  • A Declaration:
    Welcome to the Gameological Dig, a channel devoted to playing games with obtuse and interesting stories. The aim of this channel is to treat these game worlds like an archeological site, meant to be unearthed and studied, so that we may better understand their plots, characters and themes.
    Episode Notes:
    Much shorter episode this time around. For a couple of reasons.
    1) There's not much information on the Void. And what info there is offers very little insight into the nature of the place.
    2) This segment was technically part of the last episode. I ended up chopping this piece off to shorten the length of the video, in a desperate attempt to make the editing/uploading process less of a strain on my Mac.
    Which brings me to the important part...
    The time has come: by the time you read this, my Patreon page will be up. I need help getting a new machine and ya'll can be just the game-changer I need. Literally, if each of my subscribers donate just a dollar I'll be able to afford a new computer, which means more content, at FASSSTTTERRRR rate (insert race car sound effect here). So if you can, donate and help me get this channel off the ground proper! Let's do this!!

    Game Notes:
    Dishonored is a 2012 stealth action-adventure video game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released worldwide in October 2012 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Set in the fictional, plague-ridden industrial city of Dunwall, Dishonored follows the story of Corvo Attano, bodyguard to the Empress of the Isles. He is framed for her murder and forced to become an assassin, seeking revenge on those who conspired against him. Corvo is aided in his quest by the Loyalists-a resistance group fighting to reclaim Dunwall, and the Outsider-a powerful being who imbues Corvo with magical abilities. Several noted actors including Susan Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Carrie Fisher, Michael Madsen, Lena Headey and Chloë Grace Moretz provided voice work for the game.
    The game is played from a first-person perspective and allows the player to undertake a series of assassination missions in a variety of ways, with an emphasis on player choice. Missions can be completed through stealth, combat, or a combination of both. Exploring each level opens new paths and alternatives for accomplishing mission goals, and it is possible to complete all missions, eliminating all of Corvo's targets, in a non-lethal manner. The story and missions are changed in response to the player's violent actions or lack thereof. Magical abilities and equipment are designed to be combined to create new and varied effects.

    What if the Void needs a host to prevent it from ending the universe? Like whoever the current outsider is task is to keep the void from getting out of control and I also think that a small group of occultist know this and when the void eventually overcomes an outsider they have to replace him by doing the ritual they did on the current Outsider. That's just a lot of speculation though.
    Edit: Seems like I was at least mostly correct. Although I haven't read it yet the synopsis for the latest book which takes place after the death of the outsider dlc states, "The story features Billie Lurk facing the consequences of the removal of the Outsider from the Void, as Hollows open everywhere throughout the Empire Of The Isles."

    I know this is really old but I'd like to say something. In dishonored 2 (I know this was made before the game released) in the crack in the slab mission, after you leave the manor, fall into the void,and you are caught by the outsider, he says ( I don't know the exact line but I know 99% of it) "here you are, on a crumbling island on the edge of the void." If the void has an edge, that would imply that it has an end, making it finite. This could explain why it will consume everything, the void itself wants to become infinite. Or if the world of dishonored was originally a part of the void, it might want to become whole once more.

    I've only recently found these videos, and I've played dishonored before and now I'm only just now playing through Daud's story, this game is a perfect balance of action and story. If you want a bloody action game it is that. If you want a stealth game there you go, and if you want an amazing story, you get it both ways. It's truly a piece of art and it is beyond underappreciated.

    Seriously man, you have earned my sub. I may just be another guy on the Internet, but I try to be critical of who I sub to. You really have earned, your videos have in my opinion, a very healthy mix between speculation and "fact". Your voice is very easy to listen to, it's calming and because of how your present information your voice seems very informative. You don't just look at books in the game, and even when you do you question the books legitimacy. Honestly, in comparison to channels that are centred around lore, and have many more subs than you, I still prefer your content. In my very honest opinion, the standard of your videos I've watched so far seems incredible, but of course there's always room for improvement. Sadly I don't have any tips for you, but I assume my praise is just as good.

    This comes far late, but in light of Deathloop - I think there are some interesting parallels to what The Void and The Anomaly mean to the world of Dishonored. Intentionally or just casually done, Arkane seems to imply that world of Deathloop (Blackreef Isle specifically) is the future of the Empire of The Isles. I find interesting that your video on the Void and some of what it implies (that it touches past, present, and future, especially) makes a great sense in light of what we learn of The Anomaly and its characteristics during that game. I'm not sure how interested you are in that game (Deathloop), but just for some of the lore, it adds further to what you have discussed in these videos.

