    INFO: To me it seems like the Pixies were one of those bands that came at just the right point in time. They began their journey in the second half of the 80s and although they didn’t experience a booming success, they did have a big influence on bands like Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Pavement and many others. In some instances their success have been compared to The Velvet Underground. They were ahead of the trend. Or maybe they created the trend itself? The one were artists blended metal, punk and noise with classic rock in a mix of extreme dynamics and stop-start timing.

    • @christiangasior4244
      @christiangasior4244 5 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Her basslines are actually very integral to the music as well. Simple but effective. It's the Peter Hook effect. Beginner with a knack for the instrument. She is not exactly Peter Hook, but she has that same creativity that makes many technically limited players like Cobain, Johnny Ramone/Thunders, and sort of Tom Scholz so great. Tom Scholz played classical piano as a child but he didn't start playing guitar until he was in his 20's at MIT, not long before he began work on the titular first album. Boston's first album is underrated. Too often written off as AOR radio friendly over-produced slop. The dude made one of the best sounding albums ever mostly in his basement. His guitar overdub symphonies were superior to those of Queen's in that his harmonies were just so perfect. Brad Delp's voice is also underrated. His range was incredible, and he could hold a high note at full blast for a long time. All the dubs are so perfectly synchronized that it sounds almost alien, and it was definitely unlike anything people had heard before. Also helped that he was an awesome songwriter and that every song on the album either is a hit or could be a hit. Most were hits. Also he was a very nerdy, unrock figure for such a supposedly throwaway radio band. I've heard he is a litigious dick, which is a shame, especially as he has done a lot to help human rights and more importantly, animal rights. Then again, Brad Delp was the one videotaping his gf's sister surreptitiously by installing a cam in her room so he could do god knows what. When she found the cam, Brad didn't take it too well and gassed himself to death. So maybe Tom is the only sane one. Or maybe we're all a little bit cray. I'm AJ Benza, and this has been another rambling comment. Remember, sometimes you are being watched, so keep your eyes open and your balls powdered.

    • @coreycox2345
      @coreycox2345 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Tom Scholz's parents were our next-door neighbours in Scottsdale. They were very proud of him. When quite young, he put sandbags at their basement windows so as to not bother the neighbours and recorded his first album all by himself, and then hired a band to tour with him. It was funny because when they played in Phoenix, some groupies thought he might be staying with his parents and knocked on my bedroom window in the middle of the night saying "Tom. Tom."

    • @christiangasior4244
      @christiangasior4244 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's awesome. Were they lower, middle, upper middle class or...? Just curious. That was very considerate of him to put sandbags up. Brad would've set up cameras facing in his neighbor's windows. I would've pretended to be Tom and hope one of them bought into it. A long-haired wig or weird mullety wig might have done the trick depending on when this was. A lot of groupies are doped up or drunk and might buy into it. Lol just playing. Did you tell them he wasn't there, or just ignore them? Did you see if they were cute?

I saw the Pixies Alec Eiffel video on MTV one night and was blown away. It was 1992 and the Seattle invasion was in high gear. I went to the record store and bought Trompe Le Monde. It didn't take long before I heard Wave of Mutilation in a movie I believe is titled Pump up the Volume. I never watched the whole movie. My girlfriend was watching it while I was in the garage playing guitar with my bass player at the time. I walked in right as the part with Wave of Mutilation playing. I loved it. It's always terrible when great bands break up, but losing Deal was a deal-breaker* for most Pixie fans. I believe there are critical elements of certain bands that make or break them. While David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen made Van Halen great, Michael Anthony made them _unique._ Same with Pixies' Black and Deal.
    I will say that leaving the Pixies was Kim's best decision. Her creative energy was stifled until she started her band The Breeders - which is a PHENOMENALLY underrated band. I've also seen them live many times and they never disappoint.

So yeah that’s more songs than I thought, scratch that part. But yeah Kim Deal didn’t know her place and she didn’t know how to keep her mouth shut. Good for her 😊.

