    Keeping a simple spreadsheet or drawing of your drive shelf with /dev/sda,/dev/sdb, etc. or Serial # is the easiest solution. A little prep work goes a long way when it comes to maintenance down the line!

    hey FYI
    since you're using a hotswap case/slots there is a feature in unraid to spin up individual disks. Thus you can see via the drive activity which on it actually is without guessing. and even if your server is in a seperate location, you can just do it from your phone.

    something i noticed messing around with unraid if you wanted to is to take a screenshot of your drives because it lists them by Serial Number then shut her down and pull the drives 1 by 1 and mark them as the serial number is written on the drive label.

    ACTUALLY, it turned out to be Nov 2020 when BB had 14 TB WD “easystore” models for $189.99/ea which turned out to be white label 5400 CMR EDFZs! Two years later (Nov 2022) they had inflated to $199.99 and contained white label 7200 CMR EDGZs. ALL of them carry a 2 yr warranty… shuckin’ can turn out for the better 👍

    You know, you can easily tell which drives are which because Unraid tracks by SERIAL NUMBER of the drive, it reports the serial number in the gui and you can query the devices at the command line. Every drive has the S/N printed on it. Also, before you put a new drive into an Unraid server, always preclear it and for a new parity drive I usually do minimum 3 cycles of preclear (pre-read, zero, post-read, and verify), this exercises the drive thoroughly and helps prevent putting a prematurely failing drive into the parity position. Also, you don't get any safer swapping one parity out vs the other, the array is still unprotected until parity is rebuilt. You should have swapped both parities at the same time.

    Loved this video. Hadn't seen this done. But, what's problematic for me to understand, is that it looks like the full 10tb won't be used for long time. If the system is locked at using (up to) the min size in all of the array, looks like the full 10tb won't be used. Looks like he's only using 4tb -- if smallest is 4tb of that 10tb. But, I haven't done raid-0 (other than striping on my main pc for speed). But, on my server, I'm not using raid and just a JBOD configuration. Anyway, love these videos, and this is best channel (all most) on YT. I really like what he always does at BMB ... I never miss a video ...

    • @PoeLemic
      @PoeLemic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, I rewatched first 2 minutes. I get what he is saying now. He has a max of 8tb drives, given that the parities (currently) are 8tb drives. So, I do see why he is exchanging for 10tb. But, seems like -- lot of the drive will be wasted until he upgraded all of the drives. Don't know -- I'd sell the small drives and invest in new biggers on credit. But, again, that's me.

  • @harrythehandyman

    Hey Jason, could you comment on Shingled Magnetic Record (SMR) used in a lot of consumer hard drive (like 2-6TB WD Red, most today's desktop drive, external drives) ? There are user report that some heavy load of write (especially random write) cause SMR drive slow to respond, as a result, the NAS software (FreeNAS, other ZFS, Synology) or RAID controller think the drive going bad and kick it out. Unraid maybe is more immune to this, but it could still happen on rebuilding array (when read/write are intensive). A lot of new USB external drives are now SMR, shucking drives maybe is less reliable compare to the "old days". Thanks!

      Hi Peter, I’m currently upgrading my parity like in this video. I’m 4 hours in but unRAID is showing estimated 24 hours total to rebuild parity - like Jason, running at about 100-150MB/s. I’m running dual Intel Xeon L5640 and unRAID is jumping between 8-15%. I have a few dockers running as well, but they are mostly dormant right now

    • @jaredwllms2
      @jaredwllms2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest bottle neck for a parity rebuild i believe is the slowest read or write speed (read from existing drives / write to the new drive - whatever is the slowest). Since the parity rebuild is mostly each bit of all your drives added together to calculate the parity, it’s not very CPU intensive to do 0+1+0+0+1+1=1
