      that was actually their second album. Their first album is called “the fourth world“ and was released under the band name Kara’s flowers. when they got dropped from their record label they changed their name to maroon and then Maroon 5 when their new label signed them because of a British band named Maroon. so they had already been a Bandan touring for five years when they wrote the material that became “songs for jane”. and they spent a long time honing that second batch of songs. I don’t know if they’re available on the Internet but in the tape trading circles back in the late 90s there were tons of early versions of those songs on old Kara’s Flowers demo tapes.

    Honestly I'd argue that Sam's Town outdoes Hot Fuss. Their debut is my favourite album of all time, yes, but I think that Sam's Town is definitely a more mature, coherent, and better crafted album from a technical and creative standpoint, with just as many incredible songs but with more thought and consideration given to each of them. I love how raw Hot Fuss is but nobody can deny that Sam's Town has it beat in being an emotional rollercoaster. It's especially creatively successful when you remember that it sounds absolutely nothing like Hot Fuss; doing a 180 in terms of sound, style, and influence between your first and second album is always a big risk, made even more challenging when your first is as commercially and critically successful and iconic as Hot Fuss, but The Killers really pulled it out of the bag when they made Sam's Town and it deserves just as much attention and appreciation as Hot Fuss gets. I'd argue the same for Day & Age, and Battle Born and Wonderful Wonderful also don't deserve the unfair hate they get either but to each their own.

    • @artvjon
      @artvjon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      As I said in the video, The Killers are one of my favorite bands, and I don't dislike any of their albums. It just means I believe that their debut is their best, although their other albums also have a lot of greatness about them (especially Sam's Town and Wonderful Wonderful)

      Huge Jacked Man thank you for saving me the time of composing my own comment with this exact same opinion. I saw “The Killers” in the thumb nail and got instantly worried. Each to their own, I get it, but when an album is fronting songs like Read My Mind, When You Were Young (which was nominated for best rock song), and For Reasons Unknown, it’s hard to put the album in any other place than best.

      TooTsaka I personally think Fallen is their best album but Self Titled and The Open Door are no slouches. Don’t sleep on the Self Titled album it has some really good songs on it. Lost Whispers (a B-sides album) has some great songs on it too and the two original songs on Synthesis are different but pretty good songs too.

    • @LizEllynMoore
      @LizEllynMoore 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I disagree. A lot of people have said that The Open Door is better and I actually believe that their self-titled album is the best. While I agree that Fallen is the most commercially viable album, it was their intention to steer away from the more mainstream stuff anyway. They still had hits with The Open Door and Evanescence so they still kept up their sound post-Fallen in my opinion.

    Third Eye Blind is another band that their debut album was such a masterpiece, and never lived up to their potential. Matchbox 20 would be another one that also had an incredible debut, and although the rest of their albums are not terrible, they were never as great as YOSLY

    EVANESCENCE!!! They was the first band I thought of when I read your headline. Their first album Fallen is amazing, and even stands out among the neo-rock-pop-punk revival of the early & mid 2000s. But intra-band turmoil struck, guitarist and co-songwriter Ben Moody flew the coop, and even though Amy Lee soldiered on and made a pretty good sophomore effort with The Open Door, the band never made anything even approaching the same universe as Fallen.

      @jonathanpetrucelli7733 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I Like Trains That makes no sense. First off, all music is noise so what you’re really trying to say is that it doesn’t sound pleasant to you. Just because it sounds like noise to you doesn’t mean it is actually noise. I’m not even a fan of any of their music, but their debut definitely has more artistic value than the commercialized rock they’re making today.

    • @iliketrains3495
      @iliketrains3495 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ah yes the smartarse metalhead who uses the "aLl mUsIc is nOIsE" comeback. Well music is meant to have an artistic value and honestly, early BMTH has none of that. Even though Amo is dodgy in places, Sempiternal and That's The Spirit are far better than their debut in almost all areas

    • @jonathanpetrucelli7733
      @jonathanpetrucelli7733 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I Like Trains You said their debut was noise. That is a very ignorant thing to say. If it was noise it would be considered noise music (which technically still is music) not metal. Their debut has more artistic value because they were closer to making something they wanted to make than making sellout music.

