Great review. Was a bit of surprise that this perfect game finally got a re-release. After having played the original since 1996, I immediatley went and bought a couple of basic gameboxes and one of each released datapack and after a couple of games, I can finally let the original rest since this version of the game is a blast to play and is a worthy release of prof. Richard Garfield's masterpiece (he always thought this game was his best)
Thanks for the review Ryan! Sorry we didn't meet at GenCon, but I'm marking that up to perhaps you were in a locked room learning how to play this one :) I pity the poor gamer who isn't technically minded trying to get into this. While I personally love it, I have a good feeling that the LOTR will continue to be their bread and butter with LCG. Still, looking forward to playing and I think you did a good job fitting a massive amount in ~16 minutes.
Johnny Mnemonic was actually originally a short story by William Gibson (in 1981) that served as the precursor to his novel Neuromancer, arguably the most influential cyberpunk work ever (It even invented/coined the term 'cyberspace' and inspired pretty much everything that came after, including Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, The Matrix). A lot of the concepts in this game (e.g. ICE) seem to either be from that novel/series or from works inspired by it.
Thanks! Actually I was all around during GenCon taking some of that fine footage you saw in the GenCon episodes! I didn't really learn many games while there...all of my experience with this one was 2 turns during GenCon and then my games after! Maybe we can meet up some other time in the future! Thanks for the kind words
While i appreciate the support, the personal attacks aren't really necessary! My reviews don't cater to everyone. Kroen just seems to prefer a different style.
Wow...I had no idea that this was re-printed and reimagined. I have a complete set of "classic" netrunner and all expansions. It was a beautiful game. This one takes me back...
Thx Ryan. I was at CoolStuff in Orlando yesterday when they got them in stock. I almost fell over myself to get a copy. I played the original and this is a real blast from the past dream come true in LCG format no less!
Great review!! Just bought the game (based on your christmas shopping guide) and was intimidated by the large rule book. Really helped clear things up and get me started!
Good review and info video for this amazing game. I love how all the runner and corp factions have a "feel" to them and how that changes how you play. I hope to see this game talk off and from what I've heard it doing great in sales.
Great job with the review! Just a couple of points that I thought could use clarifying: * Cards discarded from damage are discarded randomly, which is a very big deal in an LCG. * If the Runner player ever has to discard a card with no cards in hand, they lose the game (they're "flatlined" in Netrunner's terminology), which is obviously a big deal, and makes brain damage that much more dangerous. * You can't trash cards in the Archives, because you pay to trash cards *to* the Archives. :)
I really love your videos Ryan and I'm always excited when i view one of ur videos about a game i really like or want to try. Keep the great job Ryan :D.
Great video, great game! Never played the original but waited for months for this to be released. I love all the sci-fi references, such as 'Melange Mining Corp', 'Weyland' and all the other not-so-obvious ones. Very pretty cards too!
It really doesn't matter, but you are correct in the usage of asynchronous in this game as well, Ryan. While you meant asymmetrical, an asynchronous game is simply one where player turns are not simultaneous. Since the turn structure is back and forth in Netrunner, you are correct in calling the game that as well. This is what happens when I'm bored...
Mostly the same. There are some key differences, however: 1) Deckbuilding options is now broken into factions rather than wide open. 2) You are limited to at-most 3 copies of a card per deck, instead of this being wide open. 3) Traces work differently: The secret-simultaneous bid from the old game has been replaced with a system where the corp starts with some trace strength for free, and then has to openly announce their bid before the runner then counters. 4) Bad publicity works differently.
picked it up for about £30 from my local game store which is arounf $45-50 very much looking forward to playing the game and the review was pretty good and the play demonstration was succinct.
This is a heavy terminology game so I can see why the review might have been confusing. In the future, maybe Ryan could go into more detail on each. However, that increases the length of the video so maybe more general descriptions would work.
Well, i like cyberpunk and terminology wasn't hard, but i didn't see much exiting things in the overview. I liked the Infiltration game reviewed by Tom, which is in a similar theme. It looked more challenging and exiting from a review point.
Ryan, I enjoy your reviews and find them informational. Don't listen to the idiots/attackers -- I think you're tone will be more relaxed if you do. And I wonder why TH-cam doesn't have a voting method to hide/banish bad comments like other sites?
Because in big ice builds Corporate Troubleshooter is the most useful card and you only get 1 copy - I'd rather run 3. In fast advance SanSan is the key card and you only get 1 copy - better to have 2 or 3. I'd also like to have several decks built at once, and having 6+ copies of Sure Gamble/Hedge Fund helps with that.
Actually the Runner taking a turn to draw a card is an ADVANTAGE, because they have an extra free turn that they can use for something else, if they don't need to draw a card. Such as breaking ICE, getting money to pay for hardware, etc.
36 pages is not that bad, the game is a bit complexer than your average card game afterall. Besides, if you don't count the cover, index, component list, fluff, glossary, adds and quick play schematics, the rules themselves barely fill 18 pages.
Great Review Ryan. This game looks interesting but I'm kind of turned off by the LCG aspect. I didn't like Lord of the Rings LCG as I found the game out of the box very hard and not interesting enough to spend time optimizing decks. I realize I am not good at it and it is beatable out of the box. I also realize many people love the game; I just didn't get it. I think these games are best if you and a buddy get into them at the same time. I need a gamer buddy.