      It's unfortunate, but they did it to themselves.
      For starters, Bethesda declined to give review copies to anyone before the game came out, and that's a huge red flag. Any time a company does that, it immediately (and rightfully so) makes gamers skeptical. And given the huge mess the PC version is, it seems likely that Bethesda knew about the issues and that's why they withheld review copies. Given that Steam ratings are currently sitting at "Mixed", most PC gamers are going to hold off on buying the game until the issues have been fixed. To make matters worse, the patch that was just released a couple of days ago barely fixes any of the issues, so that's going to hurt sales even more.
      The sad thing is, they could have avoided the problem altogether if they'd gone with a different engine. For some idiotic reason, Arkane decided to build the game in their "Void" engine, some cobbled-together monstrosity using both idTech 5 and 6, with around a 90% rewrite of the code. If they hadn't done that, the game would have likely been fine, since the first one was buttery smooth on PC. This is probably the first time a Bethesda-published game has actually been better on consoles.

    • @Jakemufcfan
      @Jakemufcfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's only in the UK and how we judge sales doesn't include digital as I'm aware, plus sales for dishonored 1 ridiculously exceeded expectations so there sales targets for this game would still have been conservative

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sequels usually don't sell as good as first titles. But as Sam Vimes says, they are to blame for most of this.
      My own reasons:
      1) Lack of overt promotion for the game beyond pre-rendered cutscenes. no review copies -> No raised awareness.
      2) Lack of proper PC optimization. This meant that word about its poor performance got around too quickly and damaged their sales.
      3) The timing. I personally hold that November is the worst possible month to release a game in. It's too late for Summer and Autumn and too early for Christmas. Granted this franchise is not aimed at children and has a high rating, but even so, a November release is just not good compared to, say, a July or even September release.
      4) The game was unfinished. Sure, the NG+ update and the second custom difficulty update in January sound brilliant on paper and seem to be in execution, but the fact is, the game clearly needed a few extra months of work before they would be truly complete. It was very clearly rushed to be released. It may have done much better had it been delayed to February 2017.
      5) Using Denuvo as an anti-piracy DRM. Many people, even those who buy it legitimately, detest overt DRM practices such as this. It's part of the reason (that, and that I run a potato) that I opted for the PS4 release (or rather requested it as a Christmas gift) rather than buy the PC port.

    The reference to the void being both the beginning and the end of the known world suggests a few things. Firstly, if everything is a spawn of the void, wouldn't it make more sense that the void is more of a location than a separate realm entirely? How would a world be able to come about from a disconnected realm, and how would it "return to it" if it were not existent in the same fashion with what it was a spawn of? It would explain why the outsider is able to appear in "our" world as a corporeal being when Corvo/Emily stumbles across shrines. He is merely untethered from time/space, and can move about each at will. We are provided a fraction of this with "blink" and other powers that shift our spacial/temporal being. What we see as the "void" whenever the outsider takes us to the place that is characterized by destroyed surroundings and events frozen in time is actually the end in which the void is trying to achieve. This is the collapse of everything. This is the void becoming whole. What we knew as the void from what the outsider had shown us is merely a point in time. The world itself is the void, but spread about and scattered, which would explain why people are able to manipulate reality. The void isn't sentient, but it's "hunger" is simply the nature of its reality. It is able to be manipulated, and so it will be by those able to achieve it. Those like the Outisder are the consciousness of the void because they are the one to timelessly observe all events. The void is all of being, at every point in time. Though, I could be horribly wrong since I haven't played Death of the Outsider, yet. I'm curious as to the true nature of the void.

    If The Void is the primordial chaotic emptiness from which all things are initially born, sustained - and at the end of all, consumed; then becoming one with The Void - the infinite nothingness - would be to cease to exist an enter a perpetual state of non-existence, would it not?
    If discorded souls wonder the endless expanse of vacuous space and are eventually consumed by The Void; then said souls seem to eventually join their concorded brethren in a state of non-existence, likely appeasing the reason for their discord.
    Or in other words, eventually, all souls - both the discorded and concorded - become nothingness by joining with The Void, and such an amalgamate of humanity is reflected to and demonstrated with The Void's representative, The Outsider.
    Likely the reason for The Outsider's insatiable curiosity is that he reflects those perished souls who became one with The Void. Humanity's unrelenting curiosity for knowledge about the unknown are reflected, amplified, and likely bastardized through The Outsider's existence (or is it non-existence?). The Outsider is a human mind, with an inhuman and otherworldly perception and understanding of humanity, the cosmos, and beyond.
    Truly, a fascinating creature and character.
    Anyway, a great video and series. Well done.

    • @Zayindjejfj
      @Zayindjejfj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is an interesting way of explaining it.
      Doto gave me this sense that The Outsider was a suffering god like entity who was trapped in his state of being. He never wanted to be sacrificed in the first place. And his endless curiosity is probably all he has to justify his basically meaningless existence.
      Once a human becomes a god (or something like it) there isn't really much one can do.
      I had this sense that he was trapped in an existential hell that he was guiding Billie to free him from in a very subtle manner.

