I wholly agree with you both about the young generations living life through their phones. When ever we are on a car ride and the kids say they are bored I tell them to look out the window and see all the things they'd miss. On a side you and your wife have fantastic chemistry during theory time. It genuinely made me smile.

TA Outdoors Hi Mike as a kid brought up on a farm any spare time was spent in the countryside. My dad taught me a lot about birds their songs and I learnt a lot about the wildlife while building dens, making crude bows and arrows, fishing as well. Bird nesting which is not done anymore I even pressed flowers and all sorts of stuff. Many happy memories from that time regards Bill

When I was a kid we didn't even have internet. only 3 channels on the TV. The reason why I like this series so much is because we went outside to play. YES we built tree forts and had a blast. we used old wood/nails. no money to buy anything new ( we were 7-12 years old). Internet/social media is not really a good thing. Slow down and enjoy the outdoors. I always wanted a cabin like this. I'm 55 and I think it's time to be a kid again (I have been told for so long to grow up but in my heart I have always been a kid). Congrats on the new house and the baby. Cheers from Canada!!!

Thank you both so much for talking about this topic. It is really important and needs to be highlighted so much. As a parent myself It is something that I am very aware of and try my best to do things the old fashioned way a good bit of the time just so or children know there is a world out side technology and that everything does not have to be done witch a touch of a button. Very rewarding when you can achieve something by yourself.

Mike you are the reason I have taking up bushcraft/survival camping I love your videos and its refreshing to see you wife out with you! Thank you for all you do!
Now as for the younger generation and technology. Oh yes, it is definitely ruining society. Relationships are being ruined and social skills and have been completely lost. I can personally say I have horrible social anxiety and it's apart of the reason I love the idea of being outdoors. (To be away from my generation) but thanks to my wife I have no choice when it comes to being social and I am thankful for it. I have learned to put my phone down and just talk to people. And it has been great! Let alone the people I've been around have amazing stories. But again thank you Mike if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have found my passion for being in the Totally Awesome Outdoors!

I went to Glenfinnian to see the viaduct just in October. It wasn't too busy and I got to see the steam train. Places like that are always better in the off season. Plus, i enjoy the cold for hiking and such. Scotland is a magical place just before winter when all the coaches are parked.

I absolutely agree with you two on the whole internet and social media thing. I'm 17 years old and I don't own a phone. I spend a lot of my day in my workshop building classical guitars. I don't have any internet or pone in my workshop only the radio. I also go out once or twice a week fishing and bushcrafting. I am not for a single second trying to suggest here that I’m better than anybody ever because I’m really not, but I do notice that amongst other people of my age there is a lack of creativity and self-initiative. Many of them still have no idea what they want to become professionally. Also for example when I’m at the strain station waiting for the train to arrive people just can’t stay there for a minute without pulling their phones out and doing something. I have no problem at all doing nothing for almost hours sometimes just working through stuff in my brain. Anyways! Thanks for encouraging young people in your videos to go out more, I know how important it is! Keep up the great work!

Outstanding topic and spot on with your assessment. I happen to be a jack of most, master of none, and having watched the entire episode of your and your father building your beautiful getaway warmed this old mans heart. I’m a yank/ veteran and (unfortunately) a 19 year divorced dad, who was left alone, some. 2,500 miles away from the two sons he desperately loved. After having cared for my loving parents (60 years married and each reaching 90) until their passing, seven months apart, in 2014, I went homeless for four years. I’m being given another chance chance at living, and watching your vids, this being my second, is so encouraging. Cheers!

Talking to your theory, I work in a job where we are constantly having to talk to people and provide them an important service, and we have noticed that the newer generation who are coming into the job, around the age of 20, are struggling to talk to people and more often than not are saying inappropriate things, because they just don't know how to talk. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part this is the unfortunate case, and we all believe it is down to the over reliance on social media, and that being their main method of communication. Technology is a great thing, as long as it is used in a way that does not eradicate skills, it should be something that makes life better, not makes us unable to function without it!

