I never watch 'Coronation Street' now but did back in 1970 and despite the houses not being built full scale I adored the first brick built set, especially loved the gap in the row of houses (where number 7 had once stood), loved the park bench in the gap, I think the faded paint and broken windows in the viaduct added something to the feel of the whole Street, and a gap in the row made the street unique. Is there anyone else who loved the first brick built set?
@@johntomlinson6849 yes, I can imagine it was, I read somewhere once you'd have had to have been a match stick man to have lived in one of the houses! I remember there was no chimneys on the roof, but still my favourite outdoor set. Soaps were real family shows then, was allowed to watch it religiously then, also loved 'Emmerdale Farm', but 'Crossroads' was my favourite of the three soaps. Loved Noele Gordon's Meg Richardson, and the horizontal and vertical closing credits, (achieved by using two ATV cameras). Lovely to hear you have seen the 'Coronation Street' outdoor set via the grape street gates.
16:03 - 16:11 you can see the old grape street set above the bonded warehouse, top right and the quay street set under construction below the bonded warehouse. so the film was taken in 1981
I came across these old 1960-1970's episodes on TH-cam and its absolute gold. Today's soaps are so ridiculous (evil twins, possession, everyone is super rich and glamorous). I didn't grow up in GB, but I know all these characters in my hometown. Plus, the HUMOR of these episodes: Ena/Elsie slanging matches, The Ogdens, the snarky Mike Baldwin, the loudmouth Vera, etc. just brilliant!
Hi, yes spot on - for me the very best years were up to the end of 1970, it was very nearly as good until 1984, still excellent in parts until 1997, and mostly rubbish since, with moments of greatness of course, usually involving Blanche. It's so great that more and more of the old episodes have been turning up here on TH-cam, I've been watching the 1970 ones - I can watch twenty in a row and the time just flies by - such brilliance - drama and humour, all character driven. There are some brilliant actors in it now, but the writing is no good any more.

been waiting for this on youtube for ages, thanks for posting odd that on the image of archie street at 8:43 the 3rd house from the shop is lighter given that's technically number 9 which has brighter stone cladding
That piece of music at 22:00 is Einaudi. My wifes favourite music. It brings a tear to my eyes hearing it being played in a show that has been in my heart for nearly 40 years
I stopped watching it 10 yrs ago as it seemed to me (in my opinion) to lose its charm. The question the creative team should be asking is....what would Tony do? Like at Disneyland when their creator and visionary passed away....... The team all said "what would Walt do?"
I agree, it's just not the same anymore, the feel and heart of all the past characters was there, even if corrie was having a poor period with bad storylines and characters you could still see and feel the golden years and it helped to still accept the show for what it once was, now with the new site it just feels very manufactured and false, it's definitely lost its heart and soul now its left granada.
Yes, the producers post-millennium definitely missed a trick: The tendency in the digital age has been to always try to pander to younger generations, but most of them no longer even bother to watch conventional TV. The real money is held by the older folks and they have a deep passion for notalgia - Corrie should have made them their target audience and left the fast-paced, over-sexualised, ulta-violent unrealistic nonsense to other programmes. Like pretty much everything in modern British life, Corrie used to be better. Much, much better.
Thanks for this, very interesting. Was lucky enough to get a tour round the old set in 2014 before it was bulldozed. Probably around that time i stopped watching it- load of rubbish now. Far too many characters , stupid storylines and most of all completely lost it's humour!
Agreed. I saw an episode once from the 1960s written by the playwright Jack Rosenthal -and it showed. Ever since then however it's been condescending crap
Everyone should welcome new changes within the new Coronation Street because scenes of suggested psychology is the way forward to contribute to society.
Kyle Wilcock. I think he means that this episode -" A Moving Story" will most likely be removed. That's what happens to most all TH-cam channels that play shows in their entirety. Sucks.
I feel the move could prove the death knell for the show. I've rarely watched since the tram crash, as I feel the stories have gone downhill. The new influx of characters hold no interest for me, and how much longer are the likes of Bill Roache, Anne Kirkbride, Eileen Derbyshire, Helen Worth, Sue Nicholls and Barbara Knox likely to continue? The veterans had their best storylines years ago.
Yes it was best years ago the story lines were good 👍 but now since they moved location years ago its not the same channel 4 the same woth HollyOaks great when it first came out even though they are still in the same area there is more voilence than ever in these tv shows they lost family values more than anything now
Interesting but sad to think they used to have some great actors and then you see the person that plays Tina is actually no different to her character, therefore being paid a wage just to be herself. No acting skills there.
I was born in 1960, the same year Corrie started.Grew up with Stan, Hilda, Annie, Albert, Elsie, Ena, Minnie et al. Now, thanks to woke, it's unwatchable. Anyway, thank for the memories.
Glad I have seen this, what a great moving story. May Coronation Street go on for many years to come. I still watch it even now.

Yes - me!! Saw it a few times through the grille in the gates on Grape Street: absolutely tiny!

I don’t watch it now sadly it lost its way. There was a time when I wouldn’t miss it but yeah all this change I suppose.
Wonderful documentary, I have been very lucky to have visited both sites, pure magic, can’t wait till covid is over and we can travel again
Thank you to whoever found this show in 1960s

wonder if they every figured out why they got a photo of the door
Corrie lost it's heart when it moved from Granada it's not been the same since.
r
It did lose it
I agree.

The best ever
Coronation street was superb for the first 30 years. Then it got silly with awful actors and dreadful storylines

IIRC they would later block it sometime soon as its ITV.com as they've did it with the Corrie/ED episodes in its entirety.
Sorry?

The most patronising pulp on British television
P.S Last time i checked the queen was the queen of the United Kingdom not just England as Tony Warren states. Makes my blood boil!

It's just an expression. He wasn't excluding other members of the UK
