I always loved Emily - the character brought an air of respectability to the show - something lacking in all soaps now - it would seem being respectable is bad tally - i tend to disagree these shows should show all aspects of life not just the trash
Part of the problem I think is that with so much competition for viewers, the soaps have become increasingly sensationalist and unrealistic. it has been argued that society has changed so much that coronation Street doesn't really have much of a long term future. The whole premise that it was based on doesn't really exist anymore in society. The characters which underpinned it so well in its heyday belong to an era which has passed.
Characters like Emily and Mavis did very little for me as a viewer. These ladies always seemed to be on the verge of having a breakdown over anything AND everything. Highly strung, overly emotional and way too sensitive, it was an effort to watch storylines where they were the main focus. Both belong to the past. In the same way that other characters like Albert Tatlock and Ena Sharples belong to a time long ago
Mavis was like that - but not Emily. I liked Emily. She was a great character - I especially liked her scenes with Spider - or "Geoffrey" as she always called him. I really loved the scene where she was playing the didgeridoo! That was really super!
