I loved Lyman as Opal. The one and only. Best part of my childhood was watching her during the week on school breaks as Opal and on the weekend on “Mamma’s Family” as Naomi as she did both roles simultaneously for years. The second Opal, Jill Larson, went to high school with the real Opal.
Lyman only did both roles in 1983. She was not asked back to AMC because of difficulty with her behind the scenes. She expresses desire to return and was told no. “MF” had just ended and she could have returned, but was denied.
I always thought Liza (Marcy Walker) and Opal (Dorothy Lyman) looked a lot alike to be mother and daughter-but I do believe the right person was cast to be Jenny so I wouldn’t trade Kim Delaney for the world.
I missed out on this part of All My Children. I did see when Opal and Jenny first came to town. Liza was so horrid to Jenny and I never felt she got her comeuppance. I know Tad dished it out to her but still her malice to Jenny . . . well, I agree with other posts that this period on AMC was very well written and very well cast.
I think there was a lot of animosity between those two. As I recall, Lyman was even writing some of her own lines. Don't know if she would have been the star because she and Lucci played largely different characters. This part certainly opened doors for Lyman inducing her to leave the show.
Debbi Morgan left the show because it revolved around Lucci. And it doesn't take a genius to figure out why Kate Collins left after Natalie became the main draw.
@@makeittrue From what I heard she left the show because she wanted to concentrate more on doing Mama's Family, she was doing both shows around the same time commuting on plane coast to coast given that Mama's was taped in L.A.The plane commute was becoming very strenuous for her at the time.
Oh my gosh, I think it still is. I used it in a comment and the comment immediately dissappeared! Was just saying how Marian could have turned around and called him the same thing!
@@roddycurt9139 Don't forget Bill Bell (RIP). They were brilliant in their craft because they learned from Irna Phillips. I told UK Soap Fans how US Soaps got their start and they found it very interesting. When Coronation Street debuted it was based on The Novel Saturday Night & Sunday Morning by Allen Sillitoe. Tony Warren had to fight tooth and nail to get it on the air but he believed in the show and the rest is History.
When soaps were great!! Must watch!!!

Dorothy and Jill were born and raised in the Twin Cities, MN.
Instead of Tad attempting to blackmail Marian, why didn't he just sell the damn gold link chain around his neck. Tad is cute, but dumb as hell.

@@travisjames3517 oh wow! I didn’t know that she wanted to return and had behind the scenes issues.
@@PiggyPickem Yes. She said she would return and was told a firm no.
OMG...Marian Colby..I LOVED HER. Liza too..Marcy Walker was so good. And Dorothy Lyman as Opal(FABULOUS)..man..the glory days of soaps.
Mark & Erica were so great. He really brought out the humanity & family importance out of her. And Mona was terrific too.
Loved Dorothy Lymon as OPAL GARDNER!
dovasi The one and only Opal!
@@rockyracoon3233 The other Opal was so different than the way Lyman played her.
UGH!!!The way Tad broke off that gold chain...he's a classless CAD! Can't stand him!!
I still remember when she was interviewed for People Magazine.

I thought I was the only person who saw the resemblance between Marcy Walker and Dorothy Lyman. Good eye. 👌
In The UK The Father/Son Team of Frank/Chris Tate on Emmerdale back in the day was brilliant. They looked so much like each other.

Marcy Walker was great as Liza!
That Opal was crazy! :)
I'm wondering if Lyman stayed with the show if she would've ended up its star as opposed to Susan Lucci.
