@@Ann-vz8tz Sailor Moon is generally influential though. Calling something 'influenced' or 'derivative' is a value judgement and you're allowed to make value judgements in criticism. It did basically invent the idea that a super hero story could be ultra feminine without being a parody or considering that a joke and pushed the team concept in a way previous Shoujo super hero manga like Princess Knight (or even its direct predecessor Sailor V) hadn't. It wasn't doing anything Captain Marvel didn't do in the 1930s but it also repopularised younger teens as non-side kick superheroes in Japan and probably America as well since Power Pack was about the only time that had been tried again after all the other heroes got aged up. There's a lot of feedback across different country's animation and what you think of as 'anime' inspired or not is mostly just your opinion of anime and has little to do with anything else since most Japanese childrens shows never get subtitled or released abroad. Most people wouldn't call Superman's phone booth spinning costume switch a 'transformation sequence' in spite of the massive American influence on Japanese henshin heroes of which anime characters are just a small subset of and don't know about the Linda Carter Wonder Woman references in Sailor Moon. This is normal since no one has ever watched all media that exists and we all have to start somethere. To be honest a lot of people just use 'magical girl show' as a polite way of saying 'Sailor Moon Ripoff' with how so many female henshin heroes get mislabled as magical girls no matter how more they lean into Kamen Rider, Bubblegum Crisis or mecha musume pinup art for inspiration. You can't talk about Pretty Cure for example without noting that seasons 4 and 5 were a departure from the first three season's attempt to form a more unique franchise identity and a deliberate backwards move into a more Sailor Moon inspired direction. That the same move could be called a Super Sentai vs Kamen Rider move doesn't mean much so again; calling that inspiration or stealing is just a matter of politeness.
i dont understand the "transformations" part as copied from winx club. Like legit every magical girl series has transformations and if any of them might have stolen it from winx , then they have stolen it form sailor moon or whatever anime xD Some people just wanna shade. im glad how you pointed out its pretty ridiculous
Cardcaptor Sakura doesn't have transformations and Sailor Moon is mostly based on older American super heroes which also have them yet nobody accuses Max Steel of ripping off anime for some reason. Its not even a girl media thing since stuff gets accused of ripping off Pokemon far more than stuff gets accused of ripping off Sailor Moon.
because in the early 2000s when all these shows were airing none of us really knew about anime aside from a handful that made it worldwide, so we didn't know that magical girl was its own genre
@@Evibbles Mahou Shoujo is more of a genre in the sense that Westerns are a genre than how say Murder Mystery is a genre and while European shows like Winx Club and W.I.T.C.H. count there are plenty of Japanese shows like Mai Hime, Symphogear and Kill La Kill which get included incorrectly and ones like Little Witch Academia that get excluded incorrectly. Sailor Moon has transformations because its a Sentai show not because its a Magical Girl one. Its the makeup and dress up theme to the transformations that make them Magical Girl rather than regular Japanese Henshin Hero ones.
@@AC-dk4fp yes but my point is that you can't say one show is copying another show based purely on its most basic premise (in this case Magical Girl) because if that's the only similarities it shares then they are still completely separate shows. Regal Academy and Ever After High are often compared because both stripped to the bare bones are about a highschool of the descendants of fairytale characters, but you look any deeper and they aren't at all similar
@@Evibbles Two shows can be thematically similar on a deep level while having different character arcs and story structures. There's a difference between a complete copy and a modified copy. Taking simple facts about borrowed elements and sources as some kind of personal insult to the fandom can be as immature as insulting things on purpose. Intertextuality is key to how genres work you can't just use genre to excuse unoriginality. Copying should be a neutral issue.
Am I the only one who grew up with both W.I.T.C.H. and Winx Club and never considered them a rip-off of one another? The only similarity they had was about the group being magical girls and I was around 7 years old when I tought so.
Same I just recently bought the DVD’s for W.I.T.C.H. Season 1 I did have volume 1 but wanted all of them managed to find them and Winx club season 1 and 2 on dvd I grew up and loved these DVD’s my originals got stolen so had to find them again I mean I’m 25 and I still watch them they are like a life line to me.
