barry short circuits the house from a gadget hahahaha
Problem was when the unit was steaming inside water built up and caused RCD to trip as current was allowed to conduct between live and earth within the unit
....plugging it in to another socket on the other RCD ultimately results in the same ....once it partially dried out with lid up no path to earth = no tripping ....nothing to worry about RCDs are super sensitive only problem I see is the buns are obviously meant to be steamed ....nice looking hot dogs though ...love your videos keep up the great work 👍
Hi Barry! Maybe consider using a power surge protector when using the gadgets in future! It will prevent anything like this
OMG! This brings back memories! My mum used to work as a bus driver and once a year we would have a MASSIVE bake sale/junk sale and me and my mum would sell hot dogs from this big hotdog heater thingie with some crisps and a drink.
The white stuff on the power cord is Polystyrene from the packaging. The plastic that covers the power lead reacts to the Styrene
Very cool seeing the rest of the family! The top half of the machine seemed to work amazingly even if the bottom half wasn't so great. And seeing Smeg appliances always makes me giggle because of Red Dwarf.
Mrs Barry: Washing Machine, burning smell
Barry: W O U L D Y O U L I K E A H O T D O G
How long before Mrs Barry stops you from using anything electrical?
You say it's for warming bread but then expect to cook in it smh
Decreasing the Current of the fuse (Amps) means the resistance of the circuit goes up 😬
Stuff on the cable was probably polystyrene packaging, looked like the previous owner had gone in from the bottom otherwise it'd be in the polybag.
Hilarious that the first reaction to a loss of power was "what have you done", I've had machines kill my power but the fusebox has the flippy switch ones that trip the circuit instead of needing replaced if a newer house doesn't have those have a word with the electrician.
Electrician comes- so what happened
Barry- uhhh I was making hotdogs
The chemicals in the electrical cable often react with the polystyrene foam packaging. That's what the crusty stuff was on the cable, polystyrene that had stuck to it.
Um maybe next time
You get a gadget on eBay buy one of those plug in circuit breakers (like they use for lawnmowers etc).
It may or may not trip first. In my experience they'll both go (if we're talking about RCDs).
"quite small rolls" My dude.. I've been being 'Murican wrong my whole life apparently
08:45 you can clearly see that one side of the consumer unit is tripped. The dodgy hot dog heater is tripping the RCD on it. Just switch them back on and bin the dodgy hot dog thing.
Surge protector might be a good investment going forward sir.
A surge protector is to protect devices from external power surges, wouldn’t have done anything in this case.
My Guess is that It was used and came to the original seller with the fuse damaged and they put a 3amp fuse in it thinking it is considered a small appliance. I think if you replace the fuse with the spesified 13 amp fuse it will work and stop tripping your outlets.
not sure who's more skeptical, Mrs Barry or Homer watching you with his arms crossed LOL
Barry's next lifesize figure (for focussing the camera) needs to be a firefighter!
the white on the cord, could be residue from label, loads of electronics comes with warnings etc. on a label around the cord.
It blows out every socket? Brilliant!
