Night shift. Austin PD. Fiance had left that summer. Driving home up MoPac on any winter morning at 6am, just trying to keep my head together, listening on KGSR to this recording at Anderson Fair. You never hurt the way you do when you are 20something, with your whole life in front of you, and your first true love breaks your heart. 25 years later, I remember. This song is incredible.
I stumbled on this recording in the early 90s, driving coast to coast, in my early 20s lost, broken hearted... became the soundtrack of my life for many years. Great sadness to read the news today.
6 weeks in 1986 I listened to this everyday, in tears, lamenting the loss, Now we have been married 30 years. i remember those 6 weeks with tenderness! Thank you Nanci! RIP!
There was a time in my life that I had this album on repeat and this song in particular made me feel less alone. Thank you, Nanci, for being such a light in the darkness.
Girl you think there's not a bunch of you out here?.. one of the missions I have left (only 67) so hope 4 more. A freaking Nanci statue in Austin. Boy do I miss her.
I'm from Ireland. In 1986 I was 15. Trying to be cool. I was obsessed with U2 and Thin Lizzy, Boomtown Rats etc. Starting to try and chat up girls and thinking I was the cheese. I remember my sister buying some stupid album by some singer I'd never heard. It was a big deal that she actually had the money to by an album, and I was disgusted that she had wasted it. I clearly remember hearing this song coming from her room and thinking what the hell is this. I waited till she went out and went in to see this stupid album. I put it on and ended up staring out the window, looking out across the fields in a trance. A few years later in around 1990 I left home and moved to the UK. A couple of weeks later I bought my very first CD. 'One Fair Summers Evening' by Nanci. The following week I got The Joshua Tree. I fell in love with Nanci that day staring out the window, and I've loved her ever since. RIP Nanci 💚
I became a big Nanci Griffith fan back in the 1980's and love her music. No one could perform better than Nanci in a live concert, she was a wonderful story teller and would put her audience in awe. Really miss Nanci, so glad we have plenty of video and recordings of her.
Angels really do walk among us and Nanci Griffith is one. Mere words cannot express how much her sweet words and music have meant to me over the years. Her words are poetry and music, divine. I never want to hear any of her songs sung by anyone but her, there is only one Nanci Griffith and I thank God for her. We are so lucky to have her. So darned lucky.
My wife and I listened to her music at length when we were dating. It is hard to believe it’s been 27 years ago falling in love with this music playing in the background.
Every time I watch her sing my heart breaks all over again. I know she never married again, but I hope she had wonderful loves in her life. She's so lovable, and deserved to be loved well on a deeper, more personal level.
The word perfect, over used, yup. Not in the case of Nanci, hasn't ever been or will be anyone as perfect as my gal Nanci. Talent beauty charm honesty .. I haven't stopped crying since she left.
It's a southern road west of New Orleans I'm fightin' off a cold From these winter rounds Houston, she's just around the corner But I think I'll stop off here in Lafayette Lord and have me another round I've been workin' in corners all alone at night Pullin' down whiskey Keepin' my eyes away from the lights I'll never be a fool but I will gamble foolishly I've never let go of love Till I lost it in my dreams I don't want to go to sleep 'Cause I just might dream I'm stronger now, there was a man in my hometown He sang so pretty I'm glad he turned my head around But I'd forgotten how to play a one night stand Lord I didn't have a word to say Just holdin' that stranger's hand I've been workin' in corners all alone at night Pullin' down whiskey Keepin' my eyes away from the lights I'll never be a fool but I will gamble foolishly I've never let go of love Till I lost it in my dreams I don't want to go to sleep 'Cause I just might dream These city streets at five in the mornin' I would've stopped to phone you But I'm almost home At my back door There's a porch light that's shinin' I just don't mind livin' here by myself If I leave it on I've been workin' in corners all alone at night Pullin' down whiskey Keepin' my eyes away from the lights I'll never be a fool but I will gamble foolishly I've never let go of love Till I lost it in my dreams I don't want to go to sleep 'Cause I just might dream I don't want to go to sleep 'Cause I just might dream Don't want to go to sleep You know I sure can dream And I sure can dream Sure can dream
Close to being my favorite. I was working in corners way back in the day : ) and could so relate to this song-BEAUTIFUL!!! This version with just Nanci and her guitar is flawless!! We miss you Nanci!
Driving back to Bragg from DC for a deployment, hauling ass at midnight on 95 through Virginia trying to get back to base as soon as I could, This is what helped keep me awake too.
Gregory Dennis & leapsplashafrog DGDGAD with capo 2 = A major She plays two chord shapes unusual but you can see them and work it out from this tuning. Lots of open strings played
@@houseofguelph8825 Thanks just trying to learn guitar (at 67), would love to play many of Nanci’s tunes, but with her grace and dignity and story telling skills, I will fall so short at my best. God her music l; it’s hard to separate the beauty of her soul, from the beauty of her guitar playing and the beauty of her amazing words and story telling…..so much peace in this angel.

funny how hard a heartbreak is in your 20s. Your heart will never let you get that hurt again. Life.

This song just kills me every time. Watching her is mesmerizing. Must be one of the most beautiful recordings of all time.
Listening to this in 1988; that's when I fell in love with Nanci. Rest easy girl. We've all lost something magical now that you've gone. 💔

What talent! One singer, one guitar, one song. It's perfection.
I can't believe she's gone.
Such an under appreciated artist. Her songs hit right at my heart.

Stunning, such beautiful flowing guitar, and that emotive voice ,always with such authenticity, from the soul.
It's a southern road west of New Orleans
I'm fightin' off a cold
From these winter rounds
Houston, she's just around the corner
But I think I'll stop off here in Lafayette
Lord and have me another round
I've been workin' in corners all alone at night
Pullin' down whiskey
Keepin' my eyes away from the lights
I'll never be a fool but I will gamble foolishly
I've never let go of love
Till I lost it in my dreams
I don't want to go to sleep
'Cause I just might dream
I'm stronger now, there was a man in my hometown
He sang so pretty
I'm glad he turned my head around
But I'd forgotten how to play a one night stand
Lord I didn't have a word to say
Just holdin' that stranger's hand
I've been workin' in corners all alone at night
Pullin' down whiskey
Keepin' my eyes away from the lights
I'll never be a fool but I will gamble foolishly
I've never let go of love
Till I lost it in my dreams
I don't want to go to sleep
'Cause I just might dream
These city streets at five in the mornin'
I would've stopped to phone you
But I'm almost home
At my back door
There's a porch light that's shinin'
I just don't mind livin' here by myself
If I leave it on
I've been workin' in corners all alone at night
Pullin' down whiskey
Keepin' my eyes away from the lights
I'll never be a fool but I will gamble foolishly
I've never let go of love
Till I lost it in my dreams
I don't want to go to sleep
'Cause I just might dream
I don't want to go to sleep
'Cause I just might dream
Don't want to go to sleep
You know I sure can dream
And I sure can dream
Sure can dream
Between Nanci and Joni we have the best female singer songwriter guitarists imho

No, and it's driving me crazy. Did you figure it out?
I think I just figured it out. I'm pretty sure it's DGDGAD and capo 2!
And now I'm just seeing the comment from a year ago. Doh.
Oh well, that was a fun exercise.
