    Having done this myself I would at least recommend shucking one carefully and keeping the box. I was really thankful I did when I got some 4TB drives last year and one died after just a few days and then another a couple months later. It just made returning them and the exchange so much easier.

    Easy way to disable 3.3 v pin is use a short SATA extension or splitter wire that only has 4 wires (2 black 1 red and 1 yellow), splitters with 5 wires (i.e. they have an orange wire) will not disable the 3.3v

All my routers, cable modem & ups are rack mount, pretty much like a small business.

    Real feedback. No point in making a video that you do not provide an ounce of insight. This video would have been valuable if you showed how to open the drive, which pin to disable in the event the drive won’t function, or just simply been entertaining. All of these things would have been figured out by a layman ripping apart a drive.

      Corkymcbutterpants- I’m aware of that moment in the video. Still a time wasting if I have to wait until 1:38 to figure out how to use a pocket knife to break plastic. The white label drives also do not work in all computers, if the 4th sata power pin provides power, then it disables the drive, and it won’t spin up. Easy to fix with tape but he also made no mention of that either.

    • @cb253

      @@CorkyMcButterpants Actually I made my intent clear. Feedback is given for the purpose of improving future outcomes. Facts don't care about your feelings. Grown-ups in society feed and thrive off of feedback. If I told him that I didn't like the sound of his voice, that would be useless feedback, if I told him his video was lacking specific substance than he can use that for improvement. You viewed the feedback as passive aggressive and negative, I'm sure a person of his caliber grew from it.

    So last Blackfriday season. I did the old gift card "careful removal " of three 8tb Best Buy Easystore 8tb drives and swapped them into my 5bay Drobo. Then I installed the 2tb drives back in the Easystore enclosures and sold them on Craigslist for $40 each since I had no real use for them. So that I paid about $95 each to upgrade from 2tb to 8tb drives. But his method does take much less time and effort.

      It's usually not an issue if you are using a SAS bay system, or some sort of hot swap drive bays (like on the Roswill 4U case). If you are installing it in some sort of standard tower you will need a MOLEX female to SATA male cable(s) per drive. Or short that pin, or whatever. I lucked out cause I have the same 24 bay server as Zues, and also the same Roswill 4U 12bay hotswap case that Jason has. I was a head of him for a bit there on total usable storage on unRAID, but he may have caught up, or passed me by now. :)

    In case you want to know what model drive you got before shucking you can run CrystalDiskInfo from windows or just connect the drive via USB to Unraid and it should show you the model. If it doesn't, you can run either of these commands in a Linux terminal or the Unraid terminal.... ls -lah /dev/disk/by-id/ or hdparm -I /dev/sdX1 | grep 'Model\ Number' (replace the x in sdx to whatever drive letter the USB drive was assigned). I found this info on Reddit a while ago but unfortunately, I can't find the link to the post anymore to give the person credit.

    You could split the partition of the 10 terabyte drives so you have any terabyte and a 2 terabyte / whatever's leftover.
    but I imagine you've already replaced them if you're going to do it at all.
    Specifically you could make the one terabyte drive the default backup, even when you partition 8 of the terabyte drives out you make sure that the two terabytes leftover are the faster ones on the edge of the disk.
    if you don't know I'm talking about there's programs that scan of the speed of all of the sectors on the drive, and because it spins at 7200 RPM or whatever the ones physically on the edge of the disc spin faster giving it a faster speed.

    • @ryanwakebradtelle8682

    I tried to post this to reddit but perhaps because new user there not posting.
    Just curious if anyone has run into case where they shucked an EasyStore 10TB (WDC WD100EMAZ-00WJTA0) and found the optical cable was missing. Just odd. This is the 2nd EasyStore that I've shucked in the last couple of days and just noticed that. looked around on the floor, etc and didn't see anything.
    Guess must be a QC issue with WD in Thailand as the box was sealed as received from BestBuy. I don't need the light flashing on this particular drive since I shucked it and worst case I guess if I ever had to send back to WD I can take the optical cable from the first shucked drive and rebuild it (however Jason from Byte My Bits said he sent the bare drive back and they sent him a WD MyBook 10TB).
    Anyway just finished doing an extensive examination attached to the computer and shucked the drive and now in my NAS running badblocks and SMART tests on the two drives.
    I have a 3rd one to shuck but I'm out of room in my NAS so I'll keep it as a desktop drive until I have to replace one in the NAS.

    • @mark2220
      @mark2220 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SATA ports become scarce when your server grows. You'll quickly start spending money on extra controller cards and a chassis with the mounting space to accommodate twice the drives on servers with lots of storage. This also introduces twice as many points of failure as before for the same space. Other than that though, with a small server it would work just fine.

    • @spawnlink
      @spawnlink 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mark2220 With 2.5" drive speeds USB3 isn't bad and one can buy sata multipliers pretty cheaply. But yes, it's a balance. I've a 12 x 8TB + several other drives and it's just one 4 port SATA card with 4 4 bay ESATA enclosures plus some USB3 2.5in drives. A 7 port, two controller USB3 pcie with a couple powered hubs would probably work similarly with all 2.5in drives.

    There is a Blue Iris setting per camera that is something like "decode only when needed" which DRASTICALLY reduces CPU utilization. Try that first.

    Thanks for the video Jason. As always, very entertaining. How much space are you up to now on Zeus? I was gonna buy a couple of those 10TBs for my own unRAID server, but I can't justify spending money on drives when I still have 18TB free.

    I have been running my plex server of my gaming rig for months now, and I want to get something less powered. It is only going to be me using it while I am at work so I do not need alot of encoding. Would you recommend a qnap nas or synology ds418?

    So I have shucked my first hard drive. I have only tested in a dockting station, where it works. Does that mean I don't have to worry about the third pen or can I only test it directly in a computer?
    I can't test it for about a week or so, so I'm planning to get some more hard drive in the mean time...

    • @dlloyd6300
      @dlloyd6300 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That does NOT mean that you don't have to worry as the power connector inside of the dock probably does not power that pin anyway. You may still have issues installing into the PC with an actual SATA power connector.

    For virtualization proxmox and a real raid1 or raid10 is better than unraid , unraid writes can become a problem for vm's. I use unraid for cheap protected storage 😊🔆🔆🔆

      my trick is to cleanly remove at least ONE drive from its enclosure and keep it and the parts. You can then always reassemble it and send it in for warranty.