I’m quite sure the reason EAH ended was because at the time Mattel had a deal with Disney to produce toys for them. But when Mattel came up with EAH, they felt like it’s a stab in the back because *only the big mouse company can make fairy tale media and merchandise!!!!* which is why they moved onto creating Descendants. Then internal drama in between, Mattel was pulled from producing toys and they went on to collaborate with Jakks Pacific. Disney and Mattel seem to have reconciled in recent years tho.
You do realize that EAH isn’t base on disney fairytale but brother Grimm who written original fairytales such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty etc and other authors such as Hans Christian Andersen who wrote little mermaid until Disney used their stories and changed it to kid friendly version so Disney is sensitive over simple things heck Disney copied so many things such as a anime called Kimba the white lion that was released back in the 60s guess what Disney copied them and honestly they have no right to feel betrayed what Mattel did tbh
@@lofelife9143 yeah I’m aware of it. Unfortunately fairy tales are now mostly associated with DisKnee. True they copied those classic fairy tales and put their own kid friendly twist to it, but to the big mouse company, it’s more of “mine is better lol” instead of who did it first.
@@christopher9306 Thats true and they’re stupid thinking like that and Mattel should continue making EAH series cause its way better then what DisKnee does 😂
@@lofelife9143unfortunately it’s about marketing and optics. It seems like Mattel felt that they couldn’t complete with Disney and would lose money so they pulled the dolls before that could happen
And that’s the thing: I don’t wanna pick! Each doll line/girl targeted show taught me a lesson or entertained me one way or another, why should I have to pick?
I think the WITCH and Winx thing is just a case of parallel thinking, so its unfair to call either of them ripoffs of each other, or that one is better than the other Great video 😭 Especially the segement at the end 🤗
It was just convenience, I'm sure; if I recall correctly, when Disney sued Iginio, he showed production for Winx Club began before W.I.T.C.H. came out (which means no one copied the other; just two similar-ish) ideas at the same time.
I have grown up with original intro, not 4Kids ver., so the OG remains the best for me. The melody is inspirational, cheerful and also a bit melancholic.
I remember the time of W.I.T.C.H. and Winx rivarly. I don't know how much rivarly had been doing now but I remember several blogs or fanfics where these two teams were fighting against each other. Specifically one blog where it was told not only by text but also gifs which enhanced the experience. I grew up with both. W.I.T.C.H. was earlier in my childhood and even had these comic magazines. While winx I stumbled upon once in vacation and years later before teenhood went into winx as animated W.I.T.C.H. ended with second season and no idea what happened. But later learned it got at least completed in the comics. I had dvds of angels friends after I stopped watching winx and then get into Lolirock. Learning about the overall MAgical girl genre. Got into precure and pretty much... I'm chill with all the shows you presented here. Maybe except ladybug but that's different hellhole.
I remember catching glimpses of WITCH covers in passing in the 2000s, and at the time I genuinely thought that it could be at least tangentially related to Winx Club. I literally knew nothing else about it other that it looked like Winx Club. And yes, I'm sick and tired of everyone claiming that LoliRock is a shameless Winx Club ripoff. And I grew up with both LoliRock and Winx Club so I know what I'm talking about.
When you mention how companies try to pit girls and women against each other with their products my mind was like “Jokes on them, I never fell for it. I just buy whatever I want and it’s everything or close to it at least.”. Like I’m proud to say that I am a Winx and W.I.T.C.H. fan.
Like you said, we can easily argue that winx club is a ripoff of magical girl animes if we’re going down the originality route. Originality is a weak argument anyway, its too late in human history to look for anything original anymore. To any creatives out there, don’t be discouraged by conversations like this
I am so glad that I never forced myself into a box by choosing which show or brand I liked better. I like frilly girl things like Winx and Barbie portray, but I also like W.I.T.C.H and Bratz grittier and y2k style. But I am all about being dynamic and switching up my style constantly.😂😂
For real the only thing that screamed "magical girl" to me in the show was the group's transformation, and even then it was hardly girly despite them resembling faeries in their "witch" forms.
I didn't know the beef between Winx and W.I.T.C.H. was that bad, i loved both shows a lot tbh because i was obsessed with fairies and magical girls. And while i was very young when Winx started, WITCH was during the beggining of my teenage years so it was a refreshing slightly more mature show that still appealed to my child brain. But i did know that there was this weird stugma that Winx was fir preppy girly girls and WITCH was for tomboy edgy girls. It was a little weird. But i didnt know disney trued to kill winx for like no reason, but I shouldn't be surprised...
