  • Flash photography in the digital age is pretty convenient due to the ability to immediately preview images on the backs of our cameras. However, in the film age, we had to rely on flash meters or instant photography to assure us that our exposures were successful. On a recent session, I decided to go film-only with a flash. However, I forgot my flash meter, and had no digital camera to use as a backup. Instead of ditching my flash, I decided to try to guess my way through making the exposures on my Bronica ETRS medium format film camera using the Flashpoint XPLOR 600 Pro on Kodak Portra 800 film (at 200 ISO, developed regularly). I also used my Contax G1 with Kodak Pro Image 100. See if I managed to get my flash exposures correct, and also check out the noir-ish images I took on Fomapan 100 in medium format! And learn about Guide Numbers, which could have really helped me out!