    I think I found something interesting, the first time you enter the void in your dreams and the Outsider gives you his mark.
    Here you pass by the Empress lying dead, Emily being taken away by the Pendleton Brothers, and the Royal Spymaster throwing around some pieces on his map. Behind him there is a wall and in the bottom right corner there is a poster with Anton Sokolov's face on it. Next to that there is a poster saying missing. This could be referring to the future. Emily being taken away the present, and the Empress dead the past.
    it's not something significant but it means that in the Void, future, present and past are 'present' at the same time. Or can be. Sorry if this was already commonly known, I only just found out by replaying the game. Which this 3 part series made me do. So thank you for that :P

    Fascinating take on the Dishonored universe! Whether or not your ideas prove to be accurate, thank you for sharing them, as this has been a highly entertaining series.
    Perhaps you are right that the all-consuming void is actually just another dimension of a greater universe that will one day become one. Every soul will one day become an immeasurably small part of the combined dimensions, which explains why the outsider doesn't care how much pain and death exists in the physical world; it makes no difference to the void. When a soul is consumed, the void is really just taking back a part of itself, hence morality has no meaning to it or the outsider.

    A lot of hints, from throughout your playlist alone, seem to hint that the void is a galactic center, particularly, a supermassive black hole.
    Time being illusionary or relative, the void hungering and eating stars, it being a part of space it growing etc.
    The void is some sort of black hole.

I love dishonoreds lore so much, the only thing that is unstatisfying is that many things had to be searched outside the game. Dark souls is an example for the contrary.

    i'm really curious about the books in dishonored 2 hinting that the void might be a real place. i always thought of it as at the deepest points of the ocean. but that doesn't really work as well with it devouring the universe one day.. there also are those giant flying snakes on pandyssia who supposedly are connected to the outsider? everything we only have limited information about in this world is just incredibly interesting to speculate about...

  • @SOLACEISHERE
    @SOLACEISHERE 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    i like to think that souls reunite with the void and gives the illusion of an end as the ego or personality built up around the soul falls away leaving nothing but the essence of that person to disperse into the void becoming one with it giving the illusion of it fading into nothingness and discordant souls fail to reunite with the void as the ego perseveres after death due to the chaos their actions brought to the world almost acting as a binding agent to it/to that old life keeping them from being able to merge with the void at least for a time until eventually everything gets devoured

    Do you think the aby of the every man was right ? Perhaps the aby dose actually have the people’s best interest at heart trying to keep the regular man from being damned into eternal wandering through the void. We may not agree with the abys method and persecution of people for the smallest misdeed but perhaps they are right.

    • @Zayindjejfj
      @Zayindjejfj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. A lot of the chaos that is brought into the world is from the mark bearers. So the Abbey is trying to help keep the void and its influence from corrupting everyone.

  • @moff181

    I would argue that the discordant souls seen in the void are not there as such kind of punishment or reward, but rather due to some sort of physical process.
    The void does not care about humans, so why would it be rewarding or punishing them? It is apathetic to our existence. Furthermore, it can not be some form of moral judgement, as the void is amoral. As mentioned in your videos, the world of Dishonored seems to have Lovecraftian influences, which this reading would support.
    So what's happening? In my opinion, all souls ultimately end up becoming one with the void, as you suggest. The more peaceful souls can easily merge with the void again. However, the discordant souls can not merge properly with it again as they have caused vast, chaotic changes to the world. This chaos in the real world impacts the void, due to some form of link between the real world and the void. This means these souls can not immediately remerge with the void, as they have by proxy caused chaos to affect the void.
    Obviously, this is entirely speculation, but makes more sense to me and appears to be more inkeeping with the themes seen throughout Dishonored.
    P.s. love the videos man

      It's a misconception that she blinks away, if you watch the intro cutscenes when first playing her you can see she has some kind of portal that allows her to traverse time itself and all of the timelines

  • @alicaido6616

    Just a realisation of my own, which obviously could be entirely incorrect as it is speculation.
    What if the reason Delilah is actually capable of inhabiting the Void, is simply because the Void sees her as someone who could be an emissary?

  • @alicaido6616
    @alicaido6616 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay before I watch this whole video. I've seen it in many other videos and even through official trailers. That panning shot of a statue that seems to be reaching out to something with his left hand. I say "his" because the stature bloody reminds me of Corvo. Now I'm not gonna go too in detail about my theory, as I've not extensively read all info that we've been given through developers or even the original game and dlc, but I'm calling it:
    If you choose to play as Emily, Corvo will be trapped in the Void by Delilah.
    Now I'm open to discussion about this, so if you see this comment and feel like replying go ahead. Just remember, I want discussion, not to be insulted. I could be entirely incorrect, but I would still like to discuss this possibility.

    9:53 That all thing you are reffering here is heavy inspired from Buddhism. Escpecially from Samsara ( Neverendig cycle of life and death for mortals and gods alike (Our day to day life basically)) and Nirvana ( State of mind that allow you to be set free from samsara). Samsara is perceived as... jail because life is painfull and we all should seek way to be free of pain, and to be free of pain we need to get out of samsara. Being god or godlike creature is not good thing because gods are trapped in samsara as well and as we already know being traped in neverending cycle is bad. So reward for being good guy is Nirvana.