Didn't W.I.T.C.H. exist in America in book form first . and at least one of these was also made by Igenio Straffi. That's like saying because Creamy Mami exists then Sailor Moon, the more known Magical girl anime and every other magical girl anime, shouldn't.
I don't agree with her but calling winx club a ripoff of sailor moon is just ridiculous when the creator has stated many times that the show was just inspired by it.
@Arealgenwunner Sailor Moon is basically nothing like Cutie Honey which only got retooled to be more magical girl like in a post Sailor Moon reboot. Cutie Honey was already a ripoff of a male superhero called Rainbowman. The original Sailor V manga was a mix of Sukeban Denka, Minky Momo and Wonder Woman (the live action tv version) its just American anime nerds who deny American influence on manga that play up Naoko having also acknowledged Cutie Honey. Toei animation then mixed Sailor V with Super Sentai and worked with Naoko to make Sailor Moon.
@@josheydubsIt depends though, biblically accurate angels all look different because of their categories. The ones we’re used to seeing in media are accurate, but are of a lower rank, it’s once you get to the higher ranks that you start seeing the freaky stuff. Angel friends is so understated despite the horrible dub the plot and character designs are pretty good! (Sulfus was one of my childhood crushes LMAO And I'm pretty sure this show was why I'm obsessed with the enemies to lovers trope till this day )
Actually W.I.T.C.H. Is not a copycat of the Winx because they came out at the same time 2004. However W.I.T.C.H. Was supposed to air in 2003 but there was too many PG13 scenes that it took a full year to re-edit the show
I loved everything you said! Those fanwars made me believe I had to pick one side, but after watching both WITCH and Winx, I see it completely the other way around! It is so beautiful that we have more than one show made for us with our silly little interest for fairies, girl friends groups, colorful, pretty characters, and worlds
I always preferred WC to W.I.T.C.H., and I wonder what would've happened if Disney never sued Iginio and worked with him the later seasons instead of Nick (or at least the upcoming reboot).
some of these comments aint it;;; If I see one more person claim that Sailor Mon started the magical girl genre I'm getting heartburn I get where the sentiment is coming from but its still wildly inaccurate, it's like saying Persona 3 started the Persona series. Not to mention the fact that Sailor Moon has quite a lot more in common with super sentai shows like Power Rangers or Kamen Rider. Sometimes shows/franchises will have tropes in common and that's fine. Tropes are tools for stories after all.
@@Timepilot94 not to mention magical girls started out as witches, some shows being inspired by Bewitched, like Sally the Witch that you mentioned. I'm just so annoyed at some comments cause like...imagine someone saying Naruto started shounen or something.

On the topic of Winx X W.I.T.C.H., I think both shows are equally good. I was a huge W.I.T.C.H. fan on my ealry childhood (I was 5 when the show came out) and later on, Winx was booming here in Portugal, and I fell in love with it as well. Both show kinda overlaps on their premises, but they're visually so different. Winx is so bright and colorful, which was very appealing for me growing up, while W.I.T.C.H. is more gloomy and "edgy" (hate that word lol), which is something that I prefer more nowadays being almost 25 years old. Both are great shows with awesome world-building and character development
I used to love both witch and Winx club. All of my cousins who were girls loved both witch and Winx club too. It was very surprising to me that there was fighting between the fandoms.
Before anyone gets angry in the comments, just knows she's not calling these shows ripoffs, just judging whether they are or not. And she decides that they are not ripoffs
lil'correction, the italian comic scene is pretty wide, the specific "for teenage girl" part of it is relatively small (and magical/tokusatsu inspired used to be even rarer, due to italy consistent habit of importing the mangas straight) so a runaway IP and a disney-backed one in the setting were fine dining for the fan of the genre, and the shows only added to that
witch was before winx club I remeber being like 6-10 buying comics. And yea they had carttoon long after comics but still... you rather agure that was otherwise if comes to witch and winx club (btw. I like both i just seying witch wast starting off magicial girl thingy in europe)
Tbh even as a guy I liked both WITCH and Winx Club for different reasons. I knew WITCH first from the comics, and the art style was inspiring to me as an artist. Same with Winx, which embodied that magical school energy I loved since I read the Harry Potter novels. I don't know, perhaps with guys we don't see a reason for similar shows to compete, but instead we see there's something else that takes a similar idea in a different direction and go; "Great, more stuff to fanboy over!" Can't speak for Angel Friends though, not really a fan of the art style. Lolirock was nice though.
