Cambodia: the New Battleground in the U.S.-China Power Struggle

  • In this video, we explore the intricate dynamics of Cambodia's strategic role in the ongoing rivalry between the U.S. and China. The recent visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to Cambodia has put this small Southeast Asian nation in the spotlight, highlighting its geopolitical significance and the complex interplay of international relations.
We start by examining the historical context of Cambodia's political landscape, focusing on its long-standing relationship with China. From the Cold War era and the brutal Khmer Rouge regime to the significant support from China during turbulent times, we explore how Cambodia became one of China's closest allies through economic investments and strategic partnerships.
Next, we discuss Cambodia's geographical importance. Positioned at a crucial intersection of global maritime routes, Cambodia's proximity to the South China Sea makes it a key player in regional stability. We highlight the contentious Ream Naval Base, which has been a point of concern for the U.S. due to potential Chinese military use, and how this base fits into the broader geopolitical chessboard.
We also cover the economic ties and influence between Cambodia and China. Chinese investments in infrastructure, real estate, and trade have deepened Cambodia's economic dependence on China, affecting its sovereignty and policy decisions. This relationship has significant implications for Cambodia's internal and external political dynamics.
Human rights issues are another critical area we address. The U.S. has criticized Cambodia's human rights record, particularly the suppression of political dissidents and lack of political freedom. These issues have strained U.S.-Cambodia relations and added another layer of complexity to the country's foreign policy.
Finally, we look at the future outlook and potential shifts in Cambodia's foreign policy under the new leadership of Hun Manet. With increased U.S. engagement, there might be opportunities for Cambodia to balance its relations with both superpowers, impacting regional stability in Southeast Asia.

It's not that the US didn't want to work with Cambodia, but it's because Cambodia had already picked a side that was opposed to US interests. Under Hun Sen Cambodia was very much under the influence of Vietnam which didn't have good relations with the US. It was only when Vietnam started having disputes with China that Vietnam-US relations started to get better. But at that same time Hun Sen began to rely on China for support hoping to throw off Vietnamese influence.

Your video provides a compelling analysis of the geopolitical significance of Cambodia and China. I share your concerns, particularly regarding the escalating tension between China and the USA, which inevitably impacts the entire globe. The impending clash between democracy and autocracy seems unavoidable, with Southeast Asia poised as the initial battleground due to China's burgeoning economic power and regional influence.
China's ascent to become the world's most powerful country appears unstoppable, causing apprehension not only for America but for the entire democratic world. A major issue is China's claim over the Spratly Islands, which the international community believes should remain international maritime zones, free from national claims and military bases. Additionally, Taiwan remains a critical flashpoint, embodying the direct clash of ideologies between democracy and autocracy, potentially leading to a larger conflict.
Southeast Asia is precariously positioned, potentially on the brink of a significant conflict. While America and Western nations have employed relatively subtle strategic maneuvers, China has adopted a more aggressive approach, leveraging economic vulnerabilities to draw countries like Cambodia into its geopolitical sphere. Over the past 30 years, Cambodia has been heavily influenced by China, almost akin to a stray dog being adopted.
In my view, the loyalty of Cambodia's leaders is predictable in this context, given the economic dependencies and strategic alignments with China. As the famous principle suggests, "economics always dictates politics."...

Cambodia as a nation since the French colonization, only has a short time of peace. In this 21st century, Cambodia government has to walk a balancing act between the two superpowers for the benefit of its people, regional stability and global peace. I hope history doesn’t repeat itself like the last Cold War. With God blessing, Cambodia will be prosper and peaceful.

China-Cambodia friendships can be traced back to the 11th century when the US wasn’t born yet. China sent the Chinese army to assist Cambodia fighting against the powerful Champa invasions Cambodia. The Khmer King Jayavarman VII of Cambodia carved the picture of the Chinese army on the bas-reliefs of the wall of the Bayon temple in Cambodia. In 1296, the Chinese Yuan diplomat Zhou Daguan paid a visit to Cambodia thanking Cambodia for not killing the 2 Yuan Mongol general who leading 1000 Mongols cavaliers trying to invade Cambodia, but failed and they were captured by Cambodia. Zhou Daguan wrote a book Customs of Cambodia which was translated in 5 languages.

It’s easy and it’s not too late for the US to compete with China in Cambodia and only if America is willing to do it. First of all, Cambodia is in the process of rebuilding itself after year zero, and thus Cambodia is in need of financial support and much foreign direct investment. The US has see this and totally understand about this but instead of increasing FDI and offering financial support to Cambodia, the US keeps putting pressure on Cambodia regarding human rights and democracy issues while ignoring the very same issues if not worse to Cambodian communist states neighboring countries. Cambodia see this kind of behavior from the US along with their past experiences in the 70’ Cambodia has no choice but to turn to other country that is willing to help Cambodia. The US can start pouring FDI and financial support into Cambodia to counter Chinese influence in Cambodia and help keep Cambodia as a neutral state in the region. Secondly, Cambodia is also in need of upgrading and modernizing its military capabilities and is in much need of support and security guarantees from a major power player in the region for many reasons, especially its national security and defense. America has not done anything significantly to this end, instead it keeps putting arm embargo on the Kingdom. Again, Cambodia has no choice but to seek other major powers for help and support. However , the time is not too late for the US to step in on this field as well. Action speak louder than words, every Asian do not like lips service neither nor we do like bullying.

Here’s a contrarian perspective but if American teamed up with China and Russia instead trying to dominate them would we be much better off? Americans would be much better off in terms of having affordable goods, not messing up the dollar as the world reserve currency (stupid sanctions), and not having inflation etc. Our government is in cahoots with giant corporations, this country lost our democracy to the oligarchy. It’s sad what we have become.

Cambodia, since 1979,after Vietnam invasion, has never been an independent country,up to the present days. Vietnam has been in control of Cambodia, ever since. Vietnam installed its puppet, governments”after their invasion of Cambodia. Cambodia cannot independently makes their own decision, anyone challenged their policy, will be arrested or disappeared from public. Those who knew and understood Vietnam’s political plans over Cambodia, tend to keep their mouth shut, for fear of arrest and brutal punishments

Your video and narrative is missing some true history. Cambodian is the peace lover people even her bitter history. In brief after France colony, King Sihanouk brought peace and prosperity to the whole country from 1955-1970 until the USA bombed Cambodia on pretext of North Vietnamese troops used Cambodia border to fought South Vietnam back by USA and the cold war period. The USA bombed everywhere creating Khmer Rogue and made it came to power due to USA bombed all farming lands. Khmer Rogue anger Vietnam by war due to both countries history and Vietnam revenge and defeat Khmer rogue in 1979 as well as saved Cambodian from the killing field. If going deep into the root cause, Vietnam and the USA created unstable Cambodia country in 1970s. But Cambodian people always like the USA and Western however they ignored, so China understand the real needs of Cambodian and support in action, not political gains.
BRI has helped many countries around the world, BRI don't bring money and weapons but the BRI bring development. This is why China is recognising throughout the whole world.