for anyone who doesn't know, FFG has restock of the game is out now, so the game is available from their site & other stores.

This was an extremely clear breakdown of how to play the game, thanks!

Thanks for the great review. Really looking forward to playing this game.
Yeah it is pretty well balanced out. I find I draw pretty often though :P
Fantastic Review, Ryan!

And the cyberpunk role-playing game (Cyberpunk by R. Talisorian) was influenced, if not directly based on, Gibson's Neuromancer

Thanks for your review. Gave me a good understanding of the mechanics of the game.

How can I to build my deck?
I really liked the ccg when it came out. The rules were simple to me then and i still have a good number of those old cards.
Why? You can't have more than 3 cards of a type in a deck, and there are only a few cards that you only get one or two of.
First designer game I ever bough was 'Android' and I loved it! So I am really looking forward to this game!

Just played this game tonight. It's awesome! Love it.
Can anyone tells me how this game plays, compared to the original?
looking forward to playing this, it's nice to see that the android universe continues to live.
Android didn't give the credit it deserved.

I just got 2 copies of the game to gave more options in deckbuilding

I believe Netrunner was originally based on a cyberpunk roleplaying game actually.
The Thumbnail is wrong. My guess is the thumbnail guy had just finished 7 Wonders and then made this Thumbnail.
I wish I could play 2 player games in our group. I am the only one that bothers to learn the rules well enough to teach anything.
Impressive how influential Neuromancer continues to be.

Seems confusing, but really interesting as well.
I want this game, but I'm going to wait for the rediculous ebay prices to come down.

thanks for the correction, my bad..
this game looks so cool. I have been looking for a good 2 player game for me and my fiance, and Dominion has been getting stale.
Asymmetrical not asynchronous.
It does. That's what the downvote is for. After it receives a certain number of thumbs down, the comment is hidden.
when i read about I need to use ice.... a got some from the refrigerator..... hehehe
You have something on your shirt.
Yeay for Cyberpunk
Holy shit dude, your dice is Gir. Why is your dice Gir? I DEMAND ANSWERS!!
Sorry it didn't do it for ya...its really one of those sit down and learn it games.
I got this game for my birthday....I still can´t understand all the rules.....
36 page rule-book? For a card game? Pass.
complexer??? Are you serious?
the fact that this is a Neuromancer ripoff doesn't deter me from wanting to play it
And it is Over.
Your explanation wasn't very good. I didn't understand anything. Hopefully Tom Vassel will take a crack at it as well.