ngl, put this video on to have smth in the background while doing my make up. Did not expect it to be the video i didnt know i needed. Great video, much love
W.i.t.c.h started before winx club (the first magazine was released 2001), so that definitely has no reason to be accused of being a ripoff of winx club
In my region Witch is far more popular than Winx club having darker mature theme that attracted boys compared to more girly Barbie theme with underrated great plot.
about angel’s friends- i think it gets way less attention than it deserves! yes it has a lot of flaws but the end of season plot twist, limbo trapped lady shipping the mcs (for evil reasons ofc), and simple episodes about the angel vs devil shenanigans were actually pretty riveting! i’ve seen barely any discussion of it sadly :( the whole series is even free on youtube!
@Timepilot94 Though, it's a shame that neither the show nor the comics actually got finished. They both finished on a cliffhanger, and I never understood why.
Why is Witch in the miniature??? That's kinda offensive, it was my fav show back then and it's its own thing. I think it was a case of converging evolution in media. Similar to Pokémon and Digimon (animes), they came in the same time but each one had different intentions and concepts behind and people just linked them together. Pokémon focuses in combat and episodic series, Digimon has a sci-fi ambient, the creatures talk and aren't captured (they were trying to do a tamagotchi for "boys") and the show is more linear. The only thing they have in common is weird animals that evolve (even each evolution system is different in both) and fight. Witch and Winx are magical girls
the whole reasoning why they might be rip offs/ knock offs is because all are western made anime inspired media they might be visually similar, if they are from the same sort of a time. you see that across all genres/ cartoons/ media. plus ever after high is more what if monster high but fairy tale characters, not edgy monsters (and I believe are by the same toy company anyway) then also I thought w.i.t.c.h. was comics first and the show later ? I mean my older sister had a WHOLE COLLECTION of the magazines with mainly only the comics in them, still should have the absolute unit of a binder with the like first release of those somewhere. They only started re-releasing in my area around the same time winx started airing (and I think I actually got to know about winx from a cd packed as a gift in one of these other already established media magazines) at which point my sister already had her magazine collection and then angel friends, a show I was also familiar with around the time of release, clearly pulling from the same sort of a magical girls media genre blueprint, because it is quite enjoyable format. saying it's a rip off is like calling all romance genre books rip off from one another, or all horror media. they follow certain things which are characteristic for the genre they are made as. A western magical girl media will have: magical girl group, a leader the consumer of media can project onto, relatable enough rest of the group likely based on tropes to offer diversity for relating, a love interest from possibly rival group as it is a girl targeted media and rivalry creates conflict which is important for story/relationship progression, and, some overarching evil force for the heroes to fight that's just all stories ever babe, like what ? genuine confusion ??
I grew up with both winx and w.i.t.c.h. I loved both but I lean more towards witch just because I liked the darker tones of it maybe but to this day still love both
Very interesting, I didn’t realize how many clone shows were made of this. I remember seeing Winx and a few of these clone shows on cable a few times as a child though.
Fun fact about Lolirock (WITH MASSIVE SPOILERS), FINAL SPOILER WARNING At the end of the final season before the show was cancelled, the main villain was defeated. However, one of the "evil" (theyre just kinda goofy tbh) twins, the brother, is CANONICALLY KILLED OFF IN FRONT OF HIS SISTER (we don't see the body so he's probably alive maybe) accidentally by the heroines, which motivates the sister to use the power that the former main baddy used. It ends with a reflection/musing from the protag after the sister threatened everyone and swore revenge
Also most of all the Angel's friends English voice actors have the 4 kids winx club voice actors. This isnt just raf and mikki. Gas, sulfus, actually everyone has a 4 kids voice actor from winx club.
