  • I know Nanci Griffith fans have been wanting this for a while and since I was devastated by her recent passing, I decided to post it in her honor. This video came from an old VHS tape that was copied from an even older VHS tape, so don't expect great quality-- but it's better than nothing, right?
The VHS to digital transfer was done courtesy of an EasyCAP device and a wonderful program called Debut Video Capture Software from NCH Software. Thanks to ACL for introducing me to Nanci Griffith.
I had met Nanci several times and she was a warm, sweet and beautiful person who affected my life more than she ever knew. God sent an angel for us to love for 68 years before he took her back home.
Thank you for so much, Nanci; rest well.

In 1985, I had come home after a day's work, showered, made dinner, sat down in front of the TV that just happened to be tuned to my PBS station ... and this show came on. Within a few days, I had purchased her first three albums and, over the years, continued to collect them all as they were released. I absolutely love this woman. Thank you, Nanci, for all the beautiful music, your lovely voice, and the lyrical stories from your heart and soul that you shared with us.

Can I ask where you live (I write a journal and will not post ANYTHING you tell me online !) I am in Newfoundland, Canada--an island in the North Atlantic ocean.......are you in Hawaii ?

@@VideoGuyHawaii I'm writing an article for an Artist Spotlight series called... If you haven't heard Nanci Griffith yet what are you waiting for? I was including quotes from fans to describe her enthusiasm and obituary, and I came across what you wrote and thought it was really good. So thought I would ask. I am a current student at UMASS Lowell. I can just leave a last name initial as well if you prefer. Thanks.

I remember going to see her in Boulder, Colorado in 1986. I loved her music so much and was hoping she could pull me out of the worst broken heart and darkest depression any human could have. I got there early and shared a table with a nice couple who took pity on me. Her music was just enough to save me, and to boot, when she asked if Mary Margaret was there with her husband, my two new friends stood up!
You couldn't make this stuff up

Thanks for going to the trouble to dub this from your old VHS tape. My local PBS station last night aired a rerun of the Austin City Limits season finale from last February -- a compilation of some of Nanci's best performances on the show. It included only a couple of songs from this set, so thanks again for posting the whole thing.

I loved her and the Austin music since the 1907's, that dates me. My dad was in or lead bands from the 1961 in and near there and all that. I was lucky to meet many of these pickers. I loved that she was as down to earth, with a big heart as she seemed, but she did have big dreams. Love the way she never changed, and always sung with that Texans twang, that we all loved...

Thank you for the effort in getting this up here. Nancy was surely a unique artist, a singular lady.
Philip Donnelly passed in late 2019, just a few months before his lifelong friend John Prine and sadly then Nancy herself.
Philip was instrumental in expanding Nancy's reach and popularity in Ireland and Northern Europe. Others helped too as JP's wonderful speed of the sound arranged by Donnelly made big in Europe,
Wonderful folk, country and RnR legends that were not afraid to try something different.
Rest gently in peace, each and every one of them 🙏🙏❤️

Both have that rare quality of recordings one never tires of hearing. I saw Nanci perform many times and met her once. A truly enigmatic person and performer. Felt a sense of betrayal from my local fm radio station for never introducing me to Nanci. Fortunately I found her on late-nite ACL after a few shots of Jack, and was immediately smitten and transported to other times and places. The radio station that had introduced me to Gordon Lightfoot and Tom Rush, John Prine and others, failed due to the death of one dj who insisted on playing artists who didn't fall into categories

I grew up in Austin, lived there from 1980 to 1995. It's always nice to go back for a day or two to visit family, but when I see the city, feel its vibes, it's not the same place I remember, not the same place I fell in love with. Time was you'd drive Ranch Road 2222 out to Hwy 620 and take a left. A mile or two down the road was a little watering hole perched atop a cliff overlooking Lake Travis called the Oasis. Great place to have drink and watch the sun set. Now it's as tacky as an Indian casino. Used to be able to look at downtown and see the Capitol dome and the UT Tower. Now it's forest of cranes. Local bands would play AquaFest while and mom and pop eateries fed the crowds. Now the corporate media empires descend upon the soulless spectacle of South by Southwest. Hearing the music I grew up on, seeing Nanci Griffith in her prime makes me realize just what a special place Austin was at just this moment, a moment those of us who were there were lucky to live through, but will probably never come again.

15:30 - one of my favourite Nanci Griffith songs

  • @fishhuntadventure
    @fishhuntadventure 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The intro here says she combines folk and country. Well I guess she drifted into the country genre fairly well, but the folk part? I know she wanted that and roamed on those stages quite a bit but her shows went way past and beyond folk in instrumental quality and musicianship. Folk generally isn’t very complex or evocative. Nanci was evocative, complex, and theatrical in a professional yet endearing manner instead of merely strumming chords in a minor and croaking out position statements.
Listening to this again I’m noticing how familiar and powerful these songs are. Like a New Year’s hit parade radio show with all those old, big hits. While Nanci’s songs never found their way there they mean more and sound better to me.
She opened for Emmylou Harris at the Capitol Theatre in Concord NH about 1988 and I was there. I’d never heard those kinds of lyrics before, was mesmerized by the vocals. Been a fan ever since.
This is Nanci at her best.

Yes. And this was taped about a year before Lovett's debut album.

The guy harmonizing with black sweater and curly hair no glasses to the left of Nancy... didn't he become a very famous Country singer and married an also famous movie star and can't remember her name either, maybe it was Julia Roberts... but maybe not? 16:52 I forgot his name. It sure looks like him. So nice of you hadji828 to create this video! Nancy as usual was WOW!

This is the only time I’ve ever seen footage of her playing a dreadnought guitar…..what appears to be a Martin D-28. She of course used a small body Taylor for most of her career. Looking good and sounding good as always!

There was a Guild guitar pictured on the Last of the True Believers album -- a lot of 80s singer-songwriters played them. The Taylors came later.

Some Nanci Griffith is ALWAYS better than none! That's so cool that you got to meet her. What was the occasion?

It was in Madison, Wisconsin after a show from her "Clock Without Hands" tour, in Chicago around 2001 after a "Concert For A Landmine Free World" show (I was also lucky enough to meet some other headliners from that show) and way back around 1992 or so in Chicago during a Voters For Choice benefit.
