Thanks for another thorough and technical review Gerald! Considering here in Europe the Sony 1.4 GM retails for €1700, the Sony 1.8 for €700 and the Sigma will be priced at €849 and also considering I will be using the lens mainly for photography and not be close-focusing too often, the Sigma may still be the best option for me.
Man i don't own any sigma lenses, sony lenses, or full frame cameras but I still end up watching your videos and learning so much from them because the basic principals and problems when it comes to lenses and cameras in photography and cinematography carry over across brands and models. I appreciate your in-depth reviews.
That's interesting how different of results we have all seen. I just looked over my head to head results on the a1 between the Sigma and the GM and found that Sigma was equally sharp (a hair better, actually), with the GM having the edge in the outer third of the image circle. I did see the CA you mention in a few shots, but not persistently like you encountered. Did your copy seem properly centered? I've had lenses damaged in transit that underperformed.
Say, Dustin, I like your reviews and on this lens your perspective presents regarding “character” of the lens where as sharpness or close focus ability is key for me. Itsa matter of communication style as I see it.
I got sigma lens yesterday and greatly dissapointed. The close focus shots at 1.4 are not sharp at all with lots of colour fringing. Also distant shots at 1.4 are tad softer. I went ahead and returned it today and ordered the sony GM which is currently back ordered
Best in-depth review! On my copy of the lens I also did notice a bit of aberrations especially in the catchlight of the model eyes, when using strobe! I’ve been using A7R4, and it was quite sharp, but it was detailed enough to see that aberrations! Cheers from Japan!
I somewhat disagree with your final conclusion here. After seeing Christopher Frost's in-depth reviews of both this Sigma and the Sony 35mm f1.8 that you compare it with, the Sigma is significantly sharper fully open, which is an important factor for many photographers (myself included). If I would only shoot at higher apertures like 2.8-5.6, I could pretty much use any 35mm. The main reason to invest in a good prime, is to shoot at low apertures without sacrificing much quality. And that is exactly what the Sigma does. When it comes to the Sony GM, I think that's a very unfair comparison given the price difference. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Your reviews are as good as Sony’s latest G Master lenses. I appreciate the different viewpoints from the colabs. For me, compact size (and light weight) is everything for street photography and travel, so yet another reason the two Sony 35’s win out for my personal style and use. Thank you for these excellent series of reviews!
my theory with the sigma 35 f 1.4 is that they designed it to be a competitor to the zeiss 35 f1.4. its nearly the exact same size and form with drastically better images. i dont think sigma counted on sony releasing a gmaster just weeks before they released their own. i expect this lens to have a version 2 in the near future.
How is it that you only have 285k subscribers? just getting into photography and you are my go-to creator as your videos are super in depth. I have bought any lenses because they are expensive but hoping eventually to afford one
I'd love to see you get your hands on industry standard cine lenses and compare them against the best offerings from photography companies to see the differences and benefits of each. Just an idea!
@@antoniog8276 I work full time in video with higher end cine lenses, so I already know the differences. I'd just love to see it on Gerald Undone's channel, as he tends to focus on video, and his breakdowns of focus breathing, flare control, CA, and distortion are some of the best. I think it would be extremely helpful to keep things in perspective for still lenses shooters, as it might really highlight the shortcuts that lens manufacturers take to keep the prices down. From my experiences, amateur videographers simply don't know the differences and having a side by side comparison might be helpful to them.
A lot of these issues with this lens would be more prominent to photographers and not filmmakers, in my opinion. Watching a movie, I'm not going to "punch in" to look for chromatic aberration or focus bands. I guess that's one of the nicer aspects of filmmaking. Of course, the focus breathing would be an issue. And from what I've seen from this video, the bokeh is pretty clean...except when you "punch in". Thanks for another thorough Undone review. I don't know too many people that cover products with such detail, other than Philip Bloom and Jared Polin. I'm a grateful subscriber to be sure. 😀
Wow I paniced when i saw all the reviews popping up after purchasing the GM version 3 weeks prior. Glad with my purchase though and reassuring with your review. :)
I just watched Dustin Abbots video and it's like he's reviewing a completely different lens. Do you think your poor results might be down to sample variation?
The only question I need answered is, is it worth the upgrade over the original sigma 35mm 1.4? I'm pretty sure many have those same concerns cause my sigma 35 1.4 getting nervous 😬
I watched this to the end too... . Not sure why, really, as my camera is a Z6ii. But, the chromatic aberration demos were interesting. I use DXO and they claim their lens correction modules help a lot. I wonder if they help the Sigma to any significant amount. Assuming there is a module a available... . Well done, again, Undone!
that hazy diffused look is called spherical aberration. it only shows at close focus distances (~ half a meter or less) and usually goes away by stopping the lens down by one or two stops. my guess is that sigma intentionally left this aberration partially uncorrection in favor of smoother out-of-focus rendering
Or more likely it is the result of their redesign of the lens for mirrorless cameras. They shortened the lens and didn't want to change the optical formula too much. The price to pay was close up performance.