About Descendants vs EAH: Just like the lawsuit with W.i.t.c.h vs Winx Disney didn´t like EAH. If I remember right this is why Mattel lost the Disney licence and Hasbro got it instead. Because they couldn´t have EAH while they planned on making descendants. Because these two lines couldn´t have co-existed. Because Disney needs to own a monopoly. Hypocritical since Disney is famous for adapting stories from the public domain. Disney ending their license with Mattel is part of why EAH was canceled and why MH had the reboot. Since Mattel lost money without the Disney princess line. Edit: don't take this fully as gospel. Just as any comment you see online, you should take it with a grain of salt. I might have misremembered some facts.

RE the Winx/WITCH lawsuit: It reminded me of two cases from comics (the Doom Patrol & the X-Men in the 60s stories, and later Neil Gaiman's Tim Hunter character compared to Harry Potter), where it was ultimately just a case of like inspirations. As someone who liked both, they were so radically different in their execution of their shared genre that I kinda dreaded Disney winning & trying to stake a claim on general magical girl tropes. Anyway, if you want to see a series biting both pretty hard, there's the Italian-only comic Isa & Bea: Witches, which feels like a weird hybrid of the two.

Hey, Usasana, I'm keeping this really short, the reason Mattel ended EAH was because Disney cancelled a major contract with them over the EAH/Descendants debacle, even though Mattel didn't have anything in their contracts preventing them from making EAH. Disney could take any potential monetary fallout from ending the contracts, but they hurt Mattel by ending the longstanding contracts and going with Hasboro (iirc, it was hasboro they swapped to for the specific thing) the descendants dolls were also cheaper made while EAH was full BJD so they really hit mattel in the wallet with that. They could not afford to fight disney about this.
Animation for girls or not, as a man, I can safely say Winx is fun as hell to rewatch. Sure, there's some dub problems, there's some funky animation, some plot holes. But I always come back to this show and I can never overstate how iconic all the Winx are to me, from seasons 1-3 respectively (considering I only watched up to season 4 and never really started season 5).

To any creatives out there, don’t be discouraged by conversations like this
I didn’t even know there was a fan war between Witch and Winx. I like both😂
I am so glad that I never forced myself into a box by choosing which show or brand I liked better. I like frilly girl things like Winx and Barbie portray, but I also like W.I.T.C.H and Bratz grittier and y2k style. But I am all about being dynamic and switching up my style constantly.😂😂

Yes it did
Calling anything a winx club ripoff is a bit strong when winx club is already a sailor moon ripoff 😂

It was very surprising to me that there was fighting between the fandoms.

lolirock is definitely get inspired by sailor moon and precure, design wise lolirock is so precure coded (in a good way ofc)
Just because it has magic does NOT make it a rip-off
lil'correction, the italian comic scene is pretty wide, the specific "for teenage girl" part of it is relatively small (and magical/tokusatsu inspired used to be even rarer, due to italy consistent habit of importing the mangas straight) so a runaway IP and a disney-backed one in the setting were fine dining for the fan of the genre, and the shows only added to that
witch was before winx club I remeber being like 6-10 buying comics.
I don't know, perhaps with guys we don't see a reason for similar shows to compete, but instead we see there's something else that takes a similar idea in a different direction and go; "Great, more stuff to fanboy over!"
Can't speak for Angel Friends though, not really a fan of the art style.
Angel's friends is not a rip off of Winx Club! They aren't even the same shows!
Rewatch the critic with more attention
@Timepilot94 Though, it's a shame that neither the show nor the comics actually got finished. They both finished on a cliffhanger, and I never understood why.
Me who watched Winx Club and W.I.T.C.H. in my teen years agrees completly that they're diffrent 100%. Now where can I watch Regal Academy?
Witch and Winx are magical girls
the whole reasoning why they might be rip offs/ knock offs is because all are western made anime inspired media
they might be visually similar, if they are from the same sort of a time. you see that across all genres/ cartoons/ media.