    • @mawmawvee

That's true, Jonathan Blurton. It's what we do with the technology that makes it good, or bad and that relies upon the basic character of who a person is.

I agree 100% that social media is destroying society. I am 55 years old, we didn't have cable television, video games or cell phones but we had the time of our lives growing up. In the summer we played outside until the street lights came on or a parent yelled your name from the front porch. We never asked for a ride, our bicycles were our transportation everywhere and by the end of the summer the tires were bald. The kids today will never experience any of these things and that is a shame. I very much enjoy your videos, keep them coming brother.

The power of social media is destroying our fabric, but yet again it is rebuilding some of the things we've lost. Your You-tube (TA Outdoors) is showing a younger generation the things I (as a child of the 60's) learned threw Scouting and My father taking me camping. It is showing them that a video game is not all that's out there to do. Your fort, your pallet wood cabin, and the Bushcraft all open the minds of the young and the older, gives us a starting point to converse and comune with the world as once was being lost.

I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s was always outside camping and fishing. Also loved sitting around the kitchen table talking to the older people in my family. You learn a lot by doing so. I would tell young people to go up to older people and talk to them. I’m a truck driver and in all the 30 years I’ve been driving l haven’t had one young person ask me about my job, come up and look at my truck. As a kid I was very inquisitive. Kids please put down the phone you are missing out on life.

So happy to see that finally someone is speaking of this. Our younger generation has lost a lot of skills communicating with people and the older generation. I cannot stand what technology has done. Kids need to get their hands dirty in the dirt, ride a bike, go camping etc My husband and I control the amount of time our little one spends on computers and phone. We just spoke to her this Sunday and told her we want her to spend more time with us and enjoy the family even if it’s taking a walk, watching TV or just not saying anything. This is so important. Thank you on speaking on this. ❤️

when i lived alone, i had cable. i was not all that impressed. when my husband and i moved in together, we decided against cable and did not have internet for a LONG time, we only watched dvds so that we controlled what was viewed. our twin boys did not have facebook until they were in high school and were involved in many activities, and didnt have cellphones til their senior year. our daughter is a sophomore and still does not have either. the boys were not driving themselves to school until their junior year and it looks the same for their sister. kids do not need to grow up so fast. we tried to get the kids outdoors as much as possible when they were younger. the boys are so tall they cannot find adequate sleeping arrangements in a traditional camping environment and are not too hip on trying too hard(we hope that changes when they are parents). our daughter is truly turned on by your videos and loves the wilderness. but they all appreciate nature and recognize its importance which is what i hope for all children. keep up the videos.
you talk of these videos like you've been doing them for years, yet you do not seem to age.

I'm 61 years old. When I was growing up, all we had was the outdoors. Even FM radio wasn't used much. Our social media was talking, & playing board games. Our daily activities were riding our bikes (bicycles), playing army, in the winter when we had snow, we would make snow-forts, & have snowball battles, & make snowmen. In the summer we would go swimming, & boating. We didn't have cell phones. I was a Boy Scout. If we would have a solar flair that knocks out electricity out, I would be doing better then most from what I have learned in my lifetime. I enjoyed the video. BTW My wife likes your dog. She is glad to see you didn't crop his tail.

It's so hard for me too. I'm much older, about your dad's age. I am housebound. So, when I get out, it's a big adventure, and all I get to do is go to the doctor's. So there I am in the main office waiting area with all these different people there, and not only are ALL glued to their phones (young AND old) but if you say "Excuse me" to ask a question, they are actually annoyed to be "interrupted". It has seriously cut back on my 2 times a year fun of being outdoors.
With that all said, I think that is why Bush-craft and camping type videos are so popular. You get nature AND real interaction if there is more than one person in the video. Glad Emmy got to be there, and she sounds like a good sport. Best wishes to you both.

