A number of people kept shouting for him to play Vienna which Midge felt was disrespectful to the occasion. However he did eventually play it just to keep them quiet.
Magic Hugo (and Smiley), many thanks for uploading this :) Midge is a class act always but this is worth the admission alone for his patter at the start ::cool:: :)))
He did a wonderful song just after this which he wrote for Philo, then to keep the rowdy element quiet he was reluctantly forced into playing a great version of Vienna which wasn't really appropriate on the night. Were goin to put up some stuff of Midge with The Lizzy Boys (Get Outta Here and possibly Rosalee) and a great version of Whiskey in the Jar with Thin az Lizzy, and maybe Baby drives me Crazy as a contrast to their version with Robbo.
The loud arena rock crowd sadly many miss the depth and beauty of this peace. One of the beautiful gems from Vagabonds. Midge was pushing against that. That's the wonderful element of them as the original trio, Phil's depth and poetry was more on display. It got pushed back to appeal to arena rock sensibilities. Plus, then there's Eric Bell which brought out Phil's depth with his playing. In short, love Midge's respect for a lesser known gem from the Lizzy early years.
My favourite track on Vagabonds, I guess... Mr. Ure seemed to put it in perspective in some ways, but I am surprised that this could be billed as 'overlooked'
Nice, but he sings "with happy heart you walk beside any sadness, sorrow or gloom" when the actual lyric is "with happy heart you wipe aside any sadness, sorrow or gloom". Just saying. Great song. Midge is good. Towards the end of the version on Vagabonds, Eric plays incredible harmony guitar, paving the way for Scott and Robbo.
Hey Midge ! why Geldof and you didn't invite Phil to the live aid concert ? just 6 months before he die. And when he really needed help from his "friends". or were you too occupied to get money and fame ?.
u right, but don't use word like "dickhead ", so i would have loved to see Phil, at least, play bass on a song, Many bands, singers played just one,. What did he think when he saw all the english pop invited ? even the very bad and.ephemeral of them, was he sad ? did he take another shoot of heroin, i can't imagine that it did not hurt him. sorry my bad english
Midge regrets it. Phil was in "no fit state"? Why was he still doing demos and performances? That is a copout . They wanted the 1. biggest selling acts and 2. Popular contemporary acts... What baffles me is the inclusion of the Boomtown Rats.. It is very hypocritical to have a shit band there. And Status Quo?? Give me a fucking break... Phil should've been invited. Without Phil, nobody would've heard of Geldof or Ure. Nuff said.. No disrespect to you, I'm just venting here.. 😊
Phil and Gary were in the charts in May 85 I think with out in the fields...they could have done a set at live Aid if asked. Ok Phil was not in the best shape but check out his performance with Gary from this period on TH-cam. Saying that I like midge and he himself said he regrets not asking Phil to perform.
Sorry, there's something in my eye. Phil was such an incredibly sensitive songwriter, poetic, lyrical. I love him. Thank you Midge
The mark of a great song, It never gets old.
Midge saw Philip in his true self not just a rock star but a great song writer and poet.. ❤
Nicely done, Midge.
Love it!! People need to shut up and let him play....great job!!!
A great tribute to Phil.
My fave song. Vagabond of the Western world
What a version...

Phil. This is inspired by a true story.
Phil was the son of a young Irish girl and a black cricket player. .
RI.P. Brother, still sorely missed
Why was he so pissed...?
Love the performance anyway! :-)
