Very cool. I'm one of those people who is very intimidated by flash. I have one but only use it on digital. Very impressed.

Thank you! I love that once you're used to it on digital, the flash meter will take care of most of what you need to know. I definitely encourage trying it out!

Those Minolta flash meters look like a pretty good bargain!

They really are! You might need to check the switches on the larger ones, but other than that, they seem rock solid. I know the smaller I have is really nice because I can check flash and ambient back to back with just a single flick of a switch.

I like to use flash meters on both film and even digital. You can just get so much better straight out of the camera results from digital instead of relying what the image looks like on the back of the camera which can be inaccurate depending on LCD settings.

My favorites of this episode are: 4 - 9 -12 -13 - 19 - 24 - 28 - 34 - 38 - 42 & 44. My top three are: 38 - 44 & 13. I like the flash, but I not use it too much, my models usually don't like it and in my city is restricted in some locations if you want to take photos there. I like to use a daylight or a shadow filter to warm the light of the flash, and minimize the white balance difference between flash and daylight. Cheers

Gelling the flash is a great idea, for sure! If it were any later than we shot, and even when I did shoot I could have used a 1/4 or 1/8 CTO gel on the flash to lend it some warmth. I like that knowing flash can also translate into being able to get the light in any situation, since it usually comes with understanding what kind of light we want in the first place. Thank you for the feedback and comment!

you can add the polaris spd100 to your list of cheap meters. Very similar form factor and feature set to the sekonic 308b. They hover just north of 50 bucks used but tend to be a decade or two younger than some of the well worn minolta and sekonic offerings.

Ohh, brilliant! Thank you for the tip! I'll be checking this out.

@@JamieMPhoto I got one new around 2015. I gifted an ebay score to a friend in january. The old minolta and sekonics are going to have more features and utility. But the 308b and the polaris did enough for me.

3:07 Wobbly platform shoes balanced on a handrail-it's at least a *little* scary. But great shot at 3:46.

Thank you! Yeah, that took quite a bit of effort. ha ha. She was all for it, though.

how do you sync the flash to your hassy?

I usually use a PC cable these days, though I really have been trying to convince myself to pick up some old Pocket Wizards for a simple remote. I've tried some others and they were too disappointing to trust, or too needlessly complex. 4 channels and reliability is more appealing to me now.