@@PeterKoperdan no not likely. the optical formula of the new lens is totally different. also, mirrorless lenses are not "prone" to spherical aberration, it is a design choice.
Love the close-up wide open tests. I shoot like this as well. Have found that the Sony 35mm 1.8 makes most lenses look very soft in comparison when used this way. It's the first lens I ever used on mirrorless and never realized how spoiled I was until I tried lots of others and found that they can't even compare when used this way. Every Fuji lens I've tried is soft close and wide open; I assume they don't optimize for it.
It is the Q2 35mm lens :-) I wonder if Tamron will release a Q3 35mm lens. Thinking of it Zeiss too are lagging behind on new 35mm lenses. Sony offers 4 of them while Sigma and Samyang each have 3 models. Tamron and Zeiss drag their feet with only one 35mm lens per brand
So glad I watched this video, as I originally planned on getting this Sigma, but was unaware of these problems he mentioned. I went back and watched his video on the best 35mm for Sony. In the beginning he mentioned why he didn't include the Samyang 35mm 1.4 I hope he looks into the version II of that lens! Apparently fixed some of those issues? Could be the best 35mm for the money?
Hi, I was specifically looking for a 35mm autofocus that had a progressive and soft blur that is close to cine lenses without an excessive detachment that makes it look like a collage. Is this lens right for me or do you recommend something else, for example the 35 Sigma F2?
Very perceptive review, thanks for all the details! I do think though that the Sigma is a slam dunk choice over the Sony f/1.8, because it does everything the Sony does plus it offers the option of f/1.4. The f/1.4 is flawed in some situations but in others it shines. Certainly worth the slight increment in price over the Sony f/1.8 unless size and weight are very critical or strong preference.
you say you shot this vid with the 35mm sony 1.8 ? i just bought it and i cant get it focused at all assuming its my own fault but im running out of ideas what to try
Thank Gerald ! 35mm is perfect for full-frame, but I used APSC might be get some else lens, could you advise best lens for eos 90d for my youtube works.
SOOO many 35mm lenses for Sony E and they all have various drawbacks. It's almost funny that this focal length keeps having trouble while they pull off everything else really well like the 14/1.8
Hey Gerald, could you do a round up of cheaper Chinese manual focus lenses for video use? They look pretty decent. For eg: 7artisans, meike, kamlan, ttartisan etc

An old review, I know, and I have 35GM, but now looking for Leica mount... I have to ask, what is the purpose of focusing at f1.4 up close? Most often when I get that close, even 5.6 doesn't have enough depth of field. What am I missing?
Great review Gerald! I can understand your frustration with sigma's productions lately.... The fact is they are doing good yet but the recent sony products are acting like a "game changer" leading the quality in the whole industry! Now comparing this good sigma lens with the Sony GM we can confidently say the GM is the best ever made autofocus 35mm f1.4 in any brands! Yes it's not perfect but is the perfect possible option available!
That's interesting. That hazy look is exactly like a problem I have with an older A-mount Sigma 70-200 2.8 I ended up getting rid of. Never been able to figure out what the problem was exactly.
Phew. I just finally received my Sony 35GM the day the Sigma 35 leaked and was shook. Thankfully the Sigma disappoints a bit. Which, however, is pretty unfortunate. Always great to have competition and options for everyone! Great work, as always, Gerald!
I wish this was easier for me to decide but it's not. Gerald, Should I get a Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS Lens or the 24-70mm f2.8 G-master if it's only going to be used for video? All I see is people YouTubing with regular lenses but no one mentions the 28-135mm is it no good or is the 24-70 just superior for video?
I notice that you haven't reviewed the Zeiss Batis 40mm ... I would be interested in the Gerald Undone treatment and how it compares to your favourite 35 mm 1.8 lens from Sony...
I recently bought the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 'Art' and I was confused b/w the 50mm, 85m, and 35mm. When comparing them with Zeiss Batis and Sony Lenses, the price makes a huge impact because of that 1.4 aperture. Also! It's built like a tank as compared to cheaper Samyang/Rokinon offerings. I tried my hands on both G-Master and Zeiss, if the price wasn't an issue, Zeiss Batis all the way. While as far as G-Master goes, both 35mm and 50mm but not the 85mm, I would rather take either the 1.8 version or the Sigma.
What do you think about the Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 & Sigma Art 35mm F1.4 lenses. who is much better with the quality of the bokeh and the sharpness of the image.
