  • I photograph two looks with Allie using Kodak Ektar 100, Lomography 100, and Kodak Pro Image 100 using a Contax G1 and Bronica ETRS for some "slow-medium" speed film photography outdoors in open shade and back light. I also use Cinestill 50D and Kodak Vision3 250D in this session mixing medium format film with 35mm film. A lot of people seem intimidated by 100 ISO or seem to have the idea that 400 ISO film is the only way to keep things hand-holdable, and I try to dispel that myth.

    So glad to hear your comments about saturation. I personally am not drawn to the Portra Pastel sort of look much preferring, say Velvia's color rendition. I hate to say it but in color I almost always go digital because I like it better. Black & white is where I really like the film look. Great video.

      Thank you! I prefer film color overall, but definitely wish we still had a bit more variety. But I agree: Black and white is an easy selection to make vs. digital. I need to experiment more with pushing and pulling film, though. Multiple steps gunk up things, but sometimes a subtle change can help overcome a stylistic difference without much drawback.

      Thank you, I appreciate it! I've always been drawn to the color of film vs. digital, and I've become even more aware of the differences between film types in that regard, too.

    I love the number 9 and 36. i agree with the lack of saturation on modern "pro" films. They have a very "pastel" desaturated look, specially portra. Because of that i prefer Kodak Gold or Fuji Superia. Maybe the skates outfit look good with something "experimental" like Lomochrome purple or some film like that. My favorites or todays video are: 7 - 9 -10 - 13 - 25 -27 - 28 - 29 -31 -33 - 36 - 39 and 47.

    Both the Lomo and the Ektar were a surprise, the former especially. Nice work.

      Thank you! I had thought the Lomo was going to be a bit off-looking based on the first roll I had shot, but this one really won me over. I definitely think both are worth a try, and I'll likely be buying much more. And thank you for commenting!

      @@JamieMPhoto cheers. I wondered about your opinion on how to meter a slide film such as Provia when you don't own a light meter. My 35mm Minolta has CLC metering which is fine for colour neg but im suspecting it's not accurate enough for slides. So would an app or spot meter reading from my DSLR work?

    • @JamieMPhoto
      @JamieMPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would imagine the Minolta meter might be close enough for "general" scenes where there is a good distribution of lights and darks and there aren't any major differences like backlighting. I like using digital cameras as meters, as far as metering goes, because they help us be sure we aren't misreading something by giving a proof image. I would imagine your DSLR meter should work well enough, if not very well. Slide film can be unforgiving, but it's not quite as strict as it can sound. I would guess something like product or catalog work would demand extreme accuracy, but we should have a *little* play otherwise. I hope that helps!

    • @davidellinsworth22
      @davidellinsworth22 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamieMPhoto thanks very much for that. I'll maybe cross reference the readings from both cameras and see how it compares

    • @JamieMPhoto
      @JamieMPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! I think that's a good strategy, so long as you're pretty sure the Minolta meter hasn't lost sensitivity or anything.

    Hi Jamie! I really enjoyed this video, the pictures are great, I like the colours of these films. I had to use Ektar 100 recently, during golen hour, the results are different, this film reacts differently depending on the light source, I have more reds than you got. I have a question regarding the styling, did the model, Allie, choose the outfits? or did you give her some directions? Thanks for your videos, always a pleasure to watch them :) Take care. Denis

      Thank you so much! I gave a few ideas and asked her if she had any clothes she wanted to show off ... I might have named a specific area or saw something she had and we got on the 1980s/1990s track for the first outfit, which was her grandmother's back in the day, and then threw in the last outfit out of some of her recent purchases. So I guess it's a little bit of improv and a little bit of feeling things out with some rough ideas. I hope that's helpful at all!

    50 and 100 speed film are always going to look cleaner, but for me, who shoots alot of street, 400 works better. Especially since I zone focus most of the time. I can keep a larger DOF whole maintaining a higher SS.
    Great images BTW. Using her outfit with film really brings out the retro look.

    • @JamieMPhoto
      @JamieMPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! And I definitely agree with your film choice for street work and zone focusing. And I appreciate it! I was excited to have that roll of Lomo 100 on hand when I realized it would mesh well with that outfit.

    Noobie question. I'm just now getting into darkroom printing. Can I compensate for Ektar's redness issue by lowering the magenta on my enlarger?

    • @JamieMPhoto
      @JamieMPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question! I've known about color printing for ages, but am just now dipping my toes into it. I've had a small technical setback this week, but should be able to give a proper go at things hopefully within a week or so, and testing Ektar is actually one of the very first things I want to try. So much color printing knowledge has been lost or its practitioners have moved on, so I might try to seek out the few people I know who have deep experience with it to see if I can pick their brains. I'll definitely be posting about it!

    • @plateoshrimp9685
      @plateoshrimp9685 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sort of. You can adjust for an over all color cast, so you can get a more neutral skin tone, but the changes you make will also apply to everything else. So making skin less red may give an overall cyan tint to your image. Remember though, if you want your print to be less red, you need to dial UP both magenta and yellow. The paper is negative (negative film on negative paper = positive image) so you need to increase the color to get less of it in the print.

    I've shot very expired Ektar 25, 120, which I rated at ISO 12, handheld on a Mamiya 645. Mirror lift helped, but the images were fine. Not sure I could have managed that on 35mm though :)

    • @JamieMPhoto
      @JamieMPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, yeah when things get below 50, it's trickier. Possible, but tripods are much more useful there.