Hi mike, I am a 15 year old subscriber who has been subscribed for just over a year and I love it when you and your dad, or in this case your wife, have ‘theory time’! It really makes me think and opens my mind to other interpretations and ways of thinking. This ‘theory time’ in particular about how social media is destroying people and the younger generation such as myself more so. I totally agree with you about your point and unfortunately I am at fault as well as I can find it harder to speak to people in person than on message as I message people more than I do speak in person. I believe that going for a simple run or walk surrounded by the beautiful nature where you encounter other pedestrians really helps appreciate how you need to take a step back and appreciate what you have, not only dose it make you feel mentally and physically healthy and clean but it also gets you out and speaking to others due to you just saying “have a nice day” or “it’s a lovely day” when jogging past. I also just want to say thank you and that I really appreciate your TH-cam videos and inspiration and keep up the good work, have a great day all.

Social media only destroys those who make it their gods. My cell phone remains off unless I need to use it because I don't care to be connected to others by an electronic umbilical cord. I only have one God and He isn't social media.

I couldn't agree more with your theory. I see it everyday as an outdoor instructor, the younger generations have no clue about the world and the people around them. The saving grace is that there are folks like us out there who will encourage our younger ones to appreciate the benefits of switching technology off.

My biggest worry with social media, beyond people having unrealistic expectations for themselves and others, and apart from what happens to people when they think they can be anonymously cruel for no real reason other than that it’s easy, and that people are exposing reams of their private info to hackers...apart from those things, there is at least one entire generation that has never learned to converse with each other face to face. This means unbelievable social anxiety, lack of interactive skills to interview and do well in the workplace, a terrible vulnerability in being unable to properly interpret body language and facial expressions...the damage is profound. Add to that the feeling of aloofness from compassion and empathy...if it all disappeared tomorrow, we’d miss some conveniences, sure, and there would be a rough patch where people had to learn to be social creatures again, but I think we’d be far better off. Just my opinion, for what it’s worth. I’d like a world where everyone lives in the real world, and works to make it as good a place as possible, rather than avoiding it by escaping 24/7 into a fake world where nothing is what it seems.

This is a rampant destruction of the family and the values that used to be instilled upon the young ones. It has bred fear and broken faith. It's.up to each of us to teach our children by example. To be strong enough to put limits on their access to such like technology. Schools could play a supportive role with these limitations.

Catherine, it all boild down to parenting. Parents are raising their children. The public school system, pop culture, and social media is.

      @LoremIpsum1970 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Before social media became a 'thing', we worried that kids were suffering from high self esteem -- and that came from parenting and schooling, we went soft on kids, we don't prepare them for the 'real world' and just how shitty it really is. So, I'm not surprised people want to escape into a make-believe world, I certainly would if I were younger cause we sell them a dream and don't teach them how to survive if they don't reach that dream. The place you all nostalgically go on about doesn't exist anymore -- the world has changed, it ain't the 1950s no more. Unless you want to go live with the Amish. Or maybe a commune?

It is true that so many people in general need their phones. I am around the same age (30) and didn't have a cell phone until I was 22. I find myself being addicted to my phone just as anyone experiences, the difference is knowing when to put it away, and even sometimes leaving it behind. People are social animals, we are losing human interaction. I usually call my friends out for having their phones out when we are conversing.
When you are talking to someone, put your phone away. Do not hold it, don't keep glancing at it. Engage in conversation, make eye contact, read body language. This is how we communicate best.

Sorry I'm a bit late to this thread - I didn't find this video until today. Thank you so much for your theory - I couldn't agree more! I grew up in Amsterdam and every summer there would be coaches full of tourists who would look at the town through their cameras while they could all see it for real if only they'd drop their cameras a few inches! Consequently later they had no idea where they had been. A Japanese travel journalist thought that Paris was the capital of Brussels... And being out in the wild is so amazing! From age 10 my mother took us camping in the wild every summer and whenever we could outside of that time - those holidays were the best time of my life, so I'm delighted to see young people like you two enjoying it so much! Keep it up and I hope that little Eve will enjoy it just as much when she gets a bit older!