Ugh, I really want a 35mm for L mount and I was hoping this would be the ticket. I don't want the sigma contemporary and the 1.2 Art is massive and expensive. I wish Panasonic would release the rest of their 1.8 primes so I could see if the 35mm was sufficient for my needs. Anyway, fantastic review and definitely helped me save some money lol.
Love that you don't put brand preference ahead of objectivity. That specular blooming and lack of contrast is a bit reminiscent of some of the super fast manual primes on the market, my M43 & E-Mount Mitakon's show this quite distinctly at f/0.95, my Voigtlander less so (still not what you'd call a sharp lens. 35mm is one of my favourite focal lengths too, though for Sony FE my favourite overall to date is the Samyang Tiny Prime. I recently lost mine for a few days as I had inadvertently put it away on my M43 lens shelf. It is just that small. Sigma are one of my favourite lens manufacturers too, so a bit of a shame they didn't completely nail this. I recently picked up the new Sony FE version of their 85mm f/1.4 and that thing is ridiculously good.
So crazy. I recently got the 35mm 1.2, because it out performed the Zeiss 35mm 1.4. Now there are like 5 more 35mm focal length options. How long can Canon and Nikon continue to prevent Sigma and Tamron from making lenses? There is little enough reason to buy a Nikon already, but since neither of them can ship the few lenses they make, Sony is just that much more attractive to the remaining dslr shooters looking to jump.
You are amazing, I was just about to buy this lens, I hope their 50mm for Sony E mount is better. Manny loves this lens, the 35mm that you are reviewing, but it was how he was using it.
Wondered about whether the new Sigma is an upgrade over the older Sigma 35 1.4. Is it sharper? Does it have more chromatic aberration? I know the older one was heavier and did not focus as well for video.
great review, but would have been a bit better if you showed us more outdoor images. I feel like most of the tests and comparisons were taken at very close focusing distances, which not everyone uses realistically all the time
Hello Gerald, it's a great review. But I was skeptical about the Vignette of this lens while shooting the video. Can you please make a video on its Vignette Test? No TH-camr spoke about the Vignette issue of this lens.
Thanks for a very comprehensive and clear review! Seeing this trend with more and more lenses these days .. close focussing compromised to get closer to GM infinity performance (and size/weight) at a lower price point. I guess it makes sense looking at typical usage, but I really like to shoot 24 & 35 focal lengths up quite close. Other case being the new Samyang 24/1.8 close focus compared to GM24 .. However that one did less worse compared the GM at an even lower size & price. Not sure what went wrong with the Sigma. Oh well .. luxury of choice is a good thing. Edit: Kinda loving the slightly outlined bokeh from the Sigma. Very nice aesthetic!
Hey Gerald, love your lens reviews, but could you please start testing vignetting? I imagine Sigma's larger lenses may have quite a bit less vignetting than Sony's, especially wide open, which is quite important for low light shots where we're already cranking ISOs for the center.
You couldn't have said it better. I am on the hunt for a new 35mm and am so torn! Sigma 1.4, sigma 1.2, sony 1.4GM (pricey) or the old sony 1.8... too many choices!
Thanks Gerald for such detailed comparison review, i am comparing Sony 35gm and Sony 35 1.8 If I am a video maker and don’t really mind focus breathing issue. Wondering the video images quality gonna make any noticeable difference on FX3 ‘s 4K 10bit ? Consider the resolution is very low on 4K. My key consideration is image quality on video.
Thanks for having me on your channel Gerald!

That same close focus issue happens on the Fuji X100 cameras. Strange
Is this lens good for toy photography? Outside shots in particular?

I feel like most of the tests and comparisons were taken at very close focusing distances, which not everyone uses realistically all the time
Would you say the Sony 35 f1.8 is better for the day and the new Sigma 35 f1.4 DG DN Art is for the night?
Hii, is it worthy to buy used 85mm 1.4 DG HSM lens for 555$ usd? Please reply
that layer of haze the lens has wide-open looks very similar to the Rokinon/Samyang 35 VDSLR. Same thing with the chromatic aberration.
I'm Gerald Undone and no hamsters were harmed in the making of this video.
This is strange, dustin abbott says at F1.4 it's incredibly sharp! I wonder if there is differences between copies, another great review 📷🙏
I’m guessing it is. The only sharpness issues it has seem to be at very close distances. Really all Gerald seemed to offer examples of.
What picture profile on the a7siii do you use to film this video?
S-Log3/S-Gamut3.Cine
So I have to pick the old 35mm 1.4 if I'm not able to pay for the 1.2 or the GM and want the creamier bokeh/look of the 1.4...
Your best lens review to date.
