    Good job showing the home owner how to swap a coil. As a dealer tech I would like to share a couple service bulletins. Echo wants dealers to check the ground between the coil laminations and engine block to make sure there is a good path back to the module. Apparently Echo has been asked to make a lot of coil claims on units that were actually good and just had a bad ground. The service bulletin calls for less than .2 ohms resistance. Also, depending on the model year, the srm225 used two different style coils. The original gray one and the digital blue one. That digital coil might actually have a built in spark advance curve.

      That's interesting, especially the built-in timing advance. As always, I appreciate it when you guys expand on a video in the comments. It makes us all a little smarter 👍

    I bought an in line tester after seeing how easy it would have been to diagnose my chain saw that ended up having a bad coil! Wish I saw this before! Thank you .

    Good call on disconnecting the kill wire first. So many coils get changed when the problem is a bad switch. Nice job, Bill. Glad it wasn't the carburetor!

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not always easy to get to, but if you go after the coil, you are already there to test the rest of it before going after the coil.
      It's always the carb, except when it's not. 😆

    I never had to swap out a coil on a Echo but when Stihl came out with the 4-mix stuff there was a pile of coils and cams at the saw shop that went bad but that was a while back and I've been out of the loop since then too. Happy Thanksgiving, Palley! Now we've got to crawl back up on the wagon from what we did to the table setting(s).

      I am waiting on a Stihl coil myself, I see a hundred carbs for every coil, but it happens 🙂
      Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. We had "to-go" food this year 🙄🤣

      That was years ago when my pal that has his own shop was running the saw shop at the ACE. He had a stack of both. I don't think the 4-mix had been out that long but they were also having a lot of trouble with their concrete saws too. We had 'to go' food too and it sure WENT, Palley! Back on the wagon again now. Nice while it lasted.@@GuysPlayingWithTools

      It's my Toots birthday on the 27thy. My class-A is dead so she hauled me up to the Dollar General to get her something. She goes to town once a week for grub and I stay here because I only slow her down. I got her some odds and ends and we had the feed and her birthday party at the same time. I need to get my license renewed and will one day, maybe, but I like being hauled around. After a lifetime of doing it myself it's nice to be able to look out the shotgun window and not be on the verge of crashing. And the fat and sassy ones are the happy ones. Usually the sour ones are boney. I was married to one for 23 years.@@GuysPlayingWithTools

    My screws are broken off in the crankshaft enough to get them out but I've got 5 trimmers all parts tuned up except ignition coils so first one i checked today the screws broke off.

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The ends usually come out easy when they break. If anything is still sticking out, you can use a dremel to make a flathead slot to take them out

    here are some suggestions: give audio or visual info of tools and part numbers , eg, what size socket did you use, what is the echo part # of tbe ignition coil. Also, you might mention how tbe viewer can test his coil wirhout the soark gadget. Most probably have a volrmeter with resistance setting. What are the resistance specs for the coil? Intersti g thing, tour video popped up first.

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am trying to be a little better about mentioning less common tool sizes, everybody has sockets but if they are buying a single torx, it's good to let them know which one.
      I appreciate the suggestions. I worry about talking too much or going into details people don't care about, I will add a few more details when doing something like this next time.

    I have question but no spark tester . I took the spark plug out of a GT echo trimmer connected the plug to the coil and test the plug against the metal frame and there was no spark . So I got brave and held plug in my hand I could feel very little spark . Does these mean I need a coil ?

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a tough one. You are right in assuming you would get a pretty good shock, but with plastic handles on the machine, you might have only been slightly grounded and without ground you wouldn't get nearly as much of a shock as you would holding the metal shaft.
      If you have a local auto parts store, take it there. It's a quick test, and most will let you borrow a spark tester. If it doesn't have a new plug, get one while you are there, old plugs can make 2 strokes hard to start.

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools

      @willienunez5280 Good call! I would clear it out and make sure airflow through the case is good, and replace the plug, and see if anything changes. If nothing changes, it's going to be the coil 95% of the time after that. Let me know how it goes 🙂

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @KenWoodProduction You didn't say if you disconnected at the coil or switch, but if it's at the switch, replace it, and you're good. If you disconnected it at the coil, the wire is grounding along the way, so replace the wire. I would suggest also making sure the switch is ok. Once it's apart, it's an easy replacement. 👍

      @KenWoodProduction Great, look for breaks in the wire insulation, I see it all the time on older machines. You can use any wire that's the right guage and has reasonably flexible insulation. Let me know, I like hearing success stories 🙂

      @@GuysPlayingWithTools Update: took the “throttle arm” apart.:kill switch seems ok…followed the wire that i disconnected from the coil and didn’t see anything wrong with wire..no tears…the connector for the wire that goes on coil looked dirty so sprayed carb cleaner on that. • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @KenWoodProduction If you are getting spark now, it's possible something was touching, and you took care of it. If you are getting a good spark, the coil might be OK. It sounded a lot like a grounded wire when you described it.
