    Nice and to the point. I don't get why people who watch a good TH-cam review don't like it. Thousands of viewers, a couple of hundred likes. Most probably did like it. Even if one isn't crazy about it, liking it is a small price to pay ($0) to acknowledge the work of the reviewer and one's getting the service. One pays for a meal and leaves a tip every time one eats out. At least I hope they do.

      Afaik it's a range of focal lengths that give you that impression. I f you say normal = picture diagonal, the answer for full frame is 42 ;-)
      No kidding, that's very close, 43.3mm or 28mm on APS, which makes 50mm (or 35 on APS) a bit too long.
      To me 28mm (or 18mm on APS) is a bit of no mans land. Too wide if something is a bit away and not wide enough to fool around with wide angle look.

    • @jochenkraus7016
      @jochenkraus7016 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      28mm on APS is close to the sensor diagonal. 35mm on APS (like 50mm on FF) is longer.
      It's similar with 80mm on 6x6.

  • @82myke
    @82myke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I happen to love the 35mm focal length and noticed that Chris overlooked the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm 1.4 AF during his rundown of 35mm, fast, full-frame, Sony options. I own the Samyang and for roughly half the price of this G-Master it is worth considering. However, I suspect that the AF is better on the Sony lens and I am considering switching to the Sony 35, 1.8 because it is absolutely tiny compared to the Samyang.

    • @dakunclear
      @dakunclear 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What’s the sound of the AF like on the camera most of the time I shoot manual but good to know either way.

    • @82myke
      @82myke 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dakunclear My copy of the Samyang 35, f1.4 makes a very quiet ticking sound as it focuses. Usually 3 or 4 ticks in rapid succession. I cannot hear it if the camera is at waist level, but as I bring my head closer to the lens I can hear it. It is not too bad and I would not worry about it disturbing anyone other than myself. I find that the AF works really well in video mode which is a major selling point for me. It racks beautifully and stops with precision. If I were doing event photography for a living I would probably consider a native Sony lens as an alternative mostly for the slight accuracy bump, but the AF is still pretty impressive especially for a third-party, E mount lens.

    Don't pile onto the Canon PowerShot Zoom too hard. Those of us who are into birding and wildlife but don't always want to carry our "real" camera gear with us appreciate something pocketable but with a long zoom lens. I just wish it played nicer with phones. It's an interesting concept even if the execution is imperfect.

  • @ACwithFT
    @ACwithFT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In talking about Sigma, how did you miss the 35 1.2, the one that was built native for FE and not just a DSLR adapted version like the Sigma 1.4? I know you're talking about 1.4s, but can't see any reason why the new GM is being talked about as affordable, when its priced the same as the as the faster and stunningly sharp Simga 1.2

    • @joewellham1
      @joewellham1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out Gordon Laing's video comparison, the Sigma doesn't fare too well against this Sony. The Sony is considerably sharper with zero distortion and the AF on the Sigma is poor in comparison.

    • @ACwithFT
      @ACwithFT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joewellham1 I don't need to see Gordon's video. But, if those are his conclusions, he sounds like someone who likes to talk about gear more than use it. There's a lot of those people on TH-cam. The Sigma is tack sharp. Period. And, The AF on the Sigma is amazing - I've used it for backcountry skiing/snowboarding for action shots for resorts (clients, paid shoots and very demanding AF situations). Fantastic AF - on par with my GM 24 and the GM 135 (I don't own that one, but I've rented it). In the real word (for shooting for clients), I find the Sigma 35 to be as good AF as any native lens I've used and significantly better than some other highly touted lenses. I haven't updated this gallery is a while (have a lot more shots form the 35 I dig), but you can see some examples with it here: firsttracks.smugmug.com/Sigma-35-12/

      "Matching/beating the competition"
      When Canon and Nikon release their f1.4 offerings for RF and Z mounts respectively, then we'll see then or if Sony ever releases an f1.2. Till then the Nikon and Canon f2.8 trinity zooms beat the Sony offerings.

      not really. For example, Nikon 35mm 1.8 S has less focus breathing issue than this GM lens. This is one of the usual weaknesses of GM lenses from Sony

  • @danieltemporao4538

    Why no one is comparing to Sigma f1.4 HSM ART ? Same aperture and roughly the same size.
    Sony is 3 x 3.8" / 76 x 96 mm
    Sigma is 3.03 x 4.72" / 77 x 120 mm

      @@jochenkraus7016 probably f2.8 not super exciting but good for Z users. I gave up on Nikon long ago and they’d need a compact 40mm 1.8 to get me even remotely interested in that system. Their standard f1.8 primes in the Z line are all too big for what they are, they forgot that mirrorless should be at least a little smaller than DSLR stuff. To each their own I won’t diss Nikon users but the company is lacking in vision

    I have the Sony GM 35MM 1.4, and I use this focal length a lot so I am looking to invest in another 35MM. Which option would you choose? SIGMA 35MM 1.4 DG DN or SONY 35MM 1.8

  • @ThePhotographyHobbyist

    I don't know...that's $550 more than the Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 and yes, while the Nikon is a 1.8 instead of 1.4, I think it's better optically. I think Sony should give their buyers another lower priced and optically better lens. I would assume though if Nikon releases a 35mm 1.4 for the Z mount it's going to be a little pricey too...but I personally would rather have the 1.8 and save quite a bit of money and still have an optically excellent lens (that's weather sealed and has hardly any focus breathing too). That being said, if you need or want it, the new Sony lens will be great.

      regarding 35mm lens:
      sony gm 1.4 is better than nikon 1.8, no question here...
      additionally, sony has also 1.8 which is cheaper than nikon 1.8
      options, options, option in sony system: there is also Zeiss 1.4, Zeiss 2.8, Sigma 1.2, Sigma 1.4, Sigma 2.0, Samyang 2.8, Samyang 1.8, Tamron 2.8 ...