      Get a copy of their anniversary version of "Last Splash" - I think it's called "LSXX." It's a 3-disc set. One of the discs is filled with rough and edited versions of the album's songs that are not worth listening to, IMO. But they have one disc in there of singles that were released on EPs around that time, filled with some real gems.
      If you put a gun to my head to force me to choose the top two songs they came out with, I'd go with "Safari" (about the "hunt" to find a decent person for a relationship) and "Iris" (a song about the menstrual cycle, oddly enough.) What made the Pixies so good(in my opinion) is the different energy levels of the band members. For example, Debaser is a relatively straight forward rock song until Francis starts screaming, and then when Deal adds the harmony that is lilting it becomes really awesome. So many of their songs have these multiple tracks that come together with differing intensity levels layered within the same song. - If I was to request a band to look at that I have not seen on your list, I'd ask for the Stone Roses. They didn't put out a lot, but they are an influential transitional Manchester band that has always had a large cult following.

    The Pixies started as an acclaimed independent Band from Boston. Them and Throwing Muses were singed to hip UK label 4AD. Gradually Pixies built and even briefly starred. Throwing Muses sold enough but never had mainstream success. Pixies did US tour in 88 with The Cure. Dream Bill.

    Bossanova is very underrated, and maybe their most intense album. The Happening is a prime example of the album’s extreme intensity. Trompe Le Monde is another solid effort, albeit the soundtrack of a band falling apart. Because the Pixies had Gil Norton as a producer, the band ended its impressive run with momentum left to carry their legacy forward.

      Stone roses maybe. Oasis is like U2 in that there’s good music there but you wanna kick the shit out of bono no matter how much he helps Africa. Wanna do that with both brothers, mainly the less talented one who was the main instigator. Forget the name. But yeah holy shit they’re overrated and I use that term sparingly. Wonderwall sucks, don’t look back in anger is good, and champagne supernova is pretty good. Pretty sure they did other stuff as I’ve heard the albums, but nothing stuck out. And this isn’t just my opinion. It’s objective. So if that came off a bit douchey and arrogant, that’s why.

    • @LucasLinder
      @LucasLinder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand, their music is not everyones cup of tea, but cool!
      In case you'dd want to try to get into them, a great couple of songs to start with would be
      1. Rooster (Dirt)
      2. I Stay Away (Jar Of Flies)
      3. All I Am (Rainier Fog)
      4. Black Gives Way To Blue (same album name)
      5. Man In The Box (Facelift)
      (6. Them Bones (Dirt), my personal favorite song)
      Dirt is their most praised album out there, so the whole album would be a tip.
      Some keywords about the band would probably be :
      1. Versatile
      2. Atmospheric
      3. Drugs (The destructive part)
      4. Phoenix (Rising from the ashes)
      5. Jerry Cantrell (The mastermind)
      Their story of the band is full of tragedy, success, comedy, self-destructiveness, come backs and determination.
      Even though I don't always listen to the bands and artists you make videos about, I really like the depth you put into perspective.
      I actually gave some bands a chance after seeing your videos.
      And now im a fan of :
      Tool, Mac DeMarco, Queens of the Stone Age, David Bowie and Mastodon.
      So keep up the good work and we'll see in the future if a "Understanding AIC" pops up.
      Cheers from Sweden! 😁

But yeah plenty of people who are worthy music fans don’t like Alice In Chains that much. I do but I can see why some wouldn’t. Some don’t like drug songs or songs that are mostly minor key sludge light metal about depressing shit. Their best asset was their vocal harmonies which were unique and inimitable , god knows the new band tries, and of course Laynes godly pained wail. Good instrumentalists too.

      Hey man, I love what you do and don't take this the wrong way but please, do yourself a favor and open your mind to Bjork. Her music is braver and bolder than a lot of rock music out there. After all, the name of the channel is Lie Likes Music, isn't it?

      @JezBollah 667 No, they were not synth pop. New wave and post punk isn't the same as synth pop

    You forgot to mention that their 2004 reunion tour was one of the most (if not the most) profitable of all time! It wasn't all trouble!

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh i didn't know that. Sure enough, they sold out in heaps in that case.

    • @antonioaguiar5071
      @antonioaguiar5071 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep they won a lot of fans while they were separated, when they did the reunion tour much more people showed up in comparison to the crowds they were geting in the 90's. Anyways, as always great video man! Keep 'em coming!

      @@LieLikesMusic maybe do something on someone like the Libertines or bloc party. They both have distinct sounds and back stories.