plus ever after high is more what if monster high but fairy tale characters, not edgy monsters (and I believe are by the same toy company anyway)
then also I thought w.i.t.c.h. was comics first and the show later ? I mean my older sister had a WHOLE COLLECTION of the magazines with mainly only the comics in them, still should have the absolute unit of a binder with the like first release of those somewhere. They only started re-releasing in my area around the same time winx started airing (and I think I actually got to know about winx from a cd packed as a gift in one of these other already established media magazines) at which point my sister already had her magazine collection
and then angel friends, a show I was also familiar with around the time of release, clearly pulling from the same sort of a magical girls media genre blueprint, because it is quite enjoyable format. saying it's a rip off is like calling all romance genre books rip off from one another, or all horror media. they follow certain things which are characteristic for the genre they are made as. A western magical girl media will have: magical girl group, a leader the consumer of media can project onto, relatable enough rest of the group likely based on tropes to offer diversity for relating, a love interest from possibly rival group as it is a girl targeted media and rivalry creates conflict which is important for story/relationship progression, and, some overarching evil force for the heroes to fight
that's just all stories ever babe, like what ? genuine confusion ??
Yup monster high and ever after high are basically the same like u said but also different

About Descendants vs EAH:
Just like the lawsuit with W.i.t.c.h vs Winx Disney didn´t like EAH.

Anyway, if you want to see a series biting both pretty hard, there's the Italian-only comic Isa & Bea: Witches, which feels like a weird hybrid of the two.
ok guys so winx is one of my fave but not just winx more but like not just winx
None of these mentioned cartoons are any ripoffs of Winx Club 😭
Fan 1: I can’t believe this, they stole this idea from Winx Club.
Fan 2: Yeah well Winx Club stole it from Sailor Moon.
Fan 3: Everything is stolen these days. Even this joke is a ripoff from The Simpsons.
I've never understand the Winx vs W.I.T.C.H. war, i was obsessed with the Winx cartoon, obsessed with the W.I.T.C.H comics and had dolls from both 😅
Its always a "lost" human girl who later discovers she has magic roots and she might actually not be human or she is half human😅... don't forget the adoptive parents.
I loved all the shows.
When I was younger, I almost got sucked in deep by the W.I.T.C.H. vs Winx Club thing, but then I thought, "The love in my heart isn't exclusive to just one thing." If I can love many things in my life, I can love W.I.T.C.H., Winx Club, so so much more!
People who compare ever after high and winx never watched either one of them same with people who compare Lolirock, winx
Yup none of them are the same well not really both are all or almost all girls and have magic and things like that but other then that nothing is the same exact thing enough to make it a rip off
@@Natalielovescats yeah but with ever after high it’s just a story about different fairy tales kids and their destiny and how the evil queen child want to changes hers for the better.
Lolirock is about a three young girl who have to find gems (forgot what they was called) while fighting off the two twins who make different monsters every time and they need those gem stones to repair the crown and defeat what his name so they can save their homeland and parents
So I don’t understand how people can compare them and be like “yep that’s a rip off” like winx club is just about them living in fairy school while fighting off the revival school now world off winx is them pretending to be humans while being on a tv show so they can find these different people who are in danger to save them before it’s too late
@@Moonlight_Garden199 I never said they were the same I said the only thing that’s the same is there is girls in both or all and they have magic and are almost always fighting for something
I also watched all of them so I know what you are talking about
@@Natalielovescats yeah I was agreeing with you sorry if it came off weird lol
w.i.t.c.h. being the best of the rest of the flops mentioned i know thats right
So Winx Club and W.I.T.C.H. are more a “Chicken and Egg” situation?
Thank you I was so happy. Everyone keeps shutting on like four kids doves but I’m like they’re Openings were fire though. Trust me if you didn’t love those Openings, you wouldn’t even even touched future anime they made you want more and I’m sick of people saying that it was terrible. This is our childhood nostalgia, and we will respect it.
There is literally NO WAY you called lolirock a wind ripoff
GIRL’S GENERATION MAKE YOU FEEL THE HEAT
Also I totally disagree, the Italian intro is soo much better and suits the show more
Animation for girls or not, as a man, I can safely say Winx is fun as hell to rewatch. Sure, there's some dub problems, there's some funky animation, some plot holes. But I always come back to this show and I can never overstate how iconic all the Winx are to me, from seasons 1-3 respectively (considering I only watched up to season 4 and never really started season 5).
I know it's the safest choice ever, but Bloom is so goddamn cool. I wish the new reboot will be good enough to boost the brand.
Oh god...Not the DIC Sailor Moon music...Thank goodness there is a new and faithful dub
Actually, Regal Academy was MADE before Winx Club, BUT, Regal Academy was released in 2016.