    I think from this side of the pond it’s interesting to see North America’s response to UK acts from 00s. We had NME magazine which brought attention to many bands but had a habit of slagging off bands after thejr second album’s first song. It’s like they got bored of the toys and were on to the next one.
    I think Bloc Party are definitely one of those bands smart enough not to just carry on with the indie sound that got them there. It wouldn’t last long and probably made more sense to carve out your core fans before you just got boring for all fans.

      Personally would put it at 5th or 6th.
      For me:
      1 Meteora
      2 Living Things
      3 Minutes to Midnight
      4 Hunting Party
      5 Hybrid Theory
      6 A Thousand Suns
      7 One More Light

    I would include Two Door Cinema Club here. They've yet to release an outright stinker, but Tourist History was their magnum opus, and they've never been able to get better than that album thus far.

    Big band that pops into my head for something like this: Bullet For My Valentine. I enjoy bits and pieces of their later discography, but I don't think anything they put out will ever top The Poison.
    Some other bands I feel never really topped their debut, but is really up for debate:
    ~Circa Survive
    ~Hollywood Undead
    ~La Dispute
    ~Seether
    ~Weezer

      Yeah, i’ve been disappointed to see they’ve yet to truly top that first album. Not that the others are hot trash or anything, they all have really good songs on each, but they keep going for a New Wave Revival shtick with each new album of theirs.
      I just wish they would experiment more and hopefully find something that works. Cause I feel like they were onto something with False Alarm but kinda floundered around in the middle.

    Some bands I'd put on here:
    Weezer (Fite me, Pinkerton fans)
    Imagine Dragons (They fell off HARD)
    Mumford & Sons (Not that they were ever amazing, but they've been getting worse and worse)
    Limp Bizkit (Hard to believe, but Three Dollar Bill, Yall$ is actually somewhat listenable)

    Pretty surprised Weezer's Blue Album wasn't on here. Granted, my knowledge of their discography is mainly limited to their singles and haven't given Pinkerton, the hipster darling, a full listen to say it's better than Blue album. But the debut album has their standout singles.

    • @thehighllama8101
      @thehighllama8101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weezer never topped or equaled the Blue Album. If you ever feel like giving another Weezer album a listen, I suggest the White Album; it's very good, but still doesn't reach the heights of the Blue Album.

    • @wpicmaniscool

      Pinkerton (imo and the opinion of many other weezer fans) definitely equalled blue. They're both great albums and classics, but weezer imo should not be on the list

  • @stiiimes

    Thing is: a band's "debut album" is likely a collection of their top notch material dating as far back as pre-band riffs from individual members or ever previous bands. They've used the very best of years worth of work to stand out & get to the top, but once they're on top they have to start cranking out new records ever 1-2 years. The demand simply outstrips the natural songwriting supply.

    • @franks8462

      I do feel like Ed got lucky + came out when it did. Peak Tumblr culture seeping into the mainstream made that happen. His debut (an album I love) isn't that great or groundbreaking. The writing is passable, and the themes of rocky relationships and pining for love was a bit exhausting over a while. X was a lot better ( I just wish he would stop rapping. He does not have a single good song where he showcases his "rapping" skills).
      On the topic of Imagine Dragons... I agree. Not saying that their debut was great, but there were a handful of gems in it. Nothing they've released since has been interesting enough to make me even want to invest my time and listen.

    Bullet for my Valentine could easily go on this list as well. Albums after their debut have been mixed to damn near unlistenable. It sucks because they’re one of my favorite bands of all time. But The Poison is just such an amazing album and they’ve never come close to that level since.

    • @iliketrains3495

      I Like Trains oh quite the contrary lol there’s stuff I like on every BFMV album. The first 4 songs on Scream, Aim, Fire are AMAZING. Fever has quite a few jams on it. Temper Temper...only has one good song on it (Not Invincible) and it’s a damn bonus track lol Venom has a few good songs as well and I’ll have the unpopular opinion here and say that the entire B side to Gravity, I actually really like. The point I was trying to get across is that, as a whole, Bullet haven’t put out a record that was as solid and consistent as their first.

    • @pazoni
      @pazoni 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@semipilot925 I wouldn’t call their albums after poison mixed tho, Scream was awesome even if it’s more thrash, Fevers pretty good, Temper sucks no good song at all, Venoms mad underrated, hot take I like Gravity especially when they play the songs live, then their new album was actually insane, felt like a mix of Venom and Gravity.