Could not be happier about this theory time. You both are on point. If people got away from social media and got out and did things the whole world would be better off. I live in the USA and sometimes when I'm out with friends they spend more time on the social media than carrying on a conversation with the people they are with. It's awful. I'm like you both where I was on the edge of the tech boom. Granted I spend time on social media and spend lots of time on youtube especially your channel but I find that what I watch on youtube is my escape from social media. Your channel is a great resource for getting away from everyday life and for learning about bushcraft. I watch your videos everyday after work to relax and learn. I'm not looking for any thanks but I will say that I appreciate what you do and the content you make and I hope you have great success with this channel. I fell into a lull in life and didn't know what to do for a hobby at 32 yrs old and I did 2 things. I got back into Paintball and started putting together a bushcraft kit and getting into the woods. My interest for bushcraft has come from your channel. Much love to you and your family and I can't wait for the next video.

She is his wife, spouse or partner, not his old lady! And, yes, the Internet has not been overseen by the parents to regulate how much they watch and what they watch. Hmmmm….just like television. Reality is so very much better than a picture. Don't try to be or look like someone else. Make yourself into what you truly want to be. Originality is very important. A little copying is OK but modify it a little bit. This is the struggle of the Ages.

It's sad to think that the poor are living richer than the rich these days. Because they can't afford smart phone or internet. But they don't get down about it because they get to see the world and all the wonders it offers. While the richer and more wealthy are depressed because they can't attain the false sense of of happiness that social media provides. I haven't been able to go out into the woods or nature for almost a year a half because of an accident I was in and it's a battle to keep myself from slipping into depression. Because I can't spend the time I use to with my children in the woods. So watching you and many other bushcraft channels keeps my spirits up. And I can't wait till I'm in better health to get back out there. You and many other have given me a bunch of great ideas thank you and God bless.

Love the channel! With regards to my two young children, Katie who is 6 and Riley who is 3, both do like to watch there programs on there own tablets but they are limited to an hour a day only. Both love exploring the outdoors and as i tackle pest control for a local farner/game keeper they both like to join me when I go about my duties after the pigeons, corvids or the grey squirrels. Quite often getting close encounter with other fantastic wildlife most recently being a small owl and then a kestrel. The great outdoors is the best place to be for any age.

Also, social media and the internet is a double-edged sword. Yeah you can pick up more bad things, find more crap stuff, you've more contact with negativity from negative people, etc. but you also benefit from it. I get to watch fun and educational youtube videos and channels (like yours!), instantly look up information for things I need, connect you with people you've not seen in ages, etc.
I guess the difference is what you do with that power. If I watch a video about the outdoors from TA Outdoors and afterwards just...stay in, that's kind of a waste itself, isn't it? Go out and apply what you learn, make a pallet house, cook some steak over a wood fire. I mean, you can also watch videos of games, play those games, but do go out after and talk to your friends. Talk about games. Rant about Diablo Immortal (but not toxic-ally, lol).
Nobody's saying you should stop spending time indoors. Just that if you spend too much inside, it's not good. You need some moderation in your life.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

Social media exaggerates it all. Think mean girls on steroids. It looks better in a photo. It gets done faster in a 30 minute video. Worse yet, the mistakes of youth cannot be forgiven or forgotten because they cannot be purged off the net.

I agree on the social media topic that you wondered in to, thats exactly why my 2 boys are "forced" of their phones and iPads are into the woods and our primitive summer vacation house, i really want them to experience nature the way i did as a kid, crawling in trees using your imagination while playing in the woods, it was amazing, and I do see them doing that when we're out there, they really do seem to forget the phones and the tablets/ipads, and thats just what nature does to people, i love your videos and I do hope that you keep on doing them.
    Much love from Denmark.
